twh/f2 #1 Posted August 23, 2003 Howdy *.*! I am new to the ST and I have a MEGA ST2 computer. I noticed, that the TOS 1.02 ( Blitter TOS ) is rather lame for an operating os. Even my beloved atari xe can do more without the "fancy green" desktop and the mouse. Ok it's enough to check the directory or double-click a game. But that you call an disk operating system?? fuck GEM!! I want to install a sparta-dos like command line driven dos. Is this possible? I even heard from unix-like operating systems, is it working with my mega st (not STE!!). thomsen
[ProToS] #2 Posted August 23, 2003 hi, 1- use a simple Cli as a frontend for the gem was the more simple http://www.umich.edu/~archive/atari/Cli/ or 2- use mint/multitos on a *nix like conf for use a shell like bash or tsch old http://www.umich.edu/~archive/atari/Mint/ new http://sparemint.atariforge.net
Goochman #3 Posted August 24, 2003 Ok, I ahve a MegaST2 also and dont know very much about MINT or anything else. Does MINT provide the framework to run Unix on my Mega2ST? The SpareMint site was a little light on details to get a quick overview on whats required to setup and install this baby

You should as well exchange your eproms with TOS 1.02 against those with TOS 1.04 to enhance performance. Disk access will be MUCH faster with 1.04. fuck GEM!! I'd better not. There are some DOS-shells for the atari. One is with Adimens, one with Ease I think. I prefer using Tos, an old version of Mint or MagiC. In b/w with a sm124 an atari still is a good machine to use with cubase for midi or qed for text editing. You even can use an st for e-mailing. For browsing I would take another machine; at least a MegaSte (with graphics card), better a TT or accelerated Falcon. shell.zip
