HSC18 Round 12: PHOBOS, CAVERNS OF MARS II, NIGHT RESCUE 1941

Aha, the manual is clear on this:

Novice caverns: A-F (6 caverns)

Pilot caverns: A-J (10 caverns)

Warrior caverns: A-N (14 caverns)

Commander caverns: A-P (16 caverns)

I find that the speed is identical on these levels, and so is the maze shape and the placement of all items which means the only was Commander is more difficult than Novice is that it takes many more stages to get to the end and get the level bonus. For that matter, I suppose we could all be playing the highest difficulty Commander as it would let the best players see the entire game.

(This oddly enough reminds me about M.U.L.E. where a beginner game only lasts 6 rounds and lacks quite a few gameplay elements where a tournament level game is 12 rounds with all features, but not really that much more difficult)

Good idea, good to know this details from the manual.

So, finally, are we going to play only in Commander?

Phobos (difficulty level Commander) - 19660 pts, reached stage K (out of maximum P)

Many of the stages are variations of each other, but definitely much more fun playing on this level than looping it round and round on the easier difficulty levels.

OK YES PHOBOS PLAY ON COMMANDER A-P. THANK YOU

We'll make NIGHT RESCUE A BONUS GAME, good spot deteacher

Phobos (difficulty Commander) - 22090 pts, reached stage L

I find that stages A-H are reasonably easy. Stage I is very difficult, stage J is the same as stage F plus TNT, stages K-L should be doable if you are fast to move your ship diagonally.

That's a lot of laps McKong

I can see how you can get on a roll with the extra man each time (climb on the cheese  )
COM II 88,100 on the 5th loop.

Phopbos 79,220 with 50,940 on the first level. Liking the L/R firing and slalom style early sectors, you can get everything shooted!!!

Yeah, it doesn't get any more difficult after the 4th run, and while it seems impossible to make it through the end part without running out of fuel, you get an extra life for finishing it

Phobos - 55480 pts

phobos-commander-55480.thumb.jpg.84dcd488fce82b17272b6cb3f5650242.jpg

I only scored some 30K on the first level/lap so amazing score by TRBB to obtain 50K in the same space. You must've shot nearly everything you could find!

Actually I was disappointed at the end. Stages K and L are challenging but doable. Stage M is a dumbed down version of stage I. Stage N is nothing dangerous at all? Stage O is pretty much the same as stage H and stage P is the same but with more bricks and the final boss to shoot. I had hoped for an increased difficulty level near the last stages, not that it would ebb out into being easier towards the end of the level. Thus if you survive stage I, K and L, and don't screw up, you can safely assume you'll clear the level.

Phobos:  21240  (level K I think?)

CoM II:  72400  (4th time through I think?)

NR 1941:  1500

Wasn't a huge fan of Nigh Rescue personally.  Caverns definitely felt like a bit of a grind but wow does fuel run out fast the further in you go!  I found myself delaying shooting the fuel to see if it helped.  I'm not sure it did ?

Phobos was a real treat.  I'm sure I've played it before but maybe I never got as far?  I got to the part where you have to descend on your own and at first I was like why isn't it still auto-descending?  ?

Of the three I will probably keep playing Phobos to see how I can improve.  Would love to get to the end.

Try this carlsson, it's fun, ok you can't shoot everything when it gets too busy but you can get most stuff if you keep track of the L/R firing, sometimes switch by double firing...

Yes Phobos is nice, intersting to compare to Cavern's of Mars.

COM II - I was delaying the fuel shots, had one completing where I was floating down on vapours as the level ended so it is possible but I was relying on the extra life most times, the rockets are still enough to keep you on your toes!

Yeah, I should try Caverns of Mars 1 as well, for comparison with Phobos. I know that we assigned the COMPUTE! version of Night Rescue as a bonus game, might as well try CoM 1 too.

We played COM before, it's a good game with the added element of escaping back the way you came but I was referring to the L/R shooting in the first stage (COM) part not being compromised re the escape forcing a simpler layout perhaps!! We can poll it at some point for another similar round. I picked Phobos as it is less known and a charming game, I picked up the original disk for it but didn't play it for ages as I thought it was identical to COM :)

I agree that fuel runs out quickly at this point!

Good score carlsson  delay the fuel shoots when you can and you'll soon be making McKong play again :-D

Phobos

21,620

CoM2

8,850 14,850

Night Rescue 1941

5,600 19,700 L2

PS Took me ages to work out the fine tuning on the fire button. Required to land on the Platform at the end.  I thought it was arrows keys only, as a true Keyboard Atari Warrior ;-)

Night Rescue 1941 - 22800 pts (reached a little bit into level 3)

I'm starting to like this one! There are no timers to worry about, everything is about precision, controlling your speed and position and not be cocky! If you can keep your cool, I'm sure one can get very far into this game. Press the fire button and move in order to fine tune the horizontal position. It is also crucial to reach the end of the stage (i.e. the red landing pad that looks like a cross between a snowman and a fighter pilot).

Had a quick play on Night Rescue - locked up when left on title screen before play and again after reboot when on title screen after go.

2300 willl play this again later. Can you reescue ALL the guys - that one wedged near the rocket near the start?

Nope, guys that are too close to buildings or too deep into a crevice will have to suffer. In principle you could flee past the level to the landing pad and clear the level, but obviously score far less than if you take your time to actually rescue those you can reach. Sometimes it can be a judgement whether it is worth risking a life to get some guys badly positioned since it doesn't seem to be a minimum required.

I didn't notice any lock ups though, but I haven't played the game again last week.
