Season 20 Round 14 - 1943 The Battle of Midway

1943 hasn't been selected for the HSC since September 2006.  Interestingly the 1942/3 NES game manuals mark the first appearances of Capcom's Captain Commando character as a "fictional spokesman" for Capcom USA touting the NES "Challenge Series."  Here are the other games in the Challenge Series (1986-1989):  https://fictionalcrossover.fandom.com/wiki/Captain_Commando

Started off with some 1942 (don’t want to be lost when playing the sequel ?). I don’t dislike it, it’s just that 1943 is just that good, it’s hard to go back. Kind of like Ms. Pac-Man to Pac-Man perhaps.

1943 is great, and I like choosing where to add upgrade points. I’ve been playing where I start with everything in defensive power, then add more to others. I gotta rtfm tho so I can be sure of what I’m doing lol.

This is a game where I score very low without turbo, and then it turns into a whole other game when I turn it on (and use the NES Advantage joystick). That is looking like my preferred way to play.

On the subject of turbo- it’s in the rules that it’s allowed, but I’ve always thought of it as cheating light. I’m not arguing that we should do away with it (I do like the game more with it after all), but I do understand if anyone argues against it.

Anyway, my first score to submit (I also died at the level 3 boss):

255,800 - lvl 3 boss, turbo

In my opinion there are a handful of games that are tedious without turbo and this is one of them.  If not having to button mash for hours increases your level of appreciation (and/or comfort, looking at you carpal tunnel) for a game then by all means, turn on the turbo.  Dodging enemy fire isn't any easier no matter how fast your cannon is firing.

Hmm, I'll have to try it again. Does shooting make your energy counter tick down faster? Is turbo quickly killing you? lol

That would be rather counter productive if shooting depleted your health, seeing as how dependent the player is upon shooting to progress.

Nah, turbo wasn't killing me.  It's just that you need to use the charge attack to kill some enemies more quickly.  If you don't care about points to the extent that I do, then turbo definitely helps.  Be careful when using it on the POW icons, though.  You might cycle past the item you want.
