In the Commodore world, if you have disk drives in the chain connected that are not turned on, you are supposed to unplug the serial connection. Is this the same with an Atari 8-bit as well? Recently had two unpowered Indus drives here in the chain and an SIO2PC-USB at the end of the chain. Worked at some point then got errors later on. Unsure why. There used to be a fairly common problem with some SIO2PC devices at the end of a chain. But AFAIK, this was only with the serial version and only with one IC -- the original 1489 (not Max 232 nor 14C89). I had this issue myself. The SIO2PC-USB is one I got in about 2015 from Lotharek. It has one IC that has "FTDI 1533-C 4905901 FT232RQ" The FT might be ET but I think it's FT.
