driving controllers...

Recommended Posts

Ok, I found this quite odd- I have an original Indy 500 cart, but I don't have a driving controller! I don't know how my dad bought that game and didn't get the controller! SO, Is there any wasy I can make a controller, or use another controller (i.e. paddles, joystick, Keyboard controllers) ? I know I didn't search, oh well, I wanna play this game NOW!

Sorry, but the short answer is no.

Has anyone ever made their own driving controller?

If I recall they use an optical encoder, so you SHOULD be able to gut a mouse and build your own.

I would think replacing the standard paddle pot with a 10k "infinate" pot would do the trick..

of course.. I'm probably horribly mistaken

Yes .. You are horribly mistaken!

The heart of the Indy 500 Driving Controller is a quadrature encoder (rotary switch) which just happens to physically resemble a potentiometer!

And it would be engineering masturbation to try to convert a mouse to work with Indy 500.

Just get the original! You need a pair to play against a friend ... that's when this 1977 cart gets really fun!

BTW: I suggest that the Indy 500 cart with pack-in driving controllers is the most expensive game ever sold .. for any system .. classic or modern. why? It sold for $40 in 1977 dollars! That has to be a big pile of change in today's money!

Does that mean it would be more trouble than it's worth, impossible, or hacking stuff up for the sake of hacking stuff up?

Assuming someone has the game and is having trouble finding the controllers, it could be a quick alternative.

Believe me .. there is nothing quick about hacking a mouse .. putting it in an enclosure with a knob and pushbutton on top and a controller cable out. And you gotta get all the signals right.

Plus the quadrature resolution of a mouse (about 80 per 360 turn) is much greater than that if the driving controller (16 per 360 turn).

Just go get a driving controller .. should be less than $10 .. more like $5 on eBay.

Couldn't agree more. In 1977, $40 went a long way, so my guess is that $40 then might roughly translate to around $60 or so today, give or take about $5.

In which case the 200$ package that is Steel Battalion is far more expensive.

I don't know what Steel Battalion is or is for?

But $40 in 1977 dollars would be about $130 today (guess).

XBox.

It's a mech simulator that comes with a (rather elaborate) custom controller.

Hence the 200$ price tag.

is it still 200? i figured it would have dropped at least 50 bucks by now.
As I understand it, demand for what was a rather limited supply product has bumped the price UP.

The controller is quite insane. I'd love to get it, I hear the game is really good, but I don't have $200 to drop on that..

A 60¢ dollar?  Good luck finding one of those.
Yeah.. Finding that 6/10s of a bill is HARD.
