Zeus #1 Posted September 18, 2003 I just brought home from the local game store Donkey Kong Jr.. Being so proud that I got a title that not even the manager had(he didn't even want to sell it to me as he did not have that title in his massive collection, but was honourbound to do so, thus making the haul even sweeter ). Anyhow I was stoked to play this, as I already had the CV version and wanted to compare different versions. Unfortunately I was very disappointed with the 2600 gameplay. ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE! Although I kick ass at CV DKJr, I can't even get a single point on 2600DKJr! I'd like to know what other people think of this game and perhaps share tips on how to get anywhere in this most tricky version.
Godzilla #2 Posted September 18, 2003 I didn't have any trouble cycling through the boards with a little persistance back when I was ~13 (1983 or so) but I haven't really played it since then. I remember that I liked it then tho, and was so happy it had three boards. lol. amazing how little it took to make me happy back then.
joeybastard #3 Posted September 18, 2003 You need to use the VCS Pac-Man technique with it. Just make believe it's a different game and it's actually kind of fun.
Fellow Atari Man #4 Posted September 18, 2003 Heh...yeah I didn't like it either. How the hell could they NOT have any fruit?! That's just WRONG! Although I kick ass at CV DKJr, I can't even get a single point on 2600DKJr! Yeah, it took me a while before I could even make it to the second screen, and I was amazed there was a third screen on there too, but I could never make it to the top of Mario's Hideout! Being so proud that I got a title that not even the manager had(he didn't even want to sell it to me as he did not have that title in his massive collection, but was honourbound to do so, thus making the haul even sweeter ). Heh, maybe you could sell it back to him then?
Inky #5 Posted September 18, 2003 I like DKJr on the 2600.. Plus there's a bug in it on the hideout screen, that when manipulated properly can give you infinite lives.
Zeus #6 Posted September 18, 2003 Heh, maybe you could sell it back to him then? I very nearly did
sku_u #7 Posted September 18, 2003 Heh, maybe you could sell it back to him then? I very nearly did This game is better than Donkey Kong for the 2600, which isn't saying much.
Godzilla #8 Posted September 18, 2003 Well, it sure beats a railroad spike to the noggin' thats for certain!
Vic George 2K3 #9 Posted September 18, 2003 This game is better than Donkey Kong for the 2600, which isn't saying much. DKJr for the 2600 showed me how much better Donkey Kong for the same system was over what followed. One could only wonder what Coleco's programmers could have done to make DKJr for the 2600 anywhere nearly as fun as playing the arcade original. Godzilla #10 Posted September 18, 2003 I think what's amazing is that even after the huge critical beating 2600 DK took, they still kept the same 'giant lump-o-poo' look for kong in JR (I think he looks worse, actually.)
Room 34 #11 Posted September 18, 2003 Unfortunately I was very disappointed with the 2600 gameplay. ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE! I agree. Granted, I haven't given it much of a chance, since I already owned the (IMHO) EXCELLENT 7800 version of the game long before I had the 2600 version, but I personally find it almost completely impossible to control. +DamonicFury #12 Posted September 19, 2003 It's that terrible sound DK Jr makes every time he moves that makes this one unplayable for me. Makes my ears hurt just THINKING about it!
Robert M #13 Posted September 19, 2003 DK Jr for 2600 is nothing special. Here's a quick tip. - To get off a vine you must double tap the joystick in the direction you wish to get off. I had a hell of a time playing the game until I figured that out.
BassGuitari #14 Posted September 19, 2003 I think what's amazing is that even after the huge critical beating 2600 DK took, they still kept the same 'giant lump-o-poo' look for kong in JR (I think he looks worse, actually.) Kong looks even worse in the Intellivision version...he's freakin' GREEN. Some kinda mishapen frog..? Ahhh, Intellivision: great system, bad example. I've never played Froggy Kong on Colecovision, but it looks like a choice game.
Nukey Shay #15 Posted September 19, 2003 I always wondered where those flattened Froggers go
StanJr #16 Posted September 19, 2003 no fruit, and isn't the key screen in the wrong order? Ugh, this one is miserable. I've tried to like it, and I've played it a lot, but its just sad.
+kisrael #17 Posted September 19, 2003 Count me in as one of the fans. I enjoyed the hell out of it. (Hrm, I wonder if that was before or after I dressed up as DK jr for halloween?)
King Atari #18 Posted September 19, 2003 People tend to be split on this one. Either they love it or hate it. Personally, I hate it, I find it completely devoid of fun. The first Dk on the 2600 was better IMO.
+Nathan Strum #19 Posted September 19, 2003 I can't stand DKjr for the 2600. I think it's absolutely terrible. That said, I was looking through some old "wish lists" I had from back-in-the-day, of games I wanted to buy, but never did. In the back of my mind, I still wanted to buy them. I'd never played them, but had seen them in articles, ads, reviews, etc. Then Stella (the emulator) came along, and I actually got to play those games. Sure glad I never bought most of 'em. I now have no desire to waste my money on 'em, either. (Some, I'd still like to get, but the list is very short now.) Lesson learned? If I can't try it out in an emulator first, I won't even consider buying it.
