Inky #1 Posted September 7, 2003 Looking to get a HD for my ST. Any ideas or suggestions on what to get, what I need to get, and where to get it?
jens #2 Posted September 9, 2003 Try to get a megafile (30/60) or a sh205 (not sh204). You can as well use older scsi-drives but then you need a scsi-hostadopter. Another good thing is a profile 44. You have a 44 mb syquest drive for cardridges in it plus enough space to fit in a scsi-drive.
Sikor #3 Posted September 13, 2003 You can also use Paskud Interfeace to instal any IDE disc (CD too) to cartridge port for any ST. More info at: http://www.rsi.pl/~paskud/

That may be interesting. How many drives can you hook up to that device?
+Stephen Moss #5 Posted September 16, 2003 Most Atari users use the Link97 interface with an external drive although IIRC there are kits for fitting the drive internally although I can't see when it would go. You will also need driver software, there are plenty of places on web to from which you can download Atari's basic drive AHDI, just do a search although the standard driver use by most Atarians is HD Driver which supports most mass media storage formats (HD, Zip, Jazz, DVD, ATAPI compatible and probably a few other I can't remember) although for CD-ROM you will need to anther driver - Extendos I think is one. Most external drives have a SCSI through port so that you can daisychain several SCSI drives together although I'm not sure if there is a limit. I think B&C (www.myatari.com) may be the best place in the US for these unless purchasing secondhand, I know there are other dealer in the US like Bravo Sierra so do a search for them and see what they have or try Atari Workshop in the UK (www.atari-workshop.co.uk) Unless you have recieved a lot of PM's about this you would probably get more help and advice on this topic by posting it to the comp.sys.atari.st newsgroup

Ze_ro #7 Posted September 16, 2003 Try to get a megafile (30/60) or a sh205 (not sh204). What is the difference between the 205 and the 204? I happened to get a 204 a while back at a thrift store, but I haven't been able to test it out yet, since I have a serious lack of ST cables. It makes noise when I power it up though, so I'm guessing it works... that alone is worth the $10 I spent on it From what I could tell, the 204 uses a standard MFM hard drive with various adaptors to make it work with the ACSI bus on the ST, correct? --Zero

From what I could tell, the 204 uses a standard MFM hard drive with various adaptors to make it work with the ACSI bus on the ST, correct? The SH204 has only one connector, so you can only use it as last target. I think there were some problems mentioned in 'Scheibenkleister' by Claus Brod and Anton Stepper which I don't remember anymore and which I could't explain because of lack of vocabulary. I myself have taken the drive out of a 204, took the scsi-controller and used a syquest drive with it for tests. At the moment the case is opened and I use the power supply to provide an icd scsi-adaptor, a hard disk and a cd-rom with power. This works fine. The SH205 is sort of a megafile looking at the case and at the board which is an all-in-one thing. So you are quite correct. Btw: You can set 'two' instead of 'various' :-)

You have to be careful on the megafiles, some have MFM controllers and the later units have SCSI controllers and that is the best way to go. I would highly recommend going with a Megafile 44 or 88 with a Syquest, the cartridges are readily available and provide you with unlimited storage and you could have multi-OS setups on different cartridges so you can load up whatever "flavor" you need each time.
