Recommended Posts

This week I played:

Donkey Kong Land 2 for Game Boy - 170 minutes

Gex 64: Enter the Gecko for Nintendo 64 - 440 minutes

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 64 - 53 minutes

Progress:

Donkey Kong Land 2 - I played from the 3rd area to the end of the game, getting all the Kremcoins and DK coins and completing the lost world.

Gex 64 - I played through the whole game, getting all red remotes and gold remotes. I was only missing some of the hidden silver remotes.

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 64 - I've played through 1 player mode as Mario, Donkey Kong and Link on very easy mode, unlocking Captain Falcon first and then Jigglypuff.

Top 10:

1. Tetris (NES/Famicom) - 1460 min. (#3)
2. Zero Hour (CoCo 3) - 1350 min.
3. Phantasy Star IV (Genesis) - 610 min. (#2)

Pre-NES top 10:

1. Solar Fox (Atari 2600) - 134 min. (PN#6)
2. Kaboom! (Atari 2600) - 132 min. (PN#5)
3. Raptor (Atari 2600) - 73 min.
4. Air-Sea Battle (Atari 2600) - 60 min.

9. Skyway (CoCo 1 & 2) - 40 min.

Top 10 systems:

1. NES/Famicom - 1908 min. (#2)
2. Genesis - 1392 min. (#5)
3. CoCo 3 - 1350 min.
4. Atari 2600 - 617 min. (#3)
5. Famicom Disk System - 504 min.
6. N64 - 493 min.
7. Neo Geo AES/MVS - 225 min. (#7)
8. C64 - 222 min. (#4)
9. Atari Lynx - 202 min. (#6)
10. Game Boy - 198 min. (#1)

This week it is a two game race between (Nintendo's) Tetris on the NES/Famicom and Zero Hour on the CoCo 3. None of the overall top 10 games qualify for the pre-NES list, which instead is headed by the two evergreen 2600 games Solar Fox right ahead of Kaboom! Systems wise the Genesis gets into the race, but nothing can stop the NES/Famicom becoming the most played system, even without help from the Famicom Disk System.

Two new entries to the 1000 Minute Club:

#481 Zero Hour (CoCo 3) - 1350 min.

#482 Slap Fight MD (Genesis) - 1158 min.

Also Phantasy Star IV (Genesis) enters the 5000 Minute Club with a total of 5221 min.

Slap Fight MD and some other things are here.

G/MD
Fire Shark - 19
Kyuukyoku Tiger - 9
Slap Fight MD - 321

PS1
Castlevania Chronicles - 37

SFC/SNES
Akumajou Dracula - 131

(Super Castlevania IV, internationally)
Super Castlevania IV Other Castle (ROM hack) - 37

This is a ROM hack that only works with the US version. Too bad, as I absolutely hate the sound of the whip in the international versions, which is why I don't play them.

Went to the National Videogame Museum yesterday, so I got a few classic minutes...  (all times approximate)

Jaguar

Tempest 2000 - 30 min (This was actually played on a Jaguar in store demo kiosk they had set up at the museum.  Got 364,537.  Good enough for 3rd place on the TOP GUNS scoreboard in the game.  I think I was the only one with a score entered, though.  Most people prob don't really try I guess.)

Vectrex

Berzerk - 5 min (Another display piece at the museum.  The Vectrex is set up on the counter of their "Video Game Crash Store" vignette.  They have it set up like a store from the crash with clearance signs and going out of business signs and stuff... with a counter and register and whatnot that people can sit behind and take pictures.  I don't know what score I got, but it was fun to be able to play a Vectrex.  It's a system I've wanted for quite a while.)

