StanJr #2 Posted October 8, 2003 Hi there! What other Gauntlet (Atari!) style games are availabe on the VCS, besides Dark Chambers and Secret Quest? Greetings, Manuel Define "Gauntlet-style???" Would Sword of Saros count?
King Atari #3 Posted October 8, 2003 Not sure. Secret Quest is closer to Zelda than Gauntlet IMO. I think the closest you'll get is Dark Chmabers. Maybe Venture is a little similar?
Godzilla #4 Posted October 8, 2003 I don't really think dark chambers even qualifies, imho there are no gauntlet style games for the 2600
Inky #5 Posted October 8, 2003 I don't really think dark chambers even qualifies, imho there are no gauntlet style games for the 2600 Dark Chambers does qualify, as it has all the elements of the arcade Gauntlet, albeit really slowed down.
Godzilla #6 Posted October 8, 2003 I don't really think dark chambers even qualifies, imho there are no gauntlet style games for the 2600 Dark Chambers does qualify, as it has all the elements of the arcade Gauntlet, albeit really slowed down. I dont think being attacked by a single sprite quite relates to gauntlet much at all, imho. Dark Chambers is more like a game 'inspired' by gauntlet. Agreed, its the closest to gauntlet you'll get on the 2600. I just don't think it's close enough to call it.
+RangerG #7 Posted October 8, 2003 I would assume Gauntlet was inspired by Dark Chambers being that DC came first. This is a good question because I love Gauntlet. Are there any games on any classic (pre-NES) systems that are "Gauntlet-like"? What's the name of the Intellivision game (Tower of Doom?) that is the third and last in the D&D series - I have never played it, but this may be one. Also, wasn't there a limited homebrew for the Colecovision (Dungeon?). I'll check my facts later at home.
Godzilla #8 Posted October 8, 2003 well, lets see. http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?letter...=G&game_id=7922 gauntlet came out in 1985... and dark chambers, while released in 1988, has an original copyright date of 1983... ? http://www.atariage.com/box_page.html?Soft...wareLabelID=122 maybe that is why the graphics aren't quite as complicated as some of the other later era atari games? http://www.atariage.com/screenshot_page.ht...peID=SCREENSHOT but its title screen says 1988 also... Anyone know the history on this? which did come first?
Cybergoth #9 Posted October 8, 2003 Hi there! Dark Chambers is more like a game 'inspired' by gauntlet. Actually, to my best knowledge, it's just the other way round Ok, as for defining what I meant with Gauntlet style, on the 2600 it probably gets reduced to "sprite running freely through a top-down dungeon, shooting everything that moves." Or in other words: Gauntlet - Robotron Berzerk: Disqualified, because it's no real dungeon. Commando: Disqualified, no free movement. Haunted House: Disqualified, no shooting. Venture: Hm... yes, that's more like it. Sword of Saros: No clue. I've never played it. The screenshots look promising though. Cybergoth #11 Posted October 8, 2003 Hi there! Are there any games on any classic (pre-NES) systems that are "Gauntlet-like"? Here's a Gauntlet-Style listing for the C64: Lemon 64 Some are non-fantasy like with Ninjas or Soldiers, some are complete crap. Closest to the original Gauntlet style and recommendable are: Gauntlet I, II & III (of course...) Druid I, II & III Demon Stalkers & Garrison Though, all of these are younger than the Gauntlet arcade... Greetings, Manuel
ZylonBane #12 Posted October 8, 2003 This is somewhat complicated-- The Gauntlet arcade game, which game out in '85, was inspired by... Dandy for the Atari 800, which came out in '83, and was then reworked and released as... Dark Chambers for the 2600/7800/XEGS in '88. Some words from the author of Dandy. Anyway, I'd consider Marauder to be somewhat Gauntlet-esque.
Gateway #13 Posted October 8, 2003 Ah, Dandy was just "dandy"! One of my favorite games back in the day! I always thought it was funny that each player had a giant number for a body! @ Manuel: Are you searching for a comparison of "Gauntlet" on the 2600 to help with your design of GTA? It will be interesting to see how many monsters you are able to include and interact with at one time in the dungeons of GTA. ( Can't think of any "Gauntlet" games off the top of my head. I'll think about it. )
Cybergoth #14 Posted October 8, 2003 Hi there! Anyway, I'd consider Marauder to be somewhat Gauntlet-esque. Cool, thanks! Greetings, Manuel
Cybergoth #15 Posted October 8, 2003 Hi there! @ Manuel: Are you searching for a comparison of "Gauntlet" on the 2600 to help with your design of GTA? Hehe, strike! Yes, I'm heavily researching all of these games currently. It gives me a good idea of what is possible, what has been done already and how it was done. For one thing I'm still uncertain, is wether the natural evolution of GTA went over Gauntlet to Diablo, or if it went rather to Zelda I'm currently rather tending to think the first. For a proof of this, you'll find that Ex-Epyx Producer Matt Householder was the producer of Diablo II as well But, well, back to the topic. So by now we have Dark Chambers, Secret Quest, Sword of Saros, Venture & Marauder. Even more? Greetings, Manuel
ZylonBane #16 Posted October 8, 2003 Uhhh.... Mines of Minos?

StanJr #18 Posted October 9, 2003 Sword Of Saros does not count: no shooting.
Cybergoth #19 Posted October 9, 2003 Hi there! Sword Of Saros does not count: no shooting. I think one can't shoot in Secret Quest either. Or in Mines of Minos. Let's make that "being able to kill stuff" for a wider variety Hm... need to download X-Man again. Seems like I deleted it for some reason... Greetings, Manuel
StanJr #20 Posted October 9, 2003 Sword of Saros still doesn't count. you can't actually kill any enemies, just ward them off and run like hell. Avoidance is the name of the game, whilst you collect the treasures and goodies. Man, I love Sword of Saros! What a great game!!! Oh well...
Cybergoth #21 Posted October 9, 2003 Hi there! Phew, Mines of Minos seems to be weird. What is it all about? I managed to collect a *bit* and bring it home twice in a row and it seems like your collecting parts of something bigger once again, like in E.T. or Aliens Return. After I got the second bit'o'something, some rather unfair blobs started chasing me. Hm... my first impression would be something like 3/10 .... any fans of this game here? Greetings, Manuel
