RCmodeler #1 Posted October 17, 2003 Xenogears = A polygonal world overlaid with pre-drawn sprite characters Final Fantasy 7/9 = A pre-drawn world (background) overlaid with polygonal characters. ME: I prefer the FF7/9 look. It's more artistic with greater detailed environments to wander around in. FF7: XENOGEARS:
chrisbid #2 Posted October 17, 2003 i prefer all hand drawn, polygons on the playstation look like ass. The Dreamcast generation and beyond polygons finally look good, but this comes at the expense of any 2D gaming.
MegaManFan #3 Posted October 17, 2003 I'm a fan of both, in the right context. I think Chrono Cross was a nice merger of the two. Very beautiful pre-drawn screens, but a lot of free movement within them.
Godzilla #4 Posted October 17, 2003 i like all polygonal environments, or all drawn environments. i think the mixes dont look quite as good. I also MUCH prefer non-super-deformed characters.
Ze_ro #5 Posted October 17, 2003 I'd rather have all polygon backgrounds AND all polygon characters. Fixed backgrounds always have limitations. As far as the art styles, I dislike both of them. I'm not an anime fan though, so I guess I'm biased. I'd rather have realistic characters instead of super-deformed anime with giant eyes and gravity-defying unnaturally colored hair. --Zero
liveinabin #6 Posted October 17, 2003 Normally I'd say 'all polygon' but Xenogears had a beautiful style to it. Those blocky little sprites looked really cool.
RCmodeler #7 Posted October 18, 2003 Can the PS1 handle an "all polygon" game... both backgrounds and characters? Seems that you'd be pushing PS1 beyond what it could do. Also, looking at the all-polygon world & polygon characters of FF10, I think I still prefer FF7's artist-drawn backgrounds. FF7 had multiple level and intricate mazes to pass through while FF10 was totally flat and linear. A lot can be done with pre-drawn backgrounds. Just look at the last Resident Evil & Eternal Darkness.
Lost Monkey #8 Posted October 18, 2003 Can the PS1 handle an "all polygon" game... both backgrounds and characters? Seems that you'd be pushing PS1 beyond what it could do. It is quite likely that >80% of PS1 games are "all polygon"...
RCmodeler #9 Posted October 18, 2003 Can you name some? - Soul Edge is not. It's got a polygon arena and polygon characters but the background is just a flat picture. Ditto Dead or Alive. - The Final Fantasies are totally 2D except for the polygon characters. - Xenogears is full 3D, but the characters are flat, pre-drawn sprites. Ditto Vandal Hearts & FF Tactics. I can't think of any PS1 game that is a 100% polygon world?
liveinabin #10 Posted October 18, 2003 Tomb Raider, Gran Turismo, Jumping Flash.. Most polygon games have some kind of 'flat' backdrop, but since that itself is texture mapped onto a polygon, it's just as much a polygon as the rest of them. or something:)
Kid Fenris #11 Posted October 19, 2003 I preferred the polygon-and-sprite look of Xenogears and Grandia, as the ability to rotate your viewpoint made the 3-D surroundings more convincing than flat rendered backdrops. Of course, this may be a moot point, as the current generation of hardware has eliminated the need for backgrounds like those in Final Fantasy VII.