Atari 2600

Pac Man - 2 min (This was played on one of those big Atari display pieces (I attached a pic).  I saw my son playing with it and realized he had started a two player game of Pac Man.  So we took turns for a bit going back and forth.  He needs more practice.  lol)

Pitfall - 5 min (Son playing this one.  They had it set up in one area that was talking about third party games.  The joystick in player 1 port was messed up, though... and "up" on the joystick wasn't working, so he couldn't climb up the ladders.  I reached below and swapped the plugs so the other joystick was in port 1 and it worked fine.  You're Welcome NVM for fixing your display.  lol)

C64

Gorf - 5 min (Not me, but my son.  He tried out som Gorf on one of the displays in the vintage computer section.  I wasn't sure what it was at first... was thinking Gorf, but wasn't familiar with the C64 version, so I was second guessing myself.)

Atari 800

Pac Man - 3 min (Much better version of Pac Man than the 2600 version.  I played this on the vintage computer section.)

Apple IIe

Karateka - 5 min (My son played this one.  He was getting pretty decent at killing the baddies, but I feel he didn't get very far.  I told him about how, if you approach the princess at the end wrong, she'll kill you and he thought that was pretty silly.)

Arcade

Frogger - 5 min (Son on this one again.  We had actually been talking about Frogger the day before because I have some Frogger magnets on the fridge.  He got the 1st place on the scoreboard, but I don't think many people had played it... probably gets turned off and resets every night.  His score wasn't really that high, but high enough.  No George Costanza here.  He played some other games, too, but not sure what because we split up in the arcade.)

Galaga - 5 min (I used to play this quite a bit, but something about this machine didn't feel right.  The shots weren't coming out like I was used to or something.  Didn't do too hot.)

Gyruss - 3 min (I was better at this on the NES.)

Sunset Riders - 3 min (I was pretty terrible at this game, but it's really the first time I had ever tried the arcade version.  Still... didn't even get to the first boss.)

Robotron 2084 - 5 min (I always have to try this when I see it.  Just such a fun game and it just seems to be the epitome of 80's arcade for me.  The lights, the sounds, the crazy gameplay.  Such fun.  But I'm not that great.  I got to about the fifth level or so?)

Playstation

Crash Bandicoot - 5 min (Son playing this one.  Not sure if he had played it before.  I always liked how colorful this game was and all the fun sound effects.)

Spyro the Dragon - 5 min (My son was playing this one, too.  They had it running on a PS2 for some reason, but it was Spyro 1 I believe, so in the Classic Tracker it goes.)

And that's all I can remember right now.  :)

You know, even Atari made advertisements for the Atari 2600 version of Pac-Man, displaying the A8/5200 version on the TV next to the wrong console.

Could have been laziness... like the "Heavy 4 Switch 2600" on the front of some system boxes where they essentially photoshopped it instead of just taking a new picture.  lol

More this week than last.

Atari 2600:

Aardvark (2019) - 30 minutes for HSC

Raptor - 15 minutes for HSC

Stratovox - 30 minutes for HSC

Atari Lynx:

Joust - 25 minutes for HSC.

Maybe my favorite port of the game?

Unseen - 45 minutes.
I think I have a lot of it mapped out now.

Milton Bradley Microvision:

Blockbuster - 15 minutes.

Back to playing better, but still haven't quite cleared the second board.

Pinball - 45 minutes.

It's not nearly as bad as some people say even if it's not pinball. I haven't cleared a board yet but I'm almost there.

D7DC1183-5914-401E-9EB7-5E247135127D.thumb.jpeg.16ae391f3ea5a6b41f9f240991c97be9.jpeg

Nintendo Entertainment System:

The Battle of Olympus - 20 minutes.

Quite possibly the best game of its kind on the NES, and it's a crowded field. But everything from the sprite work to the music to the writing to the game feel is just top notch.

4B539D69-6E5F-47D0-BCAB-4BA8E5098E91.thumb.jpeg.1f489c533687ad92ea3ba2ce47be4140.jpeg

W.U.R.M. - 25 minutes.

It's not a perfect game, but it's yet another worthwhile multi-genre game that the NES library is so full of. The on-foot segments are a little too hard, and the lightgun/crew interaction boss battle segments are awkward, but it's a charming package. I wonder why it's not better regarded.

Nintendo Virtual Boy:

Virtual League Baseball - 15 minutes.

