RCmodeler #1 Posted October 30, 2003 I see.... then why blame Nintendo? It's not their fault. Aren't you long overdue to go write another "best of something" post? Okay. What is the best marketing campaign(s) ever by a gaming company? . . . HERE are my choices: (1) Zelda Collection/GameCube bundle - pure genius (2) Porting Space Invaders to the 2600 - This brilliant marketing move literally sold millions of Ataris and saved the console from near-death. (3) NES Exclusive Licences - Call it "unfair practices" if you wish, but Nintendo's decision to sign developers to exclusively develop for their NES console left the competition with very little software... thereby making the NES the one to own for the most games. PuddWakkr #2 Posted October 30, 2003 What I only get your three choices to choose from? I think MMF was kidding about another one of your best of threads
eldunko #3 Posted October 30, 2003 The Zelda/Gamecube seems to me as being the only think remote to marketing... Like nintedo's 'Change the System', or 'Play it Loud' would be an example of a marketing campaign in my books. How is porting Space Invaders an example of a 'Marketing Campaign' or even Nintendo's policy regarding third-parties?
somePUNK #4 Posted October 30, 2003 its ture i think you mean what was the bisuness stragy or bisuness decision

+kisrael #7 Posted October 30, 2003 I don't think he was presenting three voting choices, just three ideas... Personally I don't think the Zelda Bundle is that big of a deal. It appears to non-casual gamers (or casual gamers with long memories) who don't know a lot about emulation only. In terms of marketting, I really like the "Sega Scream" tagline, the way it created a common thread accross a whole slew of games.
liveinabin #8 Posted October 30, 2003 I liked Sega's early European Dreamcast marketing strategy. 'Up to 6 billion players' when at the time it was really only 'Up to 4 players, if you're in the same room'
chrisbid #9 Posted October 30, 2003 The Sega Scream/Welcome to the Next Level really made Sega a household name in the early 90's
liquid_sky #10 Posted October 30, 2003 the electrictroy make a best of do you like or dislike thread and never learn anything more was always funny
Brad2600 #11 Posted October 31, 2003 I think RCModeler gets a kick out of these types of threads. He never has to make a contribution. This explains it all.
Ze_ro #12 Posted October 31, 2003 I'd have to say that Acclaims idea to advertise on gravestones was a great idea. Pure class. --Zero
MegaManFan #13 Posted October 31, 2003 And you have to love "John Romero is gonna make you his bitch." That's a winner.
Lost Monkey #14 Posted October 31, 2003 Atari Jaguar: "The Cave" infomercial. BEST! - MARKETING! - EVAR!
moycon #15 Posted October 31, 2003 hey makes a very valiad point that games sucked Indeed they did, and people still bought the crappy Swordquest games...why??? Marketing my friend...marketing. I was all consumed with that contest back in the day. I think we played that POS game til 4am the day my buddy got it!!!
RCmodeler #16 Posted October 31, 2003 Atari Jaguar: "The Cave" infomercial. BEST! - MARKETING! - EVAR! Is that on the web somewhere? I'd like to watch it.
oesii #17 Posted October 31, 2003 Atari Jaguar: "The Cave" infomercial. BEST! - MARKETING! - EVAR! Is that on the web somewhere? I'd like to watch it. It used to be but I haven't seen it in awhile. It's a 30 mintue long infomercial so it's a huge file that's not easy to host. About the only way to watch it these days is through a JagCD and by buying the JagAds CD from Songbird. Nukey Shay #18 Posted October 31, 2003 Conquistador Instant Coffee's marketing stategy of including a free dead dog. Oops...wrong thread
compacho #19 Posted November 2, 2003 I gotta say i loved nintendo's commercial for Zelda: Ocarina of Time. That thing gave me goosebumps. I also like the Metroid Prime commercial. Very well done.
MegaManFan #20 Posted November 2, 2003 The Golden Sun ad is funny as hell. "I thought you were going to summon some WIND!"
Ranthulfr #21 Posted November 8, 2003 The Intellivision comparison ads featuring George Plimpton seem to be well remembered even today. And the 'Get N or Get Out' Nintendo line was clever.
DriftChamp #22 Posted November 8, 2003 I'd say it was The Wizard movie, which was basically a 100 minute commercial for Nintendo and Super Mario Bros 3.
DriftChamp #23 Posted November 8, 2003 HERE are my choices: (1) Zelda Collection/GameCube bundle - pure genius I also think the Zelda bundle is a great idea, but it's a little too early to tell how successful that marketing idea will be. Anyone remember when Nintendo game away copies of Dragon Warrior for suscribing to Nintendo Power back in the day? Another good marketing gimmick by Nintendo was with Zelda The Wind Waker. I never pre-order games. I did with Wind Waker though, just to get the Ocarina of Time Disc. In terms of commercials for marketing campaigns, my favorite one is: The old SMB3 commerical where everyone is chanting "Mario, Mario" and then they zoom out to a view of the earth with Mario's face formed by all the people. Starscream #24 Posted November 9, 2003 (1) Zelda Collection/GameCube bundle - pure genius Gotta disagree here. Pimping your most advanced system to date with games that were played 15 yrs ago only appeals to collectors and loyalists. Wanna entice someone to rush out and buy what ya got, ya have to do better than showing off the capabilities of your old systems.
bergbros2 #25 Posted November 9, 2003 The Sega scream has endured better than the company itself so that would be the best ad campaign. It gave the company a certain edge. I think the best but short lived ad was a British Ad for Command and Conquer. It showed pictures of Hitler, Stalin and Mao Tse Tung with the caption "Previous High Scores". Sick but brilliant. It was pulled soon after it came out. However, the best campaign was the first extensive use of Shareware with Doom. It sucked everone in and became the model for games that came after it.
