NovaXpress #1 Posted September 2, 2003 Good article here on gaming's rising financial windfalls and rising creative bankrptcy, has a few things that I disagree with and makes me dislike EA even more. http://www.fortune.com/fortune/technology/...,480222,00.html There are as many polygons—the most basic picture element in a game graphic—in a single football in Madden 2004 as there were in an entire screen of Madden 2002, including players, grass, stadium—everything. Do you think this is true or a marketing lie?

chrisbid #4 Posted September 2, 2003 as i said before, im not touching a next gen console, unless there is a game that blows me away like super mario bros did in 1986, or strider in 1989, final fantasy VII in 1997, or soul calibur in 1999. I dont see it happening
hex65000 #5 Posted September 3, 2003 * * * in a single football in Madden 2004 as there were in an entire screen of Madden 2002, including players, grass, stadium—everything. - - - -- - - - Of course, there are a lack of specifics in this statement. If we are talking about Madden 2k2 for the PSx v/s the X-crate 2k4 version then there is no shocker to the statement. I just don't understand sports titles, why folks buy them, and how useless they become after the next version of the title comes out. Just put em' in a big pile and burn bUrn BURN! Hex. Just put em' in a big pile and burn bUrn BURN! Hex. [' Now it's YOUR turn to BURN Optimus Primal!' --Inferno; Beast Wars] I buy them because they're fun to play with, if you grew up with sports then you'll appreciate that there's usually some good strategy involved in order to win. Most sports can be as complex as war or chess if you get into them. And between 2 sports fans, nothing beats sports games for multiplayer action. If you think the games are useless after one year then you've bought the marketing crap that the companies have pitched to you. The games are the same, Tecmo Bowl is still fun with 15-yr old rosters, Madden 92' is still a great game, NFL2k2 is fine with 2 year old rosters. EA and the other videogame companies are lucky most people do want the most updated versions with new players because they gobble them up each year, I can wait a couple of years for the classic versions though
Sylentwulf #7 Posted September 3, 2003 I stay one year behind on any sports titles I buy (besides madden, I stay about 3-6 months behind on madden, but I make my father buy it since he comes over and plays against me) One year later, they're all $
AtariDude #8 Posted September 4, 2003 The amount of money being spent on videogames is straggering. I think there was nearly as much money spent on the Sims add-ons as there was money made from the Spiderman movie ($411 million for the Spiderman Movie). Videogames are now a big business which is why Bill G. is willing to invest so much on the Xbox because there is more money to be made there than there is productivity software. Jasoco #9 Posted September 6, 2003 And a few more years later they're only a few bucks. Sports titles are probably the cheapest and easiest to come by later on down the road.
Fretwobbler #10 Posted September 6, 2003 there is more money to be made there than there is productivity software. I think it will be a while before that is true. According to that report, EA are the 4th largest company, behind MS, Oracle and SAP. That figure is based on market capitalisation as well, not revenue and GP which are the real markers. When you can sell a game that costs ~$1500 per seat, then a further $400 per year while you use it, and sell it to tens of millions, probably hundreds of millions of people thats when gaming will take over Oracle and SAP.
