fighters were you have to keep attack buttons pressed down?

Recommended Posts

So we're playing Soul Caliber 2 on GC, and my not-particularly-graceful but not completely-strategy-free is kicking the butt of some of my one-button-at-a-time opponents. It makes me wonder, is there any fighting game where you have to hold a button and keep it pressed to follow through with an attack, or are all of 'em based on one button=fully followed-realized hits? It would seem a cool way of defeating trivial button mashing skills, could add some new elements. (I'm not much of a traditional fighter player...my all time favorite is Smash Bros followed by Power Stone...)

Well, there were moves in various Mortal Kombat games where you had to hold the button for a certain length of time before releasing it to do a move. Jax's ground pound and Mileena's sai throw come to mind (as well as some of the fatalities).

Kasumi Ninja on the Jaguar made you hold C while doing joystick motions to do the move... it actually really sucked though, since the controls weren't very good. I don't think either of these examples is quite what you're looking for though.

As cool as Soul Calibur is, sadly, it's always been a game where button mashing seemed to work better than it should. Get good at blocking an counter-attacking, and you might do better.

If you're looking for more strategic fighting games, I've heard VF4: Evolution was pretty deep... and I always thought Street Fighter 3 was pretty complicated too, what with the parrying and all.

Balrog in Street Fighter has a punch move where you hold down the punch buttons. If you hold it down long enough, it does alot of damage and is invincible, if I recall.

There are tons of Charge moves in Soul Caliber II. I'm sure each character has some. Raphael has tons of them- holding the last attack button of most of his combos makes him go into one of his stances. Another one of his attacks is- Back B, Back B, and you can charge the second Back B for a stronger attack. If it's strong enough, it will launch the opponent into the air. In fact, in some charge moves you can cancel it by pressing Guard and jump into a quick attack.

Soul Caliber II is actually a VERY complex game, although button mashing IS pretty effective. Check your character's movelist and try performing EVERY one of their moves. ;)

There are many charge-buttonmoves in the myraid of Capcom/vs/Street Fighter games. Sakura's and Mega Man's fireballs spring immediately to mind.

Balrog/Mike Bison's super punch. Hold PPP for 30 seconds to do like, 90% damage. A sweep kick can stop it, though.

Motaro from MK2... If you hold down either LP for 30 seconds, you perform an uppercut fatality with him. Punches the top half of the opponent's body off. How the fuck do you do that? Play as Shang Tsung, and hold punch all throughout the last round. When the FINISH HIM pops up, morph into Motaro without releasing the punch button, then walk up to them and let go. It's also fun to morph into Sub Zero, and deep freeze (forward, forward, down, HK) your opponent until the morph wears off, then morph into someone else and do one of their fatalities.

Yeah, I was a god in MK. So what?

You know, I noticed that right at the end, but I edited the HPs I typed into LPs I typed instead of changing his name. Maybe I shouldn't be posting on four different boards simultaneously.
