Can anyone identify this "cartridge"?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, new Atari ST owner here. I recently obtained a full set of Atari 520 ST (computer + SM124 monitor + SF314 floppy drive) in very good condition. The seller also included an unknown cartridge in the sale. It has an attached power supply and an RCA socket. See photos below:

The power supply should output 12V DC and my multimeter measured about 14V so I guess that's okay. I tried hooking up this thing to the 520ST and plug in the composite cable from my TV but it did not work. I also tried connecting it to the RF port of the TV and it didn't work either. I then cracked it open and took some pictures. I hope someone can help identify this "thing".

btw, how do I know if the computer has ram expansion? I ran a program called "Home Accounts2" and this is what it showed - does the "Free Memory" mean anything?

With regards to the memory, I would guess you have 1MB as the free memory is more than the stock 512KB memory.

Also nice that the seller of the one linked by @bluemonday has a link to the software :)

There's some DOC's on the disk on how to use it

Thanks everyone for your input. I just confirmed that the "cartridge" is a ComputerEyes/ST video digitizer. I was able to capture the image from my apple iigs - it looked a little burry but it worked! It's also good to know my memory is more than 512K 🙂

Yes, like several have said, your machine is most likely a 1MB unit. The best way to tell that, and other useful information about your machine is to use this utility.

Thanks for sharing! I just ran the program and it truly has 1MB RAM. One more question - because currently I have a monochrome monitor, I cannot run many color games. If I make a cable for VGA/Composite monitors that connects to the 13 pin DIN connector, would it be able to know that I plug in a color monitor?

If you make or buy a ST to VGA cable, and assuming you have a 15KHz compatible monitor, you could use the two color modes. There are various different ways to use the ST with modern monitors, all with varying levels of success and image quality and ranging from fairly inexpensive to fairly expensive.

Thanks for the info. I’ll definitely look into it.
