bjybjy #1 Posted October 1, 2003 I'm not sure how it happened, but I recently had my eBay account and email accounts hacked. I didn't respond to any of the stupid spoof emails that I seem to get daily. I had different, and hard to crack passwords... but this happened to me so I thought I'd tell ya all what happened and what to watch for. Day 1: My email program doesn't work. I didn't think it was a big deal as this happens sometimes with my ISP where I'd go a day or so without email. Day 3: Still no email. Call ISP, they tell me (wrongly) that system is down. What had acutally happened was the hacker had changed by password and was forwarding my email to another account. Day 4: Hacker requests a new password to be emailed from eBay, and changes my password to something new. Day 5: Lists thousands of dollars in high-end electronics for sale with BuyItNow prices far below what they are worth. His intent was to get paid the $2K for the $10K movie cameras and stuff, then disappear. Day 6/7: Ebay figured out what was going on a day before I did and cancelled all the auctions and suspended my account. I eventually called up first my ISP and then eBay's online tech support and by verifying my personal info was able to restore my accounts, and reactivate my eBay account. I guess I was a target because my feedback is 1200, and I hadn't sold or bought anything in about a month. (I'm at college and am too busy) So anyways if this happens to you I hope you'll see the warning signs faster than I did. Tad
deathtrappomegranate #2 Posted October 1, 2003 Do you use similar passwords for different sites or services? Many people use fiendish passwords, but keep using them on different sites. This is clearly a bad idea.
