joshk #1 Posted October 14, 2003 I have a chance to get a FREE Battlezone, I just have to drive and pick it up. I am told the is a problem with one of the boards, but he can't remember what it is. Does anyone know some of the common issues with the unit? Thanks

Perhaps this can help... *) Bad sockets. Very common problem on older Atari boards, specifically beneath the ROMs. Can also happen underneath the 2901's on the auxiliary board and the 6502. *) Bad 2114 RAMs. If in doubt, replace them all. After 20 years, if one original fails, the others probably aren't far behind. You don't want a boardset coming back a week later. *) Bad crystal. Sometimes it literally falls right off the board. If you can't find the 12.096 MHz type, a 12.000 MHz should work just as well. *) Bad solder joints on the cable connectors between the CPU board and auxiliary board. *) Bad PROMs on the aux board. *) Bad 2901s on the aux board. *) Bad video output circuitry on the CPU board. If the game plays blind, look at the X OUT and Y OUT test points with an X/Y oscilloscope and see if you have a bad video output. Could be just a bad op-amp. Sometimes the adjustment pots in this area have broken legs or are missing entirely. chadtower #5 Posted October 15, 2003 Hell, get it for the empty cab if for nothing else.
Cassidy Nolen #6 Posted October 15, 2003 Sounds like a no-brainer. I have seen vectors not fire up when the cap goes bad in the bottom, too. Matt knows what he is talking about. Been around a long while in this game! Cassidy
