Epyx 500 joysticks

I just got a lot of stuff in and there were 2 of the Epyx 500 joysticks in with it. They are the most comfortable that I've found in that it takes longer before my hand cramps, however,........do they HAVE to make that clicky noise? I didn't know if it was just something inherent in these guys or if there was a fix for it.....

ungh the 500 xj... those things always left my hand locked in a crampy claw like grip, and every time I used one I was afraid I'd need surgery to get it out of my hand. and the pain from using that fire button... OWWWWwwww

These have been my personal favorite for a long time now. Though they take some getting used to, I think they are great. All of my higher scores were achieved with this stick. The "clicky" noise, however, is permanent. I haven't figured a way to alleviate that. . . you just get used to it after awhile. I play Decathlon all the time with it, and I've learned to ignore the "click". The only problem I've had is sweat. When my hand becomes the least bit sweaty, it becomes harder to hold the controler without it "sliding" out of my hand. I've considered using a glove like the box depicts. . . but that is just a bit too cheesy for me. Glad to see another EPYX 500 fan out there!!!!

Also, WICO made a joystick extremely similar to the Epyx 500. Rather than having the hard plastic casing, the joystick was made of a rubbery material. It was a little bit easier on the hand, but still had that infernal "clicking!"

yea i hated that too (add that to my hate list above.)

 

I hate HATE a controller that makes noise.

I was playing with one of the Epyx last night and my cat went into attack/stalk mode with his eyes glued to the joystick. If he attacks it/me and messes up one of my games (much less the joystick), he's going to become that fur rug I've always thought would look nice in front of my fireplace. At 24 pounds, he would make a substantial rug......

Those are the main joysticks I use. They're as durable as a tank. There are only certain games that they are not well suited for--Spider-Man is one.

 

I've been using them so many years, I must be deaf to all the clicking.

I loved the 500XJ. Extremely comfortable, very responsive. The "clicking" noises are because it uses microswitches instead of membrane contacts, which accounts for the responsiveness. No way to eliminate that, unfortunately

The Epyx 500XJ - love it or hate it.

 

As someone who loves Epyx, but hates the 500XJ, I think I'm going to have to get a shrinkwrapped one and leave it sealed.

Ahhh the Epyx 500 XJ...good to see a few fellow fans here.

 

We've been using the XJ for ages..in fact we liked them so much, we ordered in a few new/old stock from the US (We are in Australia).

 

Funnily enuff the microswitch clicking never bothered me.

 

Does anyone use different sticks for different games? The XJ or a Bug if you can find one for platformers etc, The Wico Boss (another EXCELLENT stick) for drivers etc. is a personal fave.

I like the clicky noise, personally.

 

And the 500 is not a bad controller.

 

However the Mindscape Powerplayer is da Shizzznit!

I think that the 500XJ is the most reliable joystick Epyx made...

 

It's been my primary stick since my dad bought me a set for Christmas of 1987... I don't think any controller can compare to the longetivity and responsiveness of the 500XJ.

I still have my original wico bat stick, and id take it over a pile of xjs any day. and my Sansei controller still going strong too, both from the mid 80s. and my tac-2 also. down with the evil claw grip carpal tunnel inducing xj. that cat knew evil when it saw it.

Okay, if you're on the phone comforting someone who just ended a relationship and decide to try to stealthily play a game of Gyruss while talking, do not use the 500XJ. I got totally busted last night....I wasn't doing that uh-huh, uh-huh (read-I am paying no attention to you) and was actually carrying on a conversation and I (foolishly) thought the person on the other end of the line had no clue. WRONG!

 

PS The cat has declared a moratorium on attacking the joysticks.....
