Progear no Arashi (2001)
Progear Storm Of Progia (2001)

Those are the same game but with a weird romanization for Progear.

What's up with Metal Slug 3? Shouldn't that be in the other tracker as Neo Geo AES/MVS?

I didn't know there is a Rabbids arcade game... those things are strange.

Thanks for the corrections.

Metal Slug 3 was tracked in 2019 and 2021, both times by @digdugnate. Usually in the classic tracker when I see arcade games that clearly are Neo Geo AES/MVS titles, I relocate them as such but these entries went past me. It gets even more confusing as e.g. Wikipedia refers to the MVS as "arcade" which of course it is, but we have a special category for that. I haven't studied the hardware, how much of upgrade chips are inside the super expensive cartridges and how much utilizes the base hardware so perhaps for fairness there should be a Neo Geo AES/MVS pre-2000 and a Neo Geo AES/MVS post-2000, depending for how long new games and hardware improvements have been released.

Rabbids Hollywood was also tracked in 2019 by @wongojack which I remember I looked up later to put a year marker on it.

My ambitions for the week were not quite met, but I've made progress in the long-postponed Great Ace Attorney Chronicles, so it's not all bad.

Most of my time was on the modern gaming side this week again:

Apple iOS:

Haven't wanted to spend much time on my phone lately.

Duolingo - 56 minutes

Pikmin Bloom - 42 minutes

Pinball Dreams - 6 minutes

Nintendo Switch:

The Aquatic Adventure of the Last Human - 150 minutes

I got stuck on the first boss the first time I played this two years ago, but it has been on my mind so I revisited it.

93810CE1-C1A3-42DF-9922-371E40CD3FDC.thumb.jpeg.d1acde2cf13492865ae8dc0a3178a8e4.jpeg

The first boss went down easy but I keep dying on the second boss. If I had one more health tank or faster repair time or the ability to shoot overhead I could do it, I've been on the verge twice, but I keep messing up or getting unlucky. The difficulty of this boss seems too high since they can kill you with one hit from off-screen if you are in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Gravitar Recharged - 45 minutes

Worked on improving some high scores.

The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles - 200 minutes

Finished the first case, well into the second. (The first case is legitimately 4 hours long based on a YT longplay. Yikes.) The second feels snappier, but the same old tropes are in play. Herlock Sholmes makes for an amusing new mechanic and the writing is more interesting. I just wish it weren't so chatty.

Ittle Dew 2+ - 20 minutes

Some Zelda-lite fun as a change of pace.

Toki - 25 minutes

A faithful-seeming remake of the arcade game with high-definition animation. I'm not sure it's what the world was waiting for, and given the thudding reception it seems to not have been, but it's not bad and if you like the arcade game it's worth playing to see the pretty (and sometimes disgusting) art.

Nokia Symbian:

Atari Retro - 35 minutes

Played on the N-Gage, but this is a Symbian game, not native N-Gage. It consists of literally postage-stamp sized emulations or ports of Atari 2600 games. And here I thought the native N-Gage Atari Masterpieces was hard to see!

I played Missile Command and Yars Revenge. They're not bad ports but the tiny display and all of the crap you can't get rid of on the screen makes this impossible to recommend to anybody but collectors. (This card also includes Windows Mobile and Palm OS versions of the same games; maybe those are better, but I don't have a compatible device.)

PC:

I never log this so I forgot to log what I played last week! I got a copy of the Super Rare Mixtape Vol 1 and played several games from that.

Echoes+ - 25 minutes

A slightly too trippy twin-stick shooter, a bit hard to control on a keyboard.

A Mini Falafel Adventure - 65 minutes

A fun little Metroidvania starring a falafel. I think I got halfway through but got stuck on the shmup boss.

Plug & Play:

Jakks Pacific TV Games - Classic Arcade Pinball - 65 minutes

Most plug and play games are kind of questionable emulation or port collections, but this is a wholly original pinball game with good physics and three interesting tables. For the $10 it sells for, you can't go wrong, other than the horrible video quality.

8. Great Ace Attorney Chronicles, The (Switch) - 200 min.
9. Fairy Fencer F Advent Dark Force (PC) - 198 min.
10. Aquatic Adventure of the Last Human, The (Switch) - 150 min.

Top systems

1. Switch - 3696 min. (#1) = 73.5%
2. PC - 858 min. (#2)
3. PS4 - 252 min. (#5)
4. iOS - 104 min. (#4)
5. Plug & Play - 65 min.
6. Nokia Symbian - 35 min.
7. Arcade - 20 min.

