Defender does, the bottom buttons are for firing, the top ones are for your smart bombs, while any key on the keypad activates your hyperspace

Meteorites also does, the bottom buttons are for firing, while the top pair activates hyperspace

hmm there are 5 games that "need" analog control ,superbreakout, kaboom, starwars, gorf, missile command

games that need 2 buttons hmm i havent gone through them lately but the ones that come to mind are qix fast /slow walls and pole position gas brake (although the brake is very mild a downshift is a better brake)

When it comes to my games:

  • Ratcatcher
    • Uses both fire buttons
    • Keypad is used on the title menu
  • RealSports Curling
    • Keypad is used for menus and game play
    • Analog control required
  • Magical Fairy Force
    • Uses both fire buttons
    • Keypad is used on the title menu
    • Analog control required
  • Intellidiscs
    • Uses both fire buttons if you select that control mode
    • Keypad is used on the title menu
    • Keypad is used in game play if you select that control mode
    • Analog control used for 16-directional movement, but the game plays fine without it

  • 2 weeks later...

"Gremlins" has the second button used to flash a light, which in turn gets all the little fritters to stand still momentarily.

It's also a game that's better suited for the analog joystick - any that requires diagonal movement definitely will... have to figure out how to safely remove the potentiometers in there to clean them. I saw a video on how to fix the 5200's own pot (lower right) that also calibrates the controller responses, but to loosen up the joystick's pots couldn't hurt either.

Interesting -- we're currently working on setting default virtual controllers for each 5200 game for Argon... Current choices are 4-way digital (works great with the new 5200 game Overflow as an example), 8-way digital (default), and analog. We may want to try 16-way digital for yours (like we do for Intellivision) vs Analog.

In general, we're finding that unless a game requires analog, it is far more playable with 8-way digital. And games (Pac-Mac style) that were meant for 4-way, are that much better when we restrict the control to 4-way.

Of note, another modern game that can only play with Analog is the excellent Castle Crisis...
