ApolloBoy #1 Posted September 11, 2003 The 7800 rarity guide here I find questionable. Some of the games' rarities are way off, like Alien Brigade. Here are some rarities that I question... Ace of Aces - Real Rarity: 2, My Rarity: 3 Alien Brigade - Real Rarity: 2, My Rarity: 5 Ballblazer (red end label) - Real Rarity: 5, My Rarity: 2 Crack'ed - Real Rarity: 2 My Rarity: 4 Dark Chambers - RR: 1, MR: 3 Desert Falcon - RR: 1, MR: 3 Fight Night - RR: 3, MR: 4 Food Fight - RR: 3, MR: 2 Ikari Warriors - RR: 4, MR: 7 Midnight Mutants - RR: 3, MR: 5 Planet Smashers - RR: 4, MR: 6 Scrapyard Dog - RR: 2, MR: 3 Summer Games - RR: 2, MR:4 Super Huey - RR: 2, MR: 4 Winter Games - RR: 2, MR: 3 That's about it. MegaManFan #2 Posted September 11, 2003 Well AB you're not the first to bring this up.. in fact not even the third or fourth since when +I+ complained about it. For whatever reason though the Al's seem reluctant to tinker with the 7800 rarity scale, but it's definitely way short of the mark on certain games. holygrailvideogames.com #3 Posted September 12, 2003 The rarity guide is off for the 7800. I know how long it took me to complete my collection. Some games were just about impossible to find. The rarity list isn't accurate in my opinion.
MegaManFan #4 Posted September 12, 2003 You'll certainly get no argument from me about bumping up Mean 18 Golf, Planet Smashers, Alien Brigade or Basketbrawl.

Just something we haven't gotten to on the massive list of Things To Do. But you all are right, we need to sit down and revise it. Part of the reason for the low ratings on some games was because of O'Shea's. We couldn't very well rate a game highly that anyone with an internet connection could purchase brand new for 80 cents. However, they have sold out of many titles and they are obviously much harder to find now. I promise to amend this soon. Thanks for poking us with a stick. Inky #6 Posted September 12, 2003 I promise to amend this soon. Thanks for poking us with a stick. Pointed sticks' date=' eh? Oh oh oh. Gregory DG #7 Posted September 12, 2003 The 7800 rarity guide here I find questionable. Some of the games' rarities are way off' date=' like Alien Brigade.[/quote'] Yeah, I definitly think the Alien Brigade one is WAAAY off. Rarity 2? Dunno where that came from. O'Shea's never sold it for 80 cents...
Alex #8 Posted September 12, 2003 There were other dealers besides Oshea's that were considered (Best, B&C for example). All the games of 1 or 2 rarity could be easily purchased NIB at the time we made the list. We knew it would need amendment as titles eventually sold out. Gregory DG #9 Posted September 12, 2003 There were other dealers besides Oshea's that were considered (Best' date=' B&C for example).[/quote'] Was price ever considered as a component of rarity? I mean, you can go on Ebay and get Asteroids for nothing but getting a copy of AB would probably cost an arm and a leg. (Both are available.) I'll bet those other retailers weren't selling AB for 80 cents.
Alex #10 Posted September 12, 2003 Price is something to consider but it's not something were going to use as a direct index. Prices from a dealer and prices on eBay are two different things. On eBay it tends to be a truer market price because that is what people are willing to pay. A dealer can charge $50 for Asteroids but that doesn't mean he is selling any or that it is rare. Nobody else was selling games for 80 cents at all. But AB wasn't singularly expensive anywhere either. Even if it was $10, it was still available in quantity for anyone who wanted it. It's a rarity guide, not a value/price guide.
Gregory DG #11 Posted September 12, 2003 It's a rarity guide' date=' not a value/price guide.[/quote'] I know, but generally rarity dictates the price. Therefore, you can get a rough idea of how rare something is by it's price.
Alex #12 Posted September 12, 2003 True, and we do consider price as an indicator just not as an index. There are many exceptions to the typical price/rarity correlation.
+Mitch #13 Posted September 12, 2003 For what it's worth, I picked up Alien Brigade a couple years ago for $15 from a dealer. And there were other dealers that had it for $20 as well. So, at the time, it was probably the correct rating. It's just in need of an update now. Mitch
MegaManFan #14 Posted September 12, 2003 There are still bargains once in a blue moon, they just get harder and harder to come by. Here's irony for ya - I picked up a CIB new Fatal Run from someone on here for $20, but I paid $23 for a CIB new Mario Bros. on eBay! I do think Mario Bros. is also more rare than indicated though. In theory, to me at least, anything O'Sheas is still selling is a 1, anything else probably needs realignment.
holygrailvideogames.com #15 Posted September 13, 2003 I bought my copy of Fatal Run from O'Sheas for 80 cents, but that was at least 5 years ago. I bought one copy of every 7800 game that I didn't have at the time.
Mayhem #16 Posted September 15, 2003 If you need to do a separate list for PAL rarities, then let me know and I can put it together eg. Mean 18 Golf - common as dirt Dark Chambers - bloody hard to find! Lots of discrepancies between NTSC and PAL availability...
ApolloBoy #17 Posted September 17, 2003 If you need to do a separate list for PAL rarities, then let me know and I can put it together eg. Mean 18 Golf - common as dirt Dark Chambers - bloody hard to find! Lots of discrepancies between NTSC and PAL availability... You PAL people sure have it easy! It seems Fatal Run, Alien Brigade, and Ninja Golf are much easier to find over there than here in the US.
Mayhem #18 Posted September 17, 2003 I'll agree on the first two, but Ninja Golf isn't that easy to find over here either. It was one of the last Atari branded titles I got for the 7800 on PAL. Probably because it was one of the last releases for the machine. Of course we've got Sentinel... which really is pretty common considering, it's only marked high because naturally you Americans have to import it
DeV0 #19 Posted September 18, 2003 They are all hard to find over here except, ms pacman, ball blazer, dk, dkjr. There is no common as dirt and mean 18??? Very hard to find.
sku_u #20 Posted September 18, 2003 Ninja Golf is one of only a handful of games I actually play on the 7800 regularly. I love that game. I don't know what happened to them all. I bought mine on Ebay NIB in a lort with a bunch of other games for what worked out to a few bucks a cart.

Obviously you've got a slight head start being in Australia to get those HES releases I've had 8-10 copies of Mean 18 Golf PAL through my hands over the last couple of years getting lots and auctions for my collection. It's not that hard to find here, in fact I'd almost say it was one of the most common titles you can find. Perhaps if you need it DeV0, you can have a look at eBay UK Except there aren't any on there currently... how typical