Total 5030 minutes and 38 different games on 7 different systems, with 4 participants.

Welcome to the "Which Nintendo Switch games have you played this week" tracker! As the participation goes down slightly, 8/10 games on the individual list are on the Switch with Borderlands and Capcom Fighting Collection at the top. The systems list sees two new entries, as we didn't have a generic plug & play category before (only dedicated handhelds) plus that a Symbian games was dug out.

No changes to the 50, 150, 300 Hour clubs. Actually again no games with 5000+ minutes were played this week.

If anyone was late to post, I'll include your times for next week. Also, I'll post some mid-season stats later this week.

Here are the mid-season stats for the modern tracker. In the first half of 2022, we have played:

  • 220,836 minutes (2021: 227,861 min, 2020: 227,403 min; 2019: 159,690 min)
  • 470 games (2021: 347 games, 2020: 235 games; 2019: 184 games)
  • 36 different systems (2021: 24 systems, 2020: 19 systems; 2019: 22 systems)

The 2021 numbers are here.

While the total number of minutes is lower than the two previous years (including 2020 where the classic tracker saw a big dip, but not the modern one), the number of games and systems are higher than ever. Many people would have difficulty to even name 20 different gaming systems made in the last 20 years, but we bring out almost 40 of them!

11 of the top 100 from last year are still on the list. PUBG might no longer top the lists but still hangs on in the top. However since our premier PUBG player is having some time off the tracker, eventually it will drop in the ranking. A comparison of minutes per position:

#1: 8631 min in 2022, 24973 min in 2021

#10: 4020 min in 2022, 4648 min in 2021

#50: 1320 min in 2022, 974 min in 2021

#100: 480 min in 2022, 309 min in 2021

Systems wise, 21 of the 24 systems from last year have been logged in 2022. The top two, Switch and PC are unchanged. Of the systems in top 10, only the Oculus Quest is missing since we no longer have any participant to report it. Instead we have a bunch of new entries, headed by the Nokia N-Gage in 14th place.

At 24/36 systems, I think I am probably the most peregrinating tracker around here. Or maybe peripatetic. Or maybe just easily distracted.

I'm excited to report that the Evercade is getting its first native cartridge-based game before the end of the year: Cathedral, which has been out for a while on PC, Switch, etc. will be part of a 2 pack with NES extravaganza Alwa's Awakening. Maybe within the next year it may have 10 native games and be eligible for more full participation.

Snow Bros. Special - 40

This week I played a lot thanks to having to stay home and recover from COVID (even more in the classic section):

Diablo II Resurrected for PC - 193 minutes

Sonic Origins for Switch - 594 minutes

Sonic World (R9 rev 2) for PC - 88 minutes

progress:

Diablo II R - just rescued Deckard Cain

Sonic Origins - completed Story Mode (all four games) with all emeralds/time stones, then Sonic the Hedgehog (1)'s Anniversary, Classic, Boss Rush and Mirror Modes as Sonic with all 6 emeralds each where applicable. I've unlocked quite a bit of museum items.

Sonic World R9 - completed all the Sonic Adventure 2 stages as Knuckles.

It was an unusual week.

Apple iOS:

Haven't wanted to spend much time on my phone lately.

Duolingo - 62 minutes

Pikmin Bloom - 17 minutes

Discord:

GameQuiz Bot - 45 minutes

This is a guess-the-game-from-the-image bot that is pretty fun. It sources its images from https://vgdb.io/ which means that it's biased towards the games that site's users are interested in. But there are enough games I like to keep me going.

Nintendo Switch:

The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles - 240 minutes

Oh my goodness will they quit talking? The investigation parts were really fun but the amount of dialogue that serves no purpose except to pad the obscene playtime is... really an issue.

VMLabs Nuon:

Ballistic - 38 minutes

of which most is captured here except for a half-hearted last game.

For the first time in as long as I can remember, I have no time to report on either the classic or modern trackers this week.  I just wrapped up a long vacation to the UK, and I was just too busy to fit video games into the daily routine.

More to come of course . . .

I'm considering if this is an own "format" or just as well could go as Browser Based, but since we had two Twitch entries from before, I suppose Discord may qualify as its own format too.

The Nintendo Switch dominance continues, with Borderlands ahead of Sonic Origins and another 6 games on the top 10 list. It manifests itself on the systems list too, where the top four from last week are accompanied by two other systems. No changes to the 50, 150, 200 Hour clubs, though this week at least one game (Littlewood) with more than 5000 minutes has been tracked.

For what it’s worth I only use it in native clients, not in the web version. I would argue that whatever server the bot is running on is not a browser, anyhow.

