SPIKE #1 Posted September 17, 2003 does anyone know what is going on with this? is anyone going to complete it? it's the main reason why i bought a GP32 to begin with! thanks!!!
rasty #2 Posted September 18, 2003 Hi Spike! Which emulator do you mean, VCS32 or gp2600? If it's the former, then I can help Let's first say that "complete" is a vague status.. right now, it's "complete" in its 0.1 version Anyway, to be more precise, VCS32 is a port of a PC Atari 2600 emulator (Virtual VCS by Dan Boris). The GP32 version I've done is "complete" since the emulator has been fully ported. Actually, it's been enhanced in some areas: sound was added (much thanks to Mike again!), plus some emulation bugs fixed. It also uses the Stella profile by Voch to recognize roms. But I believe you mean "complete compatibility", so, well.. that's not easy to achieve of course! First of all I should focus on speed, which would eliminate frameskip and therefore most collision bugs. Then I should look into fixing other bugs. I could also look into using a completely different emulator core, such as Stella (since I really don't want to re-invent the wheel!). About when the above could get done, well, I do plan on resuming work on it, but I have some things with higher priority on my schedule, that have been waiting for longer, like finishing "Bounce!"! I'll sure update here whenever the emu evolves! Regards, Rasty.-

Belgarath #5 Posted September 19, 2003 VCS32 is a great start and thanks for porting a 2600 emulator to the GP32, however when I read it was ported from Virtual VCS I thought oh dear, as in all fairness it is a very old and incomplete emulator, I understand though that some emulators are easier to port than others. In my opinion the best one to port would be Z26 but I believe it would be a lot harder to port for the GP32? I still think using another emulator core is the way to go though. rasty #6 Posted September 19, 2003 Hi! when I read it was ported from Virtual VCS I thought oh dear, as in all fairness it is a very old and incomplete emulator, I understand though that some emulators are easier to port than others. Exactly, Virtual VCS is pure C and I've already started a Virtual VCS conversion for the PalmOS some time ago, so I knew the sources better than other emus.. In my opinion the best one to port would be Z26 but I believe it would be a lot harder to port for the GP32? z26 has x86 assembler parts, which require a rewrite if you want to port it to platforms other than the Xbox! Ciao! Rasty.-
