Where to get a Stereo Pokey Board?

Recommended Posts

Hi, ever since I bought a donor board to repair my 600xl with, I've had a spare, perfectly good Pokey chip just lying around. I'm thinking of using it for a stereo mod, but I can't seem to find where to purchase a stereo pokey board. Does anyone know where I can get one?

@The Mr. Video  where are you based?

You can get modern stereo upgrades, (albeit not actually requiring a Pokey chip) so maybe that isn't what you are in the market for.

Lotharek sells them in Poland (albeit not actually requiring a Pokey chip): https://lotharek.pl/productdetail.php?id=264

Retrolemon in the UK: https://retrolemon.co.uk/atari-8bit-upgrades/147-pokeymax-stereo.html

Brewing academy in the states sells this which might work for you as uses 2 x pokey chips, and gives you a ps/2 keyboard:

I'm based in the US. I think the Brewing Academy board would be the closest to what I want, but it seems that it requires the interface board with the ps/2 and headphone jack. What I had in mind was that I was going to also mod my computer for s-video and route the video and audio to one cable.

You don't have to install nor use this board. Stereo will work with no problem without it.

Maybe @tf_hh still has some Stereo Pokey boards.

By default my stereo board is an EOL product, because it needs a second POKEY (like all standard stereo boards) and POKEYs are getting rare and expensive.

But due to non-delivery of PokeyMAX these times (and other expansions) I will make a small batch, some people ask me to do so.

FYI Mytek designed the board the Brewing Academy is selling. More info on the board https://ataribits.weebly.com/tk-ii-stereo.html

Mytek is active on this board if you have any questions

The board I made and that TBA sells, incorporates the functionality of the U-switch that Lotharek used to sell, as well as my TK-II interface for PS/2 keyboards.

From what I gather there was someone else on AA that had this same board and did not require the PS/2 keyboard aspect, so they simply left out the PIC16F1847 chip and were left with a dual Pokey stereo board with built-in U-Switch. I don't recall if they also left out the small interface board and directly wired to the main stereo board for the audio outputs, but it would be a possibility.

Here's the schematics:

This would most likely be a better option.

But those of us who replace their POKEY with PokeyMax or SimpleStereoV4 have a spare POKEY that we could use to upgrade another Atari 8 boy computer using a Dual POKEY Upgrade board that needs two real POKEYs.

Come to think of it, I received two POKEYs years ago from Sascha that I still have to install.  Plus my PokeyMaxs.

Guess that means I too need some Dual POKEY Upgrade boards (without PC-Keyboard-stuff).

Sincerely

Any word on availability of this?  Lotharek's site said they were in testing and the website showed a nice stack o them, but that was many months ago and no word on a sale date yet.

You'd have to ask Lotharek about that.  I know Candle has been working on it, but don't know if it's available yet or when it will be.

Sincerely

Mathy

Hokey, a Pokey replacement, will be released in the next months.

https://atariage.com/forums/topic/321741-hokey-demo/

Sound only at this stage though

There is no intention to support keyboard scan or serial I/O in (at least basic and standard versions of) HOKEY as these are of no use on the 7800 and probably are not used in any arcade games either.

It may be possible to add keyboard scan and serial I/O as an option to a future advanced version, but that is an idea for a future iteration of the advanced HOKEY, maybe.

In the first post he stated that this could be as cheap as $10 which makes it 1/4 the cost of a PokeyOne, which is essentially the same thing (audio/paddles only, no SIO functions). That would be a fantastic price point if possible, bringing it back to what Pokey's went for 7 years ago.

It's based on an FPGA, so I'm curious what makes this any more feasible to make than the PokeyMax? Seems like it should suffer from the same supply line shortages.

Pokeyone's are $57+$5 shipping now. And, actually not available at the moment either.

I've recently built a batch of Mytek's TKII stereo boards with the small input/output board. I've got 3 extras completed. No pokey's or cables included.  I've briefly tested them all in my 800xl. I'd be interested in trading one for a good working joystick like a slikstik, tacII, or something more modern. DM me if anyone's interested.
