RCmodeler #1 Posted September 12, 2003 I found this article, "Nintendo unveils GameCube. Can it face the competition?" in Newsweek, September 2000. Anyway, it included these stats: Millions of Units Generation Console ----- 30.0 8-bit Atari 2600 (source: Digital Press) ----- ??? 8-bit Nintendo ES ??? 8-bit Sega MS ----- 24.0 16-bit Super Nintendo 14.2 16-bit Sega Genesis ----- 15.0 32/64 Nintendo 64 27.1 32/64 Sony PlayStation ----- ??? 128-bit GameCube 3.0 128-bit Playstation 2 5.0 128-bit Dreamcast U.S. & Canada statistics; Sources: Nintendo, Sony, Sega . If anyone has updated info, please share!
Clock #2 Posted September 12, 2003 Very interesting, I bet that PS2 figure is huge now. They have actually ceased production for the Gamecube now, because thay have a huge amount of unsold units. Look for mega cheap Gamecubes around Xmas time
Sylentwulf #3 Posted September 13, 2003 Playstation 2 just hit 60 million yesterday (or the day before) (OK, looks like it's units SHIPPED, but still) http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=stor..._videogame_dc_1
liveinabin #4 Posted September 13, 2003 The DC was in front of the PS2 - glory days (weep). I don't think GC is finished yet - yeah, they are running third place but there's SO MUCH money in this industry now that they can afford to keep going - after all, there were years of Gameboy availability when no-one was really bothered with it, but it kept going until the interest picked up again (Pokemon). This is what Nintendo do. As long as there are enought kids, there'll be Nintendo - the adult market is just a happy bonus for them:). Mind, I've been wrong before. Right, I'm putting $20 on world domination by the Wonderswan - any takers?

Look for mega cheap Gamecubes around Xmas time [/quote'] Don't bet on it. They've "Halted" production. You don't honestly think Sony has been pumping out PS/2's non-stop for the past .... what is it now 5? 6 years? They've halted the lines on many occasions and the PS/2 is still ridiculosly overpriced.
RCmodeler #7 Posted September 13, 2003 The NES Sold 62 millionThe Master System (SMS) 10 million Those numbers and the "60 million PS2s shipped" number are both worldwide stats. I'm only interested in U.S.+Canada numbers. Last I heard, PS2=40 million in North America. Anyone have confirmation?

liveinabin #10 Posted September 14, 2003 Yes they have. But there aren't many burners around for those little discs. Gotta hand it to Nintendo for coming up with the perfect piracy solution.
Ze_ro #11 Posted September 14, 2003 -----24.0 16-bit Super Nintendo 14.2 16-bit Sega Genesis ----- Can anyone confirm this? I thought the 16-bit wars were closer than that... --Zero
liveinabin #12 Posted September 14, 2003 Sorry, is this just for the US or world sales? The 16 bit wars had VERY different results in different territories.
King Atari #13 Posted September 15, 2003 -----24.0 16-bit Super Nintendo 14.2 16-bit Sega Genesis ----- Can anyone confirm this? I thought the 16-bit wars were closer than that... --Zero I'm pretty sure the numbers were much closer, especially in the US. The Genesis had a two-year head start, and was able to knock Nintendo from the #1 spot. Eventually, the systems shared almost equal control of the industry. Really, was there really any others during the time? Nintendo did regain the lead at the very end, but only to be knocked down again by the PS1 during the next round of console wars.