Lost by the mercy rule in the bottom of the first inning. Sheesh. Realistic players look creepy compared to the Japanese version.

Waterworld - 20 minutes.

One of the most hated-on games of all time by people who haven't played it. I like it a lot, especially compared to the movie. Very chaotic, similar in concept to the old Vectrex game Rip Off. It's a fine arcade style game that works quite well on the black and red monster.

Sega Game Gear:

GG Aleste 3 - 25 minutes.

Got to the fourth level without continuing, died.

F1 World Championship Edition - 15 minutes.

Savaged in reviews, I think this is one of the better racing games in the library. Not sure why people don't like it. It is hard to find and EU-exclusive, so mostly people just don't know it exists.

Heroes vs Demons - 60 minutes.

Couldn't get as far as last time.

D41999A1-B32A-4B94-88E8-05BDEA9AF833.thumb.jpeg.834240af18e77d5a1b771a045e8c799c.jpeg

Power Drive - 15 minutes.

Mostly just screwing around. It's the only game of its kind on the Game Gear, and it's impressive even if frustrating.

Tarzan Lord of the Jungle - 10 minutes.

There's a core of a great game here amidst the jank. It reminds me most of Super Hunchback on the Game Boy,

Sega Master System (this week's focus system):

Dead Angle - 30 minutes.

Almost beat it, died on the last boss with just a few enemies to go.

11EC09BB-BDE6-4C64-B2EE-05A5FE18DA36.thumb.jpeg.3adfc8868e37f95997fbcd517aae838d.jpeg

AE44F5B1-6950-48FA-BF61-368429416CCA.jpeg

Dynamite Dux - 35 minutes.

Died RIGHT BEFORE the last boss. That this IP was abandoned is a crying shame. It looks and sounds and plays great, and would have given the Game Gear another very solid beat-em-up.

1B67FD3F-4201-47B4-A4E8-1396A7817334.thumb.jpeg.4a19e6cbd8dc14c22c531e37c0845c97.jpeg

(Again with the trademark infringement, Sega???)

Laser Ghost - 25 minutes.

Frustrating control-fighting game without the lightgun, but playable. Excellent graphics and notably Game Gear-esque music (and I mean that in a good way).  It's a shame this is so hard to play without the lightgun as it's one of the most interesting shooting games I've ever played. The only game I know that's remotely similar is Pac Man 2: The New Adventures, but that's more of an point-and-click adventure game.

2C2F0337-CD1B-4E8E-8032-1E6EED855480.thumb.jpeg.14e188a10812e4fe9dd010cf03a4e32e.jpeg

Line of Fire - 20 minutes.

Not at all a port of the arcade game of the same name, this is a remake of the arcade and SG-1000 game Borderline, which many people here may know as Thunderground on the Atari 2600. (That's only half the game, though.) They went with normal bosses in this rather than the nuclear reactors of Borderline, somewhat to the game's detriment. You can't shoot to the sides either as you could in Borderline. In a lot of ways they took a very interesting game and made it much less interesting.

Pit Pot - 45 minutes.

A beloved game of Game Gear bootleg multicarts everywhere, it's much better on the big screen. Just another excellent Sega title that they just decided not to release on the Game Gear. Lots of missed opportunities. This is a very interesting, unique, and unusual game that everyone who likes action puzzle games should try.

A2251BDC-7207-445A-88A5-0A2C5DFB9F19.thumb.jpeg.7d6ba5cd4db641e31473d35f180d0e4a.jpeg

Rainbow Islands - 20 minutes.

A very solid port, if oddly dim.

4E936C2E-D342-428F-997A-05A031A4D615.thumb.jpeg.b654ae9b60d78116e2d8bdccfdd8ad86.jpeg

The NewZealand Story - 25 minutes.

Just as hard as it is adorable, this is a favorite of mine on the PC Engine and it was neat to try it out on the SMS. It's one of those rare cases where the NES has markedly better music than the SMS and TG-16 both.

The Ninja - 20 minutes.

