Has anyone beaten Shadow Of The Beast?

Recommended Posts

I own the Amiga version of Shadow of the Beast, and also the Lynx version. I've never tried the Genesis or TurboDuo versions. Has anyone beaten this thing? I could never get very far in this game at all. But I kept going back to it because the fantastic graphics, sound, animation, and music. Everything about the game oozed quality. But the difficulty is so high that it's damn near unplayable. Has anyone beaten this game?

I think the amiga version may be the hardest to beat. I have finished it but only when using a trainer.

Oh yeah!!! Awesome game!

And no TRAINERS!!!!!

On the Amiga.

Of course, I was wearing the SoTB TShirt (That came in the box with the game) at the time.

That was a hard game, but I had no life back then...

Wasn't it SoTB II that had a few spots you could get stuck in? No bad guys to kill you, but you couldn't get out, so you had to restart, as in reboot??? Or was that SoTBIII? I hated that. I can't remember if I finished II or III, but I know I finished 1.

That and Dragon's Lair are the only games I actually remember finishing..

(Well, there was the C64 version of Dragon's Lair, but I used an Action Replay (???) cart to save state with full lives just before the last level for a friend, so I consider that an 'interrupted' game. I only played it all the way thru from the saved state.)

Oh wait.. I made it all the way thru Vanguard once in the Arcades.. Cost me like $15... Damn continue feature.. :-)

Theres a fine version available for the Lynx, however i'll always consider it to be an Amiga game.

Friend of mine can beat the Lynx version every time he plays it. He's just a natural on that game. Myself, I never get past the stage with the rolling barrels... :(

I remember when this game first came out. All the Amiga owners were raving about the "parallax scrolling" and the beautiful graphics. Well, they were right. It WAS one of the most beautiful games of the 16-bit era.

But when I actually got the game, and started playing it, I quickly got bored. I didn't enjoy the game at all.

I still rave about it! :-)

And have fun playing it.. I enjoy it alot...

I do have to admit not being able to enjoy "Agony" tho.

(That's a weird sentence. :^)

It was a beautiful game. Maybe their most striking game to watch..

But the gameplay never hooked me.

And I love Dragon's Lair!! ;-) To put me in perspective for Graphics and Gameplay.

Aha! So I'm not insane. I never realized there were 16-bit versions of this game. The 8-bit one's pretty cool. :D

I beat the somewhat lackluster Genesis version, but only after careful study of the level design and enemy placement. I had that game memorized by the time I finished it... it's the only way you can anticipate enemies. Often times, you'll need to be ready to punch BEFORE you see them coming, because by the time they're on the screen it's too late to counter their attacks.

There was a version of Shadow of the Beast on the Commodore 64? Yikes! I can't imagine what it must look like. Any links to screenshots?

I can't get the pictures to open. The box cover opened in a javascript pop-up window, but the screenshots won't.....

The screenshots appear in the space to the left of where you click the thumbnails.

No, Javascript is on. Like I said, when I click on the cover art, a javascript window pops open with the picture in it.

I can only think to clear your files cache then, in case you have that IE bug doing the rounds that seems to prevent this sort of code working...

I'm using Netscape 7.1 right now. I can't try out any other browsers, as i've just upgraded to Mac OS X 10.3, and for some reason, it's killed my other browsers, including Apple's Safari. Oh well, I give up.

Yeah, that's a trademark of pretty much all of Psygnosis' Amiga games... they all have amazing graphics (often with a Giger-esque theme), but are so damn hard that you give up part way through.

Actually, I just remembered something...

I can't remember what happened exactly, but when I finally finished SOTB, I seem to remember it was just a screen and some music. I think I was expecting some more kual animation like the Intro, and I got a picture and maybe some scrolling text.. Kind of anti-climactic actually...

Dang.. Now I have to play it again to see what it was. :-)

Psygnosis hired a lot of great graphics designers back then. All their games had a style that elevated them above every other software house then (and even now). I played a lot of those games just to hear the incredible music! I always loved the music from Blood Money, even if the levels each took a fucking hour to get through, if you actually survived that long. Stuff like the music and intro animation to Leander blew my mind. I only had a demo of Agony, and it was kind of glitchy on my machine, but it looked incredible. Psygnosis needs to go back to those days and re-establish themselves as the most graphically stylish game company around.

By the way, one of their graphic designers went on to do a great CD-ROM graphic novel called Sinkha. I bought it years ago, and it was cool as hell. They're coming out with a sequel that looks even better. Check it out. http://www.downloadsinkha.com/default.htm
