Bratwurst #4 Posted October 13, 2003 My favorite fighter of all time was Marvin Hagler. I thought Ali was pretty good. As for video game fighters.. well, I just like Samurai Shodown and MK II.
Gregory DG #5 Posted October 13, 2003 I'm probably too old school, but I think my favorite fighter of all time is Mortal Kombat II. I also love DOA2 and Soul Calibur, but most of these 3D fighters seem to be all flash and no substance.
Scooterb23 #6 Posted October 13, 2003 1. Street Fighter II - straight, no chaser... 2. Battle Arena Toshinden that is all Dare I say I didn't enjoy Soul Caliber all that much, and I have little interest in #2???

Primal Rage (Arcade) I haven't played enough of Soul Calibur 2 to include it in the list... and I haven't played Virtua Fighter 4 at all (although I'd love to give it a try). Frankly, I'd like the Soul Calibur series a lot more if button mashing wasn't such an effective strategy. --Zero

By the way, i'm not saying your bad at the game or whatever but with more play time you will see the intricacies of the game. Its very balanced

joeybastard #15 Posted October 13, 2003 Soul Caliber -DC Street Fighter II - SNES Does Ring King on the NES count? It was boxing not really a "fighter" like you guys are talking. Either way I loved Ring King.
Mr.FoodMonster #16 Posted October 13, 2003 No order, that would be WAY to hard _____ vs. Capcom series (gotta love the Capcom charaters!) Street Fighter Alpha 3 Guilty Gear series Tekken series DoA Series plus you have to love the original Street Fighters and Mortal Kombats
Xot #17 Posted October 13, 2003 1. Street Fighter Alpha 3. The all time king IMO. 2. Soul Calibur 3. Night Warriors: Darkstalkers' Revenge 4. Super Street Fighter II Turbo 5. Mortal Kombat II 6. King of Fighters '96 (why 96? Dunno. It's the one I played most, I guess.) I love pretty much all the Street Fighter games; also quite fond of Dead or Alive and the original Battle Arena Toshinden and MK: Deadly Alliance. The whole KOF and Darkstakers series are pretty good as well.

Ze_ro #19 Posted October 13, 2003 Yep.. any good SC player will be able to DESTROY a button masher no problemo. The design of the game is you can play initially with button mashing though. Pretty good stuff I don't know... I've thoroughly beaten the Dreamcast version (unlocking everything) twice, and it still doesn't seem like I'm any worse when I just mash buttons. When button mashers are using characters like Siegfriend and Nightmare, they have so much range that it's difficult to get in close enough to really do much. Sure, you can block and stuff, but it still seems far to easy to mash buttons. It's still a fun game, but I consider that a bit of a flaw in the game. DoA Series Am I the only one who thought this game was entirely overrated? I have the Dreamcast version of DoA2, but there's absolutely no challenge to the game... I think I beat it in about 5 minutes the first time I played it. The game has excellent graphics (although I could do without all the jiggling... it's hard to take a game seriously when they do stuff like that), I love how the stages actually interact with you, and there's a nice range of moves... but it just seems like there is no replay value whatsoever. If there were a bunch of secret characters, hidden stages, world tour/mission mode (or something similar at least), or a gallery like Soul Calibur, I think it would really help things. That stupid volleyball game destroyed whatever respect I had for the franchise too. --Zero

You need to play against some really skilled human opponents. They won't LET you get inside to strike, even when playing characters with long ranges. The game's 3D engine is designed to make those characters vulnerable to players who can sidestep effectively. The computer really doesn't do this all that much, even at high difficulty levels. I've beaten the DC version pretty much to death as well and there's a couple really good players I know that regularly hand my ass to me.
NE146 #21 Posted October 13, 2003 Yeah Ze_ro.. it sounds like you need to get going and find yourself some REAL competition. Time to graduate to the Big Leagues! Most of the best players I'd seen were resident at Golfland in Sunnyvale.. but there are groups all over the place. Heck wasn't there some Soul Calibur tournament recently? Oh, yep. Here it is: http://www.soulcalibur.com/nationals/index.php. You can bet there were no button mashers there
