HSC18 Round 13: PHOENIX LAIR & SPACE MINES

Phoenix Lair - 3620 pts (level 3, got mesmerized by all the eggs)

Space Mines! - 22000 pts (also developed a strategy in this one)

Space Mines! - 25300 pts level 13

 

I'll admit that this game is starting to grow on me! At first I thought it didn't seem that fun, but once you get to levels 9-10 and up, it is getting so fast and with so many flies attacking that it is a challenge to place mines and put yourself in safety. Sure it is not an exploration game where you have to develop new tactics all the time or you get to see new level designs, but for all intents and purposes it is quite playable once you have come past the first levels.

Don't know what happened there as I missed a load of posts, aage went a bit funny as my poll post lost all the links and text after I'd posted it, might be my end!

 

Space Mines 16,800 level 10. Very nice game Vincent :thumbsup:

 

Can't get Phoenix Lair to load - ATR has unknown sectors so disk copy doesn't work ? APE load didn't work also. Loaded in altirra ok. Anyone got a version that works on real hardware?

[edit] had a quick play on altirra using keyboard 1,490 looks another nice game. Atarimania ATR version loads ok by APE will try and diskcopy that one and report back later this week.

The version you linked to at Fandal works with my SIO2SD though once it bailed out with garbage at level 3, to the point that I though it was corrupted but it behaved on second reload. Given all the small bugs, perhaps it is worth scouting for alternative versions in case there is one that is a little more coherent, or if those bugs are original.

Phoenix Lair - 4560 pts

I realized that you don't need to pick up every egg on level 3, just the required 6 eggs and then return to your nest which means it is a trade-off how much timer bonus vs egg value there is to pick up, and how much you risk losing a life.

So after playing Phoenix Lair even more, I've come to some conclusions:

  • You clear the level after picking up at least 6 eggs and then moving back to your nest and exit to the right.
  • If you pick up all egs on the level, you get 1000 pts bonus.
  • The key that appears seems to generate some 400-500 pts bonus as well?
  • Speed 0 (default) is the fastest. Speed 10 is the slowest.

I suppose everyone have been playing on default speed 0, but the game gets a little bit easier if you play it on a slower speed. I won't post my best score since it was achieved with different settings, but slower speed makes level 2 a piece of cake and level 4 almost possible to solve.

 

Regarding bugs, once the bonus game ended for me after only three riders, but c'est la vie...

I've played Phoenix Lair ATR versions usng APE, managed to get all eggs (and the key) and pluck 5 riders a few times. Best score 4.300 (on defailt setting) game is very twitchy on PAL so maybe players should explore the speed settings and report back for next time when we play Joust we can have this as the bonus game :idea: After a couple of rounds I had the green screen with only 1 egg and not much else showing - is this a bug or some sort of night mode?

1 egg sounds like another bug indeed. Sometimes the phoenix gets stuck on an egg at the border and accumulates points until the graphics get corrupted and the game crashes with a screen of garbage.

 

Then again sometimes the steering in Space Mines also locks up so I have to reboot to keep playing.

Both decent enough games, in my opinion. Never played either until now.

I think the key to killing the riders in the bonus round stage of Phoenix Lair is to be sure to only touch the pink "rider" part of the sprite, not the brown "steed" part. It's tricky though, because you can knock off the rider while the steed is still dangerous for a few frames, so if you don't fly upward right away, you'll still die.

 

Space Mines is my favorite of the two: I like twitch style games like this.