I got distracted by my continuing Sonic anniversary marathon on the Dreamcast and didn't play Fairy Fencer F. Same stuff as usual is here again, along with the return of G-Darius HD and new entry KAMUI, which is an incredible RayForce + Soukyuugurentai type of thing with beautiful sprite scaling and a lot of bendy lasers.

PC

G-Darius HD - 13
KAMUI - 63

Switch
Hishouzame - 4
Sennou Game Teki-Paki - 7

PS4
Fire Shark - 20
Hishouzame - 54
Kyuukyoku Tiger - 17
Same! Same! Same! - 4
Same! Same! Same! (2P ver) - 21

Android (phone)

Stranger Things: 1984 123

PC

Dicey Dungeons 116

Luftrausers 35

Tharsis 125

PS3

Demon's Souls 120

Wii

Super Mario Galaxy 2 61

X360

Blood Stone 007 201

XOne

Pac-Man Museum+ 10

Back from vacation and trying to get back into some of the games I was playing before with a few others thrown in.  ALSO - Watching S4 of Stranger Things prompted me to do something I almost never do and that is play a game on my phone.  Stranger Things: 1984.  It proved to be a nice time waster while I was listening to an audiobook, but I doubt I'll go back to it unless circumstances are exactly right.

Another somewhat sparse week for me.

Apple iOS:

Haven't wanted to spend much time on my phone lately.

Duolingo - 88 minutes

They added in friend challenges. My friend keeps completely dunking on me.

Pikmin Bloom - 141 minutes

Community Day, yay. They keep adding stuff but I'm not sure it's making it more rewarding to play. They gave the loading screen a facelift that is decidedly Pokemon-esque but didn't improve the load time any. If my friends stop playing it I probably will too.

Discord:

GameQuiz Bot - 35 minutes

Usually I only answer the ones I know but sometimes I get fixated on figuring one out...

Nintendo Game Boy Advance:

Gradius Galaxies - 25 minutes

A really great sequel from a completely unrelated team from the Konami veterans.

Nintendo DS:

LostMagic - 20 minutes

Loaded up an old save, promptly got toasted by what I think was supposed to be an easy level. Oh well. I don't remember how to draw the glyphs right.

Nintendo Switch:

Dex - 75 minutes

This cyberpunk side scroller is very interesting but a little too anxiety-provoking for me.

Freedom Planet - 35 minutes

A really great homage to Sonic, particularly Sonic CD. I don't know why people don't talk about it more.

Hyper Light Drifter - 35 minutes

I was skeptical of whether I would like this but I finally gave it a try. I do like it. The aesthetics are as expected really great, but the combat isn't as much of a slog so far as I feared.

Pawarumi - 45 minutes

Very pretty and interesting shmup that I don't understand yet. There's a trick to weapon to enemy matching I haven't figured out.

Space Moth: Lunar Edition - 30 minutes

Bullet hell. Nice aesthetics.

Star Hunter DX - 20 minutes

Much easier... on easy mode.

Sturmwind EX - 65 minutes

I can't believe this Duranik classic came out physically on Switch and nobody told me. Great to revisit it.

PC:

More games from the Super Rare Mixtape.

Daughter of Reyn - 90 minutes

This rhythm-based Metroidvania ran at half speed on my poor old computer despite looking like a Game Gear game. It's fun but has a few too many rough edges to recommend. It's very close to being something great.

Emily Is Away - 90 minutes

Played through this AIM-sim adventure several times. It was a little boring after a while since different responses produced such minor changes in the outcome... but maybe that's the point.

Enviro-Bear 2000 - 35 minutes

This hilarious bear driving and eating simulator, which only lets you interact using the mouse pointer, is not all that fun to play per se. But it is really funny. Eventually I was able to survive for three winters until I ended up with a car full of badgers.

I think that's it for modern gaming...

This week I played:

Diablo II Resurrected for Switch - 48 minutes

Sonic Origins for Switch - 860 minutes

Progress:

D2R Switch - Just started a file in the Yuzu emulator to make sure the files I found work offline and they do. This will be my backup file to play in case I ever want to play this game while the internet has an outage. Otherwise I'd probably stick to the PC version I paid for. This emulator also has a glitch in the emulation just for this game that makes it think the left stick is drifting upward. It worked better in Ryujinx but that copy is outdated now and refuses to launch.

Sonic Origins - I finished off the rest of the modes for Sonic 1 with all emeralds, finished all the modes for Sonic CD with all time stones and 1 mode of Sonic 2 with all emeralds. I am saving all the mission modes for last.