This remake of arcade game Ninja Princess never came to the Game Gear because it would have resulted in many Game Gears being defenestrated. But it's fun if you calm down. (Sega's SG-1000 to SMS remakes are almost as common as Nintendo's GameCube to Wii/WiiU and Wii/WiiU to Switch remakes. It's funny that Sega dropped dozens of good SMS IPs like hot potatoes, never to be seen again, once the Genesis/Mega Drive came out.)

World Games - 60 minutes.

Beautiful and funny graphics are paired with Epyx's trademark maddening tests of controller abuse that you know so well from Winter and Summer Games. But how can I not play a game that features log rolling and tossing the caber. I was never able to make bull riding work at all, and judging from YouTube I am not alone.

Sega SG-1000:

Choplifter - 20 minutes.

Hardcore even by Choplifter standards. It looks flat-out amazing, too.

1F8A9D45-097F-4E9E-9613-3028BBFC06C3.thumb.jpeg.6cd36e8e6c9aebb13b8744c0ea868975.jpeg

N-Sub - 15 minutes.

Unusually easy for Sega, and unusually plain like most of the SG-1000's launch games. It looks somewhere between the 2600 and the INTV. Lots of fun, though!

36E398C9-FB16-4E9E-95D8-51FEAA95DEB9.thumb.jpeg.67e0d5d1ea3b4c6134bbd67ff338345a.jpeg

Star Force - 15 minutes.

I don't love this or its half brother Star Soldier, but I sure love the rest of the series!

Tiger Sega Pocket Arcade:

Sonic 3 The Hedgehog - 20 minutes. Beat the game. This is pretty much the same game as the normal handheld, but my score was 3X ArcadeUSA's, and I don't think I played 3X better. Maybe I did, though.

A pretty small week for gaming this week, with me putting just a little bit of time into Wordle plus a couple favorites on the Switch and Mrs. Skippy playing through another level Tomb Raider on the PlayStation. For the second week in a row I put off playing the Atari 2600 high score club games, since there's 3 of them this round and all 3 are new homebrew games I've never played before; which feels like way more than I want to have to sit down and learn and try to get good at. Whenever there's more than 2 games in a round I always procrastinate like crazy on playing them, but there's only one week left in the round so I'm gonna have to buck up and play them this coming week

I only played 2 games this last week (no modern):

Pokemon Blue Version for Game Boy - 780 minutes

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 64 - 89 minutes

progress:

Pokemon Blue - I decided to go ahead and get more Pokemon after all. I played the slot machines to get enough coins to buy Porygon, then went back through catching all the wild evolved form Pokemon and extras of unevolved Pokemon where you can't find the evolved form of them in the wild. I used stones on the ones like that which needed those to evolve. I will still have to level up the ones that need to.

Super Smash Bros. - I played through 1 player mode on very easy with the rest of the default characters (Samus, Yoshi, Kirby, Fox and Pikachu) then unlocked Luigi by re-completing Mario's break the targets game to trigger the battle.

Here's the summary for Week 11, running from Mar 14 - 20. We logged 4035 minutes of eligible play, playing 75 games on a total of 25 systems.

Top 10:

1. Pokemon Blue Version (Game Boy) - 780 min.
2. Dragon Quest III (Dragon Warrior III) (NES/Famicom) - 357 min.
3. Slap Fight MD (Genesis) - 321 min. (#6)
4. Zero Hour (CoCo 3) - 285 min. (#2)
5. Solar Fox (Atari 2600) - 272 min.
6. Tomb Raider (PlayStation) - 168 min.
7. Akumajou Dracula (SNES) - 131 min.
8. Al Unser Jr. Turbo Racing (NES/Famicom) - 92 min.
9. Super Smash Bros. (N64) - 89 min.
10. Kaboom! (Atari 2600) - 78 min.

Pre-NES top 10:

1. Solar Fox (Atari 2600) - 272 min. (PN#1)
2. Kaboom! (Atari 2600) - 78 min. (PN#2)
3. Lunar Leeper (VIC-20) - 75 min.
4. Asteroids (Atari 2600) - 49 min.

