Inky #2 Posted October 7, 2003 Personally, when I do my model railroading, it's usually in HO gauge. Wait a sec... OHH.. My bad. Wrong topic.
Godzilla #3 Posted October 7, 2003 I tried an N-Gauge at dragon-con. It sucked arse. Pile-o-turd. I will get one one day, as cheaply as possible, as part of my video game collection. thats about it, really.

Godzilla #6 Posted October 7, 2003 I sucked arse. Pile-o-turd. So much could be said with this little snippet of electrons.... That'll teach me to not recharge my keyboard batteries overnight. I had no tea.... (but I fixed it in the edit, before I even read your reply.) I was thinking to myself, as I fixed it, 'I'll be amazed if no one had fun with that...' NovaXpress #7 Posted October 7, 2003 Even the mainstream press is smelling failure. http://money.cnn.com/commentary/game_over/ This is such a horrible design and execution that it's hard to beieve the makers have ever played videogames. I saw it on the shelves in Omaha last weekend, it has some huge displays right at the front of EB and such (and the front-of-store displays are not chosen by accident -- $$$). Nokia is pouring huge amounts of money into this monstrosity. Over about three hours of game shopping I seriously did not see one person other than myself even stop to look at the N-Gage. The Sage of Sega #8 Posted October 7, 2003 The mainstream consumers are actually smart with this one. Most people already know it's just a goddamn Pocket PC in sheep's clothing. Oh, and what pisses me off is that they're using the Lara Croft pics from the newest (shitty) incarnation of the franchise, even though it's only a port of the first game. Bleh. Go to hell, Nokia. liveinabin #9 Posted October 7, 2003 I played one today. The control ws just horrible, the key layout is pretty bad. Mind, I was playing Tomb Raider, so maybe that was the game. Still, the graphics were quite impressive for a handheld (PS1 standard 3D) but the experience as a whole - greatly underwhelming.

PuddWakkr #13 Posted October 8, 2003 Just saw this thing on Tech TV's Fresh Gear. They didn't bash it. It's the first positive review of it that I've seen. Well maybe not positive but the first non-negative review I've seen.
snorlaxnut #14 Posted October 8, 2003 I just saw a NGage commercial with footage of the Tomb Raider and Tony Hawk skateboard games. No thank you. I rather try to find used copies of games like those on PlayStation or PC.
rasty #15 Posted October 8, 2003 Hmm.. Nokia is pretty strong over here in Europe, and I wouldn't be surprised if the N-Gage would do, if not good, at least not too bad. People (including myself sometimes ) spend insane amounts of money on the latest mobiles, and even thou usually the smaller ones are the most successful, this one could IMHO get its share of followers among "mature" gamers (those with a job ) and/or kids who want both a mobile and a gameboy (parents could choose this combo). I don't know in the US, but kids here sometimes get their first mobile at 12 or so, and I would't be surprised if some of these will be an N-Gage. Plus it's an MP3 player: one of the first mobile/mp3 player combos (the Siemens SL45) did pretty good here, afaik. It was smaller and much nicer in design, thou. Anyway I also perfectly see the reasons why it could fail, so won't be surprised at all if it fails as well.. but I just wouldn't call it doomed yet! Personally I don't find it bad, but the fact it lacks a camera has me look somewhere else (Treo 600 (I wish!)) Regards, Rasty.-
Bez #16 Posted October 8, 2003 Call me oldfashoned, but I prefer my games on a console, and my camera on my camera and not everything I need (and not need), squeezed into one gizmo. Whatcha fink? /Bez
rasty #17 Posted October 8, 2003 Call me oldfashoned, but I prefer my games on a console, and my camera on my camera and not everything I need (and not need), squeezed into one gizmo. Whatcha fink? I totally agree that a stand alone camera is million (pixels) times better than that on an average cell phone, probably the same can be said with consoles.. But I've found myself several times wanting to snap a picture of something but not having my camera with me (most people won't be carrying a camera all the time!). Having a camera always with me, even if the quality is poor, thrills me Unfortunately the N-Gage doesn't have one Anyway, I'm still pretty curious to seeing how this hybrid will do! Regards! NovaXpress #18 Posted October 8, 2003 Long ago I read a psychological study comapring Americans to Europeans. Europeans prefer the idea of one gadget that can do it all while Americans enjoy having a larger number of gadgets with their own special purpose. Maybe we europeans have less pockets? Regards! Rasty.-
