What SD card do you use with SIDE 3 ?

Level42

Recommended Posts

I figured it would be useful for current and future owners of the wonderful SIDE3 cartridge to know which SD card to get to use it trouble free.

Here's my own results so far. If you can, please copy the format and fill out the details of your working (or not) SD card(s).

Brand:
Model:
Size (GB):

Type (SD, SDHC, SDXC, SDUC):
Speed (Standard, High-speed, UHS-I , UHS-II, UHS-III, Express):

Used adapter for Mini or Micro:

Used on what computer (400,800, 600XL, 800XL, 1200XL, 65XE, 130XE, 800XE, XEGS):

Any hardware mods (Antonia, U1MB, Sophia 1, Sophia 2, Stereo Pokey, Pokeymac, etc. etc.):
Original Atari or new (switching Power Supply):

74F08 installed ?

Does it work absolutely trouble free (Loading CAR, XEX, BIN, ATR (with U1MB), runs PDM music) ?:
If not, what issues ?:

Brand: Kingston
Model: Too tiny to read.
Size (GB): 8GB

Type (SD, SDHC, SDXC, SDUC): SDHC
Speed (Standard, High-speed, UHS-I , UHS-II, UHS-III, Express): C10, U1

Phyiscal size (Standard, Mini, Micro): Micro
Used adapter for Mini or Micro: Yes

Used on what computer (400,800, 600XL, 800XL, 1200XL, 65XE, 130XE, 800XE, XEGS): 600XL, 800XL, 1200XL

Any hardware mods (Antonia, U1MB, Sophia 1, Sophia 2, Stereo Pokey, Pokeymac, etc. etc.): 600XL: 64K Internal RAM, Rev. C BASIC.  800XL: 256K Internal RAM, UAV, Rev. C BASIC.  1200XL: UAV, +5V SIO mod.
Original Atari or new (switching Power Supply): Original on the 1200XL, ex-RasPi 5V/2.5A PSUs on the 600XL and 800XL.

74F08 installed ? Not yet, at least on the 1200XL.  Not planned for the 600XL and 800XL.

Does it work absolutely trouble free (Loading CAR, XEX, BIN, ATR (with U1MB), runs PDM music) ?: No U1MB in use on any machine so cannot speak as to .ATR images.  .CAR, .XEX, and .BIN work fine with the exceptions listed below.  Have not tried PDM yet.
If not, what issues ?: Specific to the 1200XL: it needs a 74F08.  Have them on order, should be here in a couple of days.

Edited by x=usr(1536)
There is no UAV in the 600XL. Yet.

Before I report results, I realize I've never even tried PDM music files. Is there a player to use, and some sample files to try so results can be reported consistently?

@DrVenkman SIDE3 has its own inbuilt PWM (assume that's what ya meant?) music player so just source a PWM file, copy it to the Sdcard and run it from the Side loader. Just tried to find a music file on AA but couldn't.

Both these cards work perfectly. PDM files play fine, SDX boots and runs fine with great speed, SIDE Loader runs fine with no issues:

This card did not work correctly. It was picked up by the SIDE3 loader and worked fine, but was not picked up by FDISK under SDX, having said that it's a very old card:

Brand: ScanDisk
Model: None.
Size (GB): 2GB

Type (SD, SDHC, SDXC, SDUC): SD
Speed (Standard, High-speed, UHS-I , UHS-II, UHS-III, Express): No idea

Honestly? If your SIDE3 is playing up on two separate machines using their own power supplies - I think you need to get in touch with the vendor you bought the device off, as at least one of the cards you bought should work.

It’s a bit hidden because of it’s not very descriptive title but here is a thread about an online tool you can use to convert music files to PDM and many have posted some tunes there which you can download and try.

SIDE3 has a built-in player (thanks to FJC), no extra software necessary, it recognises the files by its extension.

Trying to run these files is a good test for older/slower cards. The data is read rather “bluntly” (if I may say so) and “in real time”, so not like opening a CAR, BIN, ATR or XEX file.

This yields different results, slow, old SD cards can’t seem to keep up with providing the data, the result is a frozen screen and no or static noise.  More modern ones play the files fine.

Big thanks for everyone who took the time to provide their data, much appreciated….

Please test a PDM file. Without that you don’t know tips it’s working 100%

PDM files are music files you can run straight from the SIDE3 loader.

I have attached one here. Please download it, unzip and copy to your SD card.

Then put the SD card in SIDE3 and simply launch the file just like you would launch a game from the loader.

you should hear the music and see the waves on the screen if it works OK. If not, you’ll likely just get a bluescreen.

So I tested both these microSD cards tonight in my SIDE3. I tried several different PDM files - the last three posted tonight in the FujiConvert thread, plus two I made myself from WAV files using the recommended "flashjazzcat" preset, plus NTSC and Mono. Of the files I tested, only this one plays, and only from the SandDisk card, not the Samsung, despite them ostensibly being the same class of card.
