electricmastro
I previously made a thread about old game franchises that still release new games and now here’s the reverse of that. Some examples I found include: Thunder Force: Thunder Force (1983) - Thunder Force VI (2008) Excite: Excitebike (1984) - Excitebike: World Rally (2009) Punch-Out!!: Punch-Out!! (1984) - Doc Louis's Punch-Out!! (2009) Adventures of Lolo: Eggerland Mystery (1985) - Revival! Eggerland (2000) Gradius: Gradius (1985) - Gradius ARC (2010) Rolling Thunder: Rolling Thunder (1986) - Rolling Thunder 3 (1993) Rygar: Rygar (1986) - Rygar: The Battle of Argus (2008) Adventure Island: Adventure Island (1986) - Adventure Island: The Beginning (2009) OutRun: OutRun (1986) - OutRun Online Arcade (2009) After Burner: After Burner (1987) - After Burner: Black Falcon (2007) Shinobi: Shinobi (1987) - Shinobi (2011) Splatterhouse: Splatterhouse (1988) - Splatterhouse (2010) Bonk: Bonk's Adventure (1989) - Bonk's Return (2006) Final Fight: Final Fight (1989) - Final Fight: Streetwise (2006) Golden Axe: Golden Axe (1989) - Golden Axe: Beast Rider (2008) F-Zero: F-Zero (1990) - F-Zero Climax (2004) Pilotwings: Pilotwings (1990) - Pilotwings Resort (2011) Oasis: Defenders of Oasis (1992) - The Legend of Oasis (1996) Wave Race: Wave Race (1992) - Wave Race: Blue Storm (2001) Lunar: Lunar: The Silver Star (1992) - Lunar: Dragon Song (2005) Top Gear: Top Gear (1992) - Top Gear: Downforce (2008) Lufia: Lufia & the Fortress of Doom (1993) - Lufia: Curse of the Sinistrals (2010)
Steven Pendleton
I know I was the one who mentioned it in the other topic, but every time I see Thunder Force's 1983 release date it makes me feel really weird to know that Thunder Force is as old as it is. Anyway, Fatal Fury (insert incredible sadness).

In the days of the Sharp X1, it was relatively quieter too:

Then Thunder Force VI's music is so quiet and forgettable that you can barely hear it and you won't remember it if you do.
Tanooki
Star Control would be one, then Origins etc came out once all that legal BS got fairly sorted.
Reaperman
Nintendo released a handheld game system, which boasted a native stereoscopic 3d display, and then opted not to bring their 3d tech-demo of a game series, F-zero to it--heck they didn't even bring us that last 2004 gba title. But given what they did with mario golf, pokemon and metroid lately--who cares if f-zero doesn't get a bad game too? 1

Well, I suppose there's always the Wipeout games people can look forward to now, as well the FAST series which has helped fill in the F-Zero void for Nintendo fans. +jeremiahjt
I remember Final Fight: Streetwise, Golden Axe: Beast Rider, and Splatterhouse all coming out and thinking to myself I would like to try those out. Now 15, 13, and 11 years later I have still never tried any of them. Some of those mid to late 2000's games I have no recollection of in large part because I think a lot of them were Wii games, but I am surprised I do not know Bonk's Return as I have been a TurboGrafx-16 follower for quite a while.

Well Bonk's Return was a mobile game, which many retro enthusiasts tend not to have interest in. Haha. Steven Pendleton
I forgot about Capcom's 1940 series or whatever it's called. I think it's been a while since they made a new one of those.

There was 1942: First Strike on iOS in 2010, though before that there was 1942: Joint Strike on 360 and PS3 in 2008, and it seemed pretty-well received:
+jgkspsx
There was this trailer in 2019: Which was, like, not exactly my thing, but at least it wasn’t nothing? But then gameplay footage emerged… Yuck. Blech. Gah. And then it was cancelled. Oh well. BTW, Defenders of Oasis is not part of the Story of Thor/Beyond Oasis series, but it is a must-play short RPG with tons of great ideas and no filler! Tanooki
It was canned because it was so awful it set off anyone both who had taste, and more so anyone who had any familiarity with the original that it got killed before it could infect the world with its awfulness from anything I've seen about it. The last sorta legit Commander Keen was a GBC only cart from 2000-2001~.
Leeroy ST
Bubs- damn it. Actually it's 2021, so I guess Fight Night qualifies now. Man, those were the only real fighting/boxing simulators out there. So much could have been done. EA could even turn it into a casino like Madden if brought back, $39.99 per boxer virtual trading card, $50 to change glove colors, play slots to win a headband. Earn EA nft coins in roulette to spend on tattoos. Edited September 6, 2021 by Leeroy ST

Yep, Bubsy getting re-releases in 2015 and new games following that, I suspect due in part to games like Shovel Knight and Super Mario Maker bringing a revived interest in retro 2D games:

I guess 5 did ok to, so we got paws on fire too.
Tanooki
Has the '...of Illusion' franchise, largely sega stuff, been mentioned? Castle was the first first to Genesis, then SMS...many SMS games then into the 90s, then 15-20 years later Castle was redone for PC etc in 2013.

It plays comparably well to Keen Dreams, which is not a compliment. If anything it’s even worse because that at least got the Keen IV jump physics right. Keen Dreams must be public domain since it keeps getting one man budget rereleases on Switch. I don’t count those as legitimate releases and anyhow they’re not new. HoshiChiri
Oh God, I'm as old as Thunder Force? Just give me a cane so I can shake it at the kids on my lawn... I'm inclined to bring up Klonoa, which hasn't had any action since 2008- but it's kind of an odd one, I don't feel like it ever really took off enough for the pause to be odd. I feel more like the number of games for such an obscure series is what's odd! Someone at Namco must've really liked him... And while Lunar is one of my favorites, we all know if another one comes out it's just gonna be a new take on Sliver Star again!
