MaximRecoil #1 Posted October 22, 2003 When I was a kid ('83 or '84) we borrowed an Atari 5200 for a few days and the only game I remember playing on it was Donkey Kong Jr. I remember what the graphics looked like, I remember how the controllers were really funky, I remember how it had a pause game function which I though was amazing and I remember what the cart itself looked like. I can picture the label in my mind right now, silver/grey label with a cartoon Kong on it. Anyway, I can't find anywhere that lists DK Jr. as having ever been ported to the 5200. Was it ever made or did I just dream it up?
joeybastard #2 Posted October 22, 2003 I was never ported to the 5200. You probably played the Colecovision version or one of the Atari computer versions. The CV version has a pause feature and it definetely had funky controllers so that's my guess.

Tempest #5 Posted October 22, 2003 Hmm... Sounds like you may have the 400/800 version of DK Jr. mixed up with the 5200. DK and DK jr. were never released for the 5200, although DK jr. WAS planned (although no other evidence has been found to date). Even if you somehow managed to played some prototype it still wouldn't have had a production label. The 400/800 version does have a silver/grey label, but no picture (just the title). Maybe you were thinking of the 400/800 box? Tempest

We had a cousin that occasionally brought a ColecoVision over to the house but we did definitely have that Atari 5200 for a few days too. I wonder what game it was that I played on it. I remember being impressed by the graphics and wanting to keep it (it was loaned as a try out kind of thing, if we liked it we could buy it) but my older brother, ever the voice of reason, told our parents that while it was a good system, you couldn't buy new cartridges for it anymore and persueded them not to buy it. Tempest The Atari 400/800 carts probably aren't compatible with the 5200 huh? I do realize that the machines' hardware is basically the same though. It was definitely a 5200 console that we had here. I didn't have a keyboard, was solid black with the pause button on the console itself and I'll never forget the feel of the controllers with that long-throw non-self-centering stick. I had trouble using it. This sucks, I've been telling people for years whenever we talk about old video game consoles that I played Donkey Kong Jr. on the 5200. joeybastard #9 Posted October 22, 2003 Pause on the console? Sounds like the 7800... Yup that's the kicker - the pause on the console and the 7800 had DKjr

It was before I got my Atari 2600 "Darth Vader" model in 1985 (K-Mart $35 )
