masteries
Via heavy modifications, a real 3 button gamepad is supported via the standard joystick port (port 0 - mouse port) in any ST and STE machine. The third button is obtained via a combination of UP+DOWN at same time, As an example, a video, Metal Slug for Atari STE being played with a 3 button gamepad: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=atHTzwcx4Og FYI: This gamepad support 4 different buttons for Amiga computers, as well it is compatible with ZX Spectrum and Commodore 64 as well. Also, this can be used with all classic games too. As a multi-purpose retro platform gamepad. The gamepad is compatible with Atari ST/E, Amiga, ZX Spectrum and Commodore 64 at once Atari ST Button layout is: PAD - Directions A - Fire 0 B - Fire 1 C - Third button (UP+DOWN ; classic games detect it as UP or DOWN) X - remapped as UP (In order to have a jump button for classic games) Y - Fire 0 Z - remapped as DOWN Amiga Button layout is: PAD - Directions A - Fire 0 B - Fire 1 C - Third button (UP+DOWN ; classic games detect it as UP or DOWN) X - remapped as UP (In order to have a jump button for classic games) Y - Fire 0 Z - remapped as DOWN Start - Fire 2 ZX Spectrum Button layout: PAD - Directions A - Fire 0 C - Third button (UP+DOWN ; classic games detect it as UP or DOWN) X - remapped as UP (In order to have a jump button for classic games) Y - Fire 0 Z - remapped as DOWN C64 Button layout: PAD - Directions A - Fire 0 C - Third button (UP+DOWN ; classic games detect it as UP or DOWN) X - remapped as UP (In order to have a jump button for classic games) Y - Fire 0 Z - remapped as DOWN ----------------------------------------------------------------------- As well custom gamepads can be prepared under user request, there no additional charges; due to the amount of work is the same: For clarification I create these gamepad layout images: Now, its easier to select a layout, or modify one of these, As well, I think you are interested in the original Atari ST/E 3 button layout, Amiga 500 4 button layout and ZX Spectrum and other 1 button Obviously, for the special A500 & C64 layout, its not recommeded to press upper and lower buttons at same time (a resistance would need to be added); button 2 & 3 for C64 will produce not results for A500 or other machines. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Acquisition cost is 6€ per unit; modification takes 35 minutes, and testing/fixing takes another 5 - 10 minutes labour cost is 20€ (you are paying 20€ for aprox. 40 - 50 minutes of hand work, the real hard to implement is the combined button; this requires the creation of two independent paths). A total of 26€ Tracked shipment cost 7€ for Spain, 10€ for the rest of Europe, 11€ for America - Australia - Asia, and 12€ for Japan, Rusia, Alaska Edited November 30, 2021 by masteries

+Steve Jones
would these work on an Atari 800XL? I know C64 can use Atari joysticks but not sure if it works both ways.

I know C64 can use Atari joysticks but not sure if it works both ways. According to http://wiki.icomp.de/wiki/DE-9_Joystick Atari 8 bit computers (400 / 800 / 600XL / 800XL / 65XE / 130XE) shares the same layout as Amiga 500 and ZX Spectrum, it appears that 3 buttons are readable for these computers. This modified 3 button gamepad appears to be compatible with Atari 8 bits computers too, the fourth button, the trickier one use as button 3 for Atari ST/E is readable, but not needed for these systems. C64 button 2 and button 3 require inverse polarity, these buttons switch with VCC instead GND
