StanJr #1 Posted November 3, 2003 It seems we are experiencing a Final Fantasy blitz. This stuff is everywhere. From sequels (a BIG Final Fantasy no-no), to Crystal Chronicles and Tactics, to XI, Final Fantasy is just overwhelming. And to be honest, its making me very sick of a franchise I used to really love. There is too much of a good thing. I don't even care if these are the greatest games ever (are they?), its just too much. One game every couple of years was a good thing. Its a "per-units-sold" commodity not a great, complex involved game anymore. Now it just feels overdone, overexposed, overmarketed and just plain over. Anybody else of all the Final Fantasy going around?
RCmodeler #2 Posted November 3, 2003 Let's see... In 1998(?) there were three games released: FF Tactics, Legends, and 8. In 2003, we are getting four: FF10-2, 11, Crystal Chronicles, and Tactics Advance. So really, nothing's changed. Square's milking the franchise just like they always have. chrisbid #3 Posted November 3, 2003 ill probably play X2, but 11 looks too expensive, and the cube game looks to be more fun with multiplayer, and my lack of game playing friends will keep me from playing it.
Video #4 Posted November 3, 2003 You can thank Sony for ruining Final Fantasy. Back in the early 90's, they did everything on cart, a lot of time was devoted just to figuring how to make it fit. Now everything's on CD/DVD format, no more problem. So they release 2-3 games a year with the Final Fantasy franchise behind it, and really ruined the series. Truthfully, IMO, Discs ruined the series, but some people like the polygonal choppy graphics of the PSX. I've stayed away from the series since 7, which I was dissappointed in. Think Halo would be popular if we were already up to our eighth game? Hell No.
Rhindle The Red #5 Posted November 3, 2003 I, for one, could never stand the "Final Fantasy" series. That being said, I'm actually looking forward to eventually getting Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, since friends who know my tastes in RPGs say I'll like it. Of course I've got to finish Pokemon: Ruby and Pokemon: Sapphire first.
Ze_ro #6 Posted November 3, 2003 If Square just suddenly folded and no more Final Fantasy games were ever made, I would actually be quite happy. --Zero
mos6507 #7 Posted November 3, 2003 Square typifies the evils of an unrestrained videogame company. They push the envelope in movie-like graphics for its own sake, and they spare no expense. THey don't know when to stop. They don't really know what games are supposed to be anymore. They just see them as interactive movies. I can't think of any game company other than maybe Origin circa Wing Commaner III that has been more responsible for pushing videogames to the brink of being the next Hollywood, and I mean that in a bad way. Paralistalon #8 Posted November 3, 2003 Now it's Square Enix. Just something to keep in mind. I've missed out on all the PS Final Fantasies after 7, and seeing as how I don't have a PS anymore, I'm glad they're releasing a couple FF games on Nintendo systems. Final Fantasy Tactics Advance is one of those games that consumes you with it's deep character customization. I'm nearing the end of the game, and I have around 65 hours logged so far. Since my PS died before all these cinematic RPGs came out, I've been wanting to play one. They break up the monotony of classic combat-centered RPGs and shift the emphasis to the story. I'm happy of this shift because being the RPG fan that I am, I'll be the first to admit that combat can get old fast. In fact, my biggest pet peeve in an RPG is when there's not enough story to reward me for wading through tons of repetitive combat.
Raijin Z #9 Posted November 3, 2003 Final Fantasy is more of a brand than a franchise. I mean, shit, the first bona-fide sequels in the "series" are still in development.
JB #10 Posted November 4, 2003 Final Fantasy is more of a brand than a franchise. I mean, shit, the first bona-fide sequels in the "series" are still in development.Unless you count the 4-episode anime series Legend of the Crystals, which was a sequel to FF5.... It also sucked, but htat's another story.
MegaManFan #11 Posted November 4, 2003 I've considered buying the FF Unlimited box set, if only because I downloaded a few of the episodes and found them amusing.
RCmodeler #12 Posted November 4, 2003 Final Fantasy is more of a brand than a franchise. I mean, shit, the first bona-fide sequels in the "series" are still in development. (confused) Final Fantasy 10-2 was released almost a year ago (Japan). It's not still under development.
+Cafeman #13 Posted November 4, 2003 I never played a Final Fantasy game. Not ever. Other than FF7 which my brother in law had (he liked it, the many battle FMVs bored me). I really don't like RPG's at all though -- the only ones I've played were Skies of Arcadia and the Shining Force games. ANYWAY, I have always wondered about the allure of FF. I just don't get its popularity.
RCmodeler #14 Posted November 5, 2003 It's the interactive story. It's kinda like watching a movie (or reading a book) except that YOU are the main character.
smile_walle #15 Posted November 5, 2003 I would have agreed with StanJr, saying that too much FF's libary for a long time (never stopped!!) just keep going, keep going, never ending! However, some of FF was the best games, but my vote is FF 7 and 9 is the best, but a least is 8 and 10. For the older version under NES is FF 1 and 2 is the best games as well. Is that correct?
