Lumpbucket #1 Posted September 17, 2003 Hi, I want to buy a copy of Space Instigators, but I live in a PAL country. I know a while ago Chris said he intended to make a PAL edition, but the AtariAge store doesn't say what formats are available with the carts. So, my questions are: Is there a PAL edition of Space Instigators, and if so does the AtariAge store sell PAL carts?
Spector #2 Posted September 17, 2003 I asked about this a few weeks ago, and the word is that there are no plans to make a PAL version. It would be easy to make a hack of the NTSC game so that the colours would look right on a PAL TV (though you would need PAL60 compatability on your TV), though whether this will be done remains to be seen. Lumpbucket #3 Posted September 17, 2003 :-( Thats a real shame. I do have a PAL60 capable TV, but I sometimes plug my Atari into the TV card in my Amiga, which requires a real PAL display.
Lumpbucket #4 Posted September 18, 2003 Hmmm... an idea. If I were to buy an NTSC cart now, but someone did an PAL version later, are the EPROMs socketed, and is it easy to open the cart without marking or ruining the label? I have access to an EPROM burner, so I could blow any future PAL version myself, but I would want to keep the label in perfect condition.
Thomas Jentzsch #5 Posted September 18, 2003 Someone (me?) could hack the homebrew into PAL50 quite easily for you (50Hz, colors adjusted, but no speed adjustments). But that shouldn't be done without Chris' permission. Maybe you should contact him directly. I think it should be very easy for him to create a PAL50 version. Lumpbucket #6 Posted September 18, 2003 Yeah, I'll email him. It would be really nice if AtariAge could sell me a copy with the label not applied (ie still on a paper backing), so that I could install the PAL ROM and then apply the label without causing it any damage. I guess i'll email them too

But if it's PAL50 rather than PAL60, surely there will be a speed adjustment of 17.5%?
Thomas Jentzsch #8 Posted September 18, 2003 But if it's PAL50 rather than PAL60, surely there will be a speed adjustment of 17.5%? Speed adjustments are quite tricky if the game isn't designed for easy adjustments. Sometimes only a major redesign can fix this, so this can only be done by somebody who understands the code quite well (e.g. the original author). BTW: AFAIK all Activision PAL conversions where done without any speed adjustments.
Spector #9 Posted September 18, 2003 What i mean is that it would be easier to just change the colours to work on a PAL TV and leave everything else alone, because most European TV's do 60HZ anyway. The 50Hz conversion should never be done again. In the 80's it was necessary because most people didn't have the PAL60 option, but now everyone does - just changing the colours will be enough, and it will be faster too. Cybergoth #10 Posted September 19, 2003 Aarrrr! Since I want t'buy a PAL version o' Space Instigators soon, I'll probably ask Christopher wether I can help him convertin' it, if he doesn't find t'time t'do it himself. Greetin's Manuel
Thomas Jentzsch #11 Posted September 19, 2003 Yes, but don't forget Pete's Amiga.
Christopher Tumber #12 Posted September 19, 2003 I've just finished PAL50 and PAL60 conversions of Space Instigators. They should be available through Atari Age shortly. There's no speed compensation for the PAL50 version, I can't see any way to do it without fairly major revisions (several objects depend upon the framerate for their timing) and given how long it's taken me to get these relatively modest conversions done I wouldn't expect that to happen anytime soon... rasty #14 Posted September 19, 2003 Hi Chris! There's no speed compensation for the PAL50 version Humm personally, I think I'll like the little slow-down that the PAL50 version will feature compared to the NTSC one! Regards! Rasty.-
