Cobra Kai
Games that require you to play while holding the Lynx in a vertical orientation. -KLAX -Gauntlet: Third Encounter -Raiden I would have liked to seen this feature used more, and there's one game in particular that really needs it: APB As good as APB already is, the original arcade game is a narrow, vertical playfield. The only thing holding the Lynx version back is the very limited viewing area, because you drive up and down in this game, not left to right. But yeah, TATE mode, only on the Lynx. And the ability to flip the screen 180 degrees for lefties an righties. They still don't offer either of these features on modern handhelds.
Fadest
Some homebrew alo use Tate mode, like Glob Shoot and Vince Attack. The Wonderswan had the ability to use tate mode, but unfortunately, it was mostly a Japan only release.
PFG 9000
Ms. Pac Man should have been done in TATE mode. They could have used the original screen ratio, or something close to it, rather than smooshing the graphics like the released version. 2

Anyway, the new release Centipede also goes in rotate mode.

To be fair, the DS uses TATE mode for many of the system’s most notable games, and MANY Switch games support it too. It is a shame that the Game Gear and the Lynx weren’t used to their full capacity. They probably figured, possibly correctly, they were too big for kid hands to hold in that orientation.
Cobra Kai
Had a DS for a little while, don't remember TATE on any of the games I had. How would that even work with 2 screens?
+jgkspsx
Using the touchscreen and sometimes the D pad. Hotel Dusk, Last Window, Brain Training, 100 Classic Books, and a lot of games I’m forgetting used it.
SlidellMan
@jgkspsx, @Cobra Kai Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, Nanashi no Game, and Ninja Gaiden Dragon Sword are three more examples.

Rick Dangerous
I like the idea of it but the lynx is always awkward to hold vertically. Can never play Raiden for super long my arms hey all twisted up.

What a sight that would be...
SlidellMan
I know at least three games that would be perfect for the Lynx's TATE mode: Magical Drop, Puzzle Bobble/Bust-a-Move, and Puzzle de Pon.

Turbo Laser Lynx
I really like flappy bird that also is a vertical game. It's a bit more forgiving (figuratively speaking), since you don't use the D-pad. The graphics are fun and colourful, the music is funny and I just love that yellow cart! I think it really pulled me back into developing for the Lynx a few years ago. Karri's comment about the game always make me giggle when I come to think of it. On 12/31/2016 at 11:38 AM, karri said: This must be the most irritating game in history. - playing the game sideways - Chickendance - Flappy There's been some discussion in some other threads about how to do some vertically oriented classic arcade games on the small Lynx screen, like Donkey kong or Bomb Jack. Scrolling with bigger graphics or static (perhaps vertical) screen with smaller graphics. Probably quite subjective which one would feel better. +jeremiahjt
Okay, two things. First, what is tate mode? I know the Lynx has a vertical mode, but I have never heard of tate mode. Second, NFL Football also uses vertical mode.

A gaming tribute to Sharon Tate? Or, apparently, vertical orientation "that came into its own in the fifth generation of consoles". I knew the Lynx was miles ahead of its time! I say we add Lynx Invades Japan to the list.
SlidellMan
Tate is Japanese for Vertical, should have elaborated on that.

SlidellMan
@Fadest That prototype reminds me of Tetris Attack/Panel de Pon.
Fadest
Well, maybe there is a link Short story, @vince (godfather of all the french Lynx scene) is a big fan of Tetris Attack. Many years ago, I made a very limited clone that ended in Yastuna 1 -Alchemy of Cubes. Last year, we were looking for a neat idea for Lynx birthday, and we decided to offer him a unique game. So I took this old game, turned it into vertical mode, added special features, and lots of private jokes. @Zerosquare wrote new audio routines to cut music (wav/mp3) into small files and read it from the cart in streaming (well, won't work with every music, and is limited in size of course). We made a cart, box, a sticker, a manual, badge/pin's and put it in blister. So there is and will only be 1 version of this game (I did not even printed a box or flashed a game for myself), this is the most exclusive Atari Lynx game in the world I guess. There is probably a video somewhere. So this summer, I'm playing with the idea of removing all the private stuff (who really care about installing Fedora while playing on his Atari Lynx ?), changing the graph (right now, these are the one from Space Lock), the music of course, and probably a bit the gameplay. Then I may make a small run this fall (probably 60 units), or put it directly as Flash on Demand on Yastuna Games, I don't know yet. 3