10. Choplifter (SG-1000) - 20 min.
10. Raptor (Atari 2600) - 20 min. (PN#3)

Top 10 systems:

1. Game Boy - 850 min. (#10)
2. NES/Famicom - 574 min. (#1)

4. Genesis - 349 min. (#2)
5. CoCo 3 - 291 min. (#3)
6. Sega Master System - 280 min.
7. PlayStation - 215 min.
8. SNES - 177 min.
9. Game Gear - 125 min.
10. N64 - 89 min. (#6)

The Game Boy has a great week, going from #10 to #1 on the systems list and taking the overall title with Pokémon Blue, more than twice the amount of minutes as runner-up Dragon Warrior/Dragon Quest III. The pre-NES games on the overall list are Solar Fox and Kaboom! which hold onto the first two positions on their own list.

None of the 75 games reach a new milestone, though of course Pokémon Blue climbs a few positions in the all-time list, from #68  to #50 and is less than 600 minutes from the 5000 Minute Club, a place which Pokémon Red already is part of, as the only Game Boy classic entry among those 38 games which have achieved 5000 minutes or more.

Toaplan and Xexex.

Edit: and Andro Dunos and Xeno Crisis

...and I also just realized that literally almost all of this was done on an emulator of some kind, as I used MAME or Arcade Archives for all of the arcade games, Mega Sg for the Genesis and Mega Drive, and MiSTer for Neo Geo. Only PC Engine Tatsujin was done on real hardware, the SuperGrafx, and even that had an optical drive emulator attached, so I almost exclusively used emulation this time, a rarity.

Arcade
Hishouzame - 45
Same! Same! Same! - 100

^ this game, the 1P Japanese arcade version of the game, is just stupid. Don't play it unless you really hate yourself. Apparently I really hate myself since this is somehow my #2 most played game in the old tracker this week. Most of this time was spent struggling to not die on stage 1.
Same! Same! Same! (2 player version) - 41

^ play this one instead
Slap Fight - 35
Tatsujin - 49
Tatsujin Ou - 73
Xexex (Japan) - 24
Zero Wing - 18

Xeno Crisis - 3

Sharp X68000

Akumajō Dracula - 225 minutes

Mr. Do! - 1 minute, 55 seconds

Spindizzy II - 40 minutes

Managed to squeeze some qualifying games in this week! I've been taking a while off of games to focus on actually getting my hardware fixed up, and this week was my IBM XT and X68000. The XT is near-ready, I'm just waiting on a keyboard adapter as the only XT-compatible keyboard I own is a degrading Keytronic foam-and-foil which I quite dislike, and the X68000 is finally good to go.

Akumajō Dracula is (of course) the classic, and I still have yet to beat it. I can get to the final stage without too much issue, I think I've used 18 continues so far, and then I just flop at the Dracula fight. Not unlike the NES version where I'm just about as bad! Someday I'll finish the game, I just don't know when that day is. Definitely a neat soundtrack, but I still have no MIDI card (I need to build a midiori) so it's just the FM version.

Mr. Do, speaking of games I'm bad at, was I think the best I've ever done. A whole four stages. Wow. (Anyone ever submit a time with seconds? This gives it to me so I may as well provide!)

And then Spindizzy II is just really cool. I've never played any of the Spindizzy stuff before but I really enjoy Cameltry, a game similarly about moving a silly object through a silly world. I saw that title screen and I just had to try it out, my gosh is it a good time! It took half of my playtime to figure out controlling stuff properly but, once I got it together, I really started enjoying the game. Definitely one I'm going to remember for the future!

I'm unsure if I'll have much time for games next week, there are something like five more obscure Japanese computers coming into the house which will need cleaned and prepped for repair, but I have a little XT-CF set up with some MDA titles that I want to give a shot on the XT. Maybe I'll get a bit of DOS playtime in? I need to figure out if the V30+8087 is going to screw me or help me, I remember hearing how a lot of stuff is meant for a straight 8088.
