Krytol #1 Posted September 17, 2003 I just picked up a (badly tattered) copy of Congo Bongo. Okay, I'm not too slick when comes to actually PLAYING some VCS games. The manual's not to clear on this: htf do I cross the water? See pic.
NovaXpress #2 Posted September 17, 2003 The problem with Congo Bongo is that the perspective tricks your eyes. To cross the water, stand on the shore and press directly left as you jump.

Krytol #4 Posted September 17, 2003 Ok cool, I got it.
NovaXpress #5 Posted September 17, 2003 Play Congo Bongo with the standard U-D-R-L movements. Don't try to go diagonal.
King Atari #6 Posted September 17, 2003 I love the 2600 Congo Bongo. The graphics aren't much, but it's fun. Once you get the controls down, it plays pretty well.

I actually like the graphics - kinda different for the VCS and quite colorful. I like the shimmery water effects on the first screen. Not so much on the 2nd... Interesting game. Brad2600 #8 Posted September 18, 2003 I like the Colecovision version. Nothing against the VCS version though. It's still not my type of game though.
StanJr #9 Posted September 18, 2003 Yeah, I used to like Congo Bongo a lot as a kid, but once I heard about the easy high score cheat, it kind of killed the game a little. I don't use the cheat, but I still know its there. The game gets really tough after round 5.
Desolate One #10 Posted September 18, 2003 Absolutely dreadful. I sometimes feel like putting an end to my 5200 copy by hammer and fire but yelid when I realize I'm not a Neanderthal.

From a High Score judge perspective I'd like to know (PM if its not well known)

Mendon #13 Posted September 18, 2003 Just my opinion but I always thought that Congo Bongo was a TERRIBLE arcade game and even worse for the home systems. I couldn't see anyone buying this game... then: Congo Bongo Guess I should have bought a few of them back when they were cheap...sigh.... Mendon As far as the Intelly version goes, it's got to be the rarest game out there. I'm not surprized at the price. Regardless, on any system it's still dreadful! Inky #15 Posted September 18, 2003 I still don't think Congo Bong was all that bad of a port. The first screen looks pretty good, except for the blotch in the bottom right of the screen. In fact, I bet Andrew Davie or THomas could make the main screen look better by losing that blotch.
Desolate One #16 Posted September 18, 2003 I still don't think Congo Bong was all that bad of a port. You have got to be kidding! Then again the arcade was no winner either. wh, where's that coconut going!? Looks like over there. NO! That's it's "shadow"!
Inky #17 Posted September 18, 2003 I loved the arcade game! It was a great game, and once you got the hang of the perspective, it was alot of fun!
Desolate One #18 Posted September 18, 2003 Because of this thread and Inky's defense of this game, I want to play it right now! Although I'm at work and can't. No matter, I'll just have to wait until I get home!
Godzilla #19 Posted September 18, 2003 I thought they did OK considering the 2600s pain at isometric 3d. I mean, go on, how many other 2600 games actual managed an isometric display? try to think?
MegaManFan #20 Posted September 18, 2003 Crystal Castles?
Krytol #21 Posted September 18, 2003 Crystal Castles? That's not technically isometric is it?
Inky #22 Posted September 18, 2003 Crystal Castles? Desert Falcon
bloodreptile #23 Posted September 18, 2003 Congo Bongo on the Atari 2600. Who would have thought it was possible. One of the first 3d isometric games and I was crap at it in the arcades. Does anyone know if the CBS coleco version is any good... the 2600 looks a bit ropey.. oh well ebay here I coume.
Godzilla #24 Posted September 18, 2003 Crystal Castles? Desert Falcon right, and how many more? and i dont really consider 2600 desert falcon an iso metric game as it really didnt have isometric graphics imho, just diagnol scrolling. so we have TWO 2600 games that managed an isometric display... see my point? and congos iso display is far more detailed than tha monochromatic super-chunky bgs in crystal castles (which might be why cc plays better since its not busting ass just to make the background graphics,)
Goochman #25 Posted September 18, 2003 Whats sad is the 2600 is prob better than the Atari 800 version! Then again 2 x 0 is still 0!
