Would you consider the Sega Dreamcast 9 million a failure as they call it?

Despite failing commercially, the Dreamcast is well-loved by Sega fans, had plenty of well-received games, and can be emulated using high-level techniques. None of this is true for the Jaguar.

So how about a 1 million atari lynx mini or micro capable of playing other atari console games like 2600 5200 7800 jag games too?

Isn't the jaguar well regarded here by all you and other forums, and ebay collectors buying it for $400 to 800 avg now, with great games, having a mythology to others, was last console of company as it was, and could be emulated? Tempest2000 runs good on my emulator. Which games can't be emulated great? Jaguar dont have many 30fps to 60fps games anyway. Avp is 14, fightforlife 12, checkered flag 14, etc.

I saw this thread title & immediately thought “Oh no!”

Used Jag prices are high because of limited supply. They’re being bought by collectors who want multiple weird systems. A mini system won’t satisfy them.

You might as well make a mini console based on the Super A’Can or Casio PV-1000.

I would be interested in a Jaguar Mini and am surprised that current Atari has not invested in a Jaguar emulator.  Even the biggest game on the VCS if it breaks thru is going to sell 5k copies max so given the strategy of making money they should do stuff that is interesting to the old Atari community like promoting old Atari emulation on the VCS.  They should partner with Atari Age if they were smart - unfortunately, they are not.

Well they might know better. I assume the people buying the VCS are doing so out of pure nostalgia. If you know anything about anything, you know it's a bad deal compared to say, a prebuilt retro pi off eBay for actually playing old games. So the true enthusiasts probably aren't their target market. Then again, I know how terrible it is, and I still kind of want one, so who knows, maybe you're right.

It's no surprise here. Atari would have to hire someone to write an emulator that's a little more complex than ones for most other conventional consoles, all for a system that sold at the bottom of the barrel during its lifetime. The Jag was in no way "highly regarded" like a certain someone keeps saying, in fact it is widely mocked and at best serves as a mild curiosity for that reason alone. It would be great to see it done, but it's not the least bit surprising that it hasn't happened.

You'd also need someone at current-day Atari who even knows (much less cares) about the Jaguar.

At one point in the VCSBox saga, Atari did promise Jaguar games for it, but so far that hasn't materialized. Granted, they own practically nothing of the Jaguar library at this point, as most of the games were developed and owned by someone else. Per the latest list, the only Jag games they have the rights to are Missile Command 3D, Tempest 2000, and for some reason they list Space War 2000. The story is similar to Lynx titles.

Also, good luck licensing AvP anything now that Disney owns that license. The cost on that alone would make any kind of Jag mini project economically unfeasible. That's also likely why they aren't investing in a Jaguar emulator - recouping your cost on such a thing is unlikely to happen at this point.

Cool tempest2000 at least. Sega got 2 Disney license games on genesis mini. Doubt they paid 2 million for 2 games plus alot more from capcom Konami etc for a mini that would have sold ? a million copies.

1) Sega has a lot more money than Atari does right now.

2) The Genesis sold millions of units while the Jag sold something like 150k.

3) The only Atari system that sold enough to make modern business heads turn is the 2600, which is why it gets most of the love

Licensors look at those kinds of things when they consider who they'll license something to. They also consider things like reputation. The Jag has one of the worst reputations among produced consoles in history, which can mean it'll cost you more to license something out like AvP.

Doesn't matter how passionate we are about the Jag or the brand, the numbers don't show the idea of a mini console being anywhere near a success. If Atari is going to do anything with their Lynx/Jag IP, only makes sense to put it on the VCS, but even then it's not a free ride to do so.

Atari lynx and 5200 sold 1 million , 2600 sold 30 million, jag 150,000. But putting legacy games 2600 5200 7800 lynx jag jag cd on vcs might be best bet now.

Ok, but some sources say 1...was it 2 or 3? I'm shocked game gear sold 10.54 million thats more than dc or saturn. Anyway maybe a lynx mini but console version with other system games too or putting everything on vcs would be more interesting.

Shocked?

After bargain sales not really. Especially in areas gameboy was not as far ahead, at least for a bit.

It's why software dried up in the end and interest in Sega handheld had decline significantly.

Them following up with the Nomad didn't help things either. But that wasn't going anywhere even if it took 2AA batteries and had 10hr battery.

Also forgot to mention Sega with Game Gear had more money for production and better distribution access than the Atari with Lynx too.

Honestly, whatever 3 or so million it sold is pretty impressive given the circumstances.

Agree.

Madman well kind of, but with lynx games (didnt AT Games legally win Namco case for Ms Pacman?) , tempest2000 for jag, ninja golf for 7800, jag cd iron soldier 2 game, and some others, reduce console price to maybe $78 once software emu fully developed. But now it seems it does tempest2000 etc ok.
