Cross your fingers for me, please!

Recommended Posts

I'm at work right now fretting going home. I left for work at 1:20 this afternoon and the eye passed over my area a little while after that. The river by my apartment was way over its banks and getting higher, making my little first-floor place a target.

I guess if it did hit, the Xante cartridges will become even more rare :(

I'm heading home in about an hour...gulp.

Good luck to everyone who happens to be in the path of the hurricane.

Hope you all make it out with no problems.

Our power went out around 6:15 tonight and it came back at almost exactly 10:00. I think that's one of the fastest times ever around here (less than 4 hours). I got to see Survivor, but it was on a tiny black and white TV with dying batteries. My screen kept getting smaller and smaller. I hope that's the last big storm now. I hope we get to move to a better/safer place next year:

You guys did it! We made it through the storm!!!

What a night. We never "lost" power, but it cut in and out for most of the night. I am not worried about the food or anything, but if that sump pump stopped running, we were in trouble.

About 11 last night, the power was getting ready to go. I decided to fill the crawlspace with what I would need to disassemble the pump itslef and drive the pump shaft with a cordless drill. I figured the sump was filling about every five minutes (thats the better part of 50 gallons, by the way), if I could have it apart in 10 minutes, I/the basement would only be "damp". The worst was over by 2, and we laid down until dawn (sleep is not really a good word there). House made noises like a freakin horror movie.

Those are the sorts of decisions you don't want to make. I have to say I have not been quite that scared in a long time. I really feel for all those people who did not get lucky. We spent the day helping neighbors who had it worse than we did.

I really appreciate the support. The funny thing is, not a single game thing was hurt. I may need a few days of rest, but otherwise all in good shape.

:) Once again, AA people rock!

Hm, looks like Cassidy's cellar is either made wrong or something needs to be fixed there. Why else should water get into your cellar? :?

Where I come from, many cellars are build below the very high ground water level. But I've never heard of such a pump. Except when building the cellar, then the pumps are running all the time.

Or are you living in a swamp? :?

Sump Pumps are very common in basements at least on the East coast of the US. My basement has one, although the only time water gets in is when we have sustained terrential downpours.

Ahh, I think I got it now. :)

It's not your cellar, it is a problem with the undersized canalization, right?

[edit] stupid me, i didn't notice it was over already :P [/edit]

If you leave your arcades in the basement, and if you have time, please unscrew the boards and put them somewhere high and dry. Cabinets can be rebuilt/repainted. Boards can not.

Good luck with Isabel, and just be safe. A collection is not worth dying for. For most people that is.

Most two level homes in this area are half basements, and they are set in clay. There is so much ground water pressure they have to make a system to reduce it, or it comes into the house. The sump is designed to do that.

My house has underground drains below the foundation that go into a well (I guess thats what you would call it) and then get drained out. Its the design of the house, and works quite well (provided that the power doesn't go out). I plan on getting a UPS and wiring it into the pump. Even at lower than normal speeds, a battery driven pump could drain the well in just a minute or two. That, and it will probably be a while before this happens again.

Because of the storm, they are now telling us not to use our tap water for drinking or dishes, brushing teeth. What a freaking mess.

BTW, Tempest, LMAO! :P Grr. Pirate.

I understand. We have the same problem here.

As a student I worked on a construction side and I saw how they completely sealed the cellars. It looked quite expensive, but they told me it is 100% effective during the whole liftetime of the building.

Maybe we should some unemployed engineers from Germany to the US. They could also teach you how to put all those local power wires under the earth. ;) :D

Glad to hear that everything turned out ok. I had to go through Hurricane Andrew and i was lucky to only get a few scraches on my car (2 trees fell in front of our house but they luckily fell and supported each other from completely toppling over. Phew.

We have friends in Ohio who have a pump in their basement. For years, parts of their basement was coated in what looked like toxic black mold. That's black mold, toxic tea. I think the whole family has some kind of brain damage from it, at least it seems like it.
