Overlay for Grover's Music Maker

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

Has anybody taken on the rewarding task of desigining or creating a Kid's controller overlay for Grover's Music Maker? I have the cart (made by Hozer) and my two kids have just started getting into the CCW games (they love Cookie Monster Munch and Alpha Beam with Ernie) and I would love to introduce them to Grover but they really like the overlays...

Anyway, if anyone is making these let me know - I'll be first in line to buy one.. :)

Thanks,

this is Dale from AtariCart. What a great idea, making overlays. Can you send me a high res (600 dpi ) scan of the cart and any other materials you might have for this game. Also, if yor willing, send me high res scans of any other overlays so I can match the designs. I might get these printed up later and as a thank I would be happy to give you a couple for free for helping out. I'll see what I can do.

Great Idea.

Dale

I've already got one underway to go with the label I designed (see below). I had to put the overlay project aside for other things. I originally planned to make versions of all the overlays for the Keyboard controller and Video Touch Pad (for those without Kid's controllers) but didn't have the time. However, I'll try to finish the Grover overlay this weekend if I can. I'll just post the image here and you can print it out yourself.

I should have said thanks for doing this back then and I apologize. I obviously didn't have time either. The project came to a halt. Too many things were going on in my life at the time. Though I hope to eventually put all the Activision labels and other almost finished products online in my new web site, that won't be for awhile as I started my own company and things get really busy. doc4design.com

i too would like to have overlays.

Hmm, I know someone who could get these printed up in the same quality (and type of material) as the originals used. If someone does make a high-resolution version of the overlay, please let me know. :)

I will admit that if this had come out when I was still a child, I would've gotten it, because Grover was my favorite Muppet as a baby. :P

Albert, I still have the beginning of the Grover Overlay, let me see what I can do. I'll just pass the file onto you for a few samples in payment. If you're interested?

Works for me--would be cool to see a high-quality Grover overlay. :)

Is this (game/cart) available? It says prototype on the list here. I love making overlays, and I would be down for coming up with something. Does an actual overlay exist? Or is this purely a creative venture?

The game is available here in binary form, but no one has come out and mass produced carts for it. No overlay exists (at least one hasn't been discovered) so this is purely a creative venture.

Milkman, would you be interested in a joint venture on this. I don't have tons of time, but if we combine our efforts maybe this would be easier. I'm not sure I have any artwork for it, of course it's been years since I've seen where I left off.

Sure! Is this something we will have to be careful no to step on any copywrite toes, being that Grover is probably a licensed character? I guess since this is purely for our useage and not for pubilcation in the since of making money, we should be ok.

I can work on some concepts, upload or pm them, and we can go from there. This is bad, but what controller is used for this?

This controller:

Atari 2600 Kid's Controller

Here are some scans of overlays for it (not very high resolution, though);

Alpha Beam with Ernie

Cookie Monster Munch

Oscar's Trash Race

Big Bird's Egg Catch

My question is which buttons are used in this game? I noticed all the overlays are different. What do the controls do also?

MilkMan, do you do carton art? I noticed a great artist in the Go Fish competition, maybe we can enlist some assistance there as well. Nathan Strum, I think was his name.

There's a detailed review of the game over at AtariProtos.com:

AtariProtos.com: Grover's Music Maker

According to Matt, "Children can also make Grover flail about in pain... err... I mean dance to his own beat (hehe) by pressing the various buttons on the Kids Controller."

I do not have one of these controllers, so we'll need demensions. I usually have a controller of whatever project I'm working on. It helps when you print out a prototype for fitment. Measurement corrections are easily made.

Unfortunately I can't help you with that right now, on either the overlay front or the controller as my stuff is boxed up (I am moving soon). When I unpack I can loan you a kid's controller and/or overlays, but that's not going to be for a month or so.

Well if you like I can draw you up both a label art and a overlay for Grover's Music Maker. I know how to draw Grover and I can recreate the same style label and overlay like the other Sesame Street games I just need some one to scan me a high rez overlay of any of the Sesame Street game overlays like Big Bird.

Heres how I've done with Dumbo game.
