Why $700 for the 3DO? What were they thinking?

When you look at it from the perspective from the manufacturers, those savings added up overtime, and 3DO likely knew this when they worked with them on producing the hardware to keep them interested in their business model. On the bright side, a game Starfighter while not having the best performance it could have had, looked much better than the original Acorn release, and the Saturn and PS1 releases for reasons I am not really sure of.

Tim Parry and Andrew Hutchings had no involvement in the development of PlayStation and Saturn versions, which might have been a key factor.

Interesting.

It may be because the 3DO uses an ARM CPU they already knew on the Archie, contrary to the main CPU used in the PS1 and Saturn.
