Mock #1 Posted November 7, 2003 How far have you guys made it in Gyruss? It kicks my ass. I get to like Saturn and thats it... Jupiter, Mars, and Earth are left...
birdie3 #2 Posted November 7, 2003 Which version? I really only like the C64 version. I can only get as far as Saturn as well.
RMila75 #3 Posted November 7, 2003 Yeah, Saturn is where it usually decides I've had enough. This is one of my all-time favorite games, mostly because of the nostalgia involved when I think back to the summer of 1984, walking into the Aladdin's Castle at the mall, hearing the Gyruss music playing louder than most of the other games. I can still feel the ice cold A/C in that place and I can even remember the smell in there. Those were great days and great games. Have you tried the version on Konami Arcade Advanced on GBA? Using the konami code gives you a sort of Gyruss "remix" that is REALLY hard.
+Cafeman #4 Posted November 7, 2003 I play the one on Konami Classics on PSX. It's pretty much arcade perfect. I have never reached Earth but I've gotten to within 1 wave of it. Tough! I seem to remember getting to Earth one time back in the day, at the arcade though. I don't know why I can't do it again, even after a few practice rounds. I guess I just suck at it. RMila75 #5 Posted November 7, 2003 I've cheated my way to Earth, don't remember if it was on konami classics or MAME. Nothing at all happens, you just go back to the start of the game.
Bivotar #6 Posted November 7, 2003 While not extremely faithful to the arcade version, the NES version was a pretty cool twist on Gyruss. It was put out by Konami (under the Ultra Games name). It had a few different power-ups and lots of different enemies. Plus it had bosses at the end of each planet stage. There was some way to get either infinite or many ships, so it was pretty easy to get through all the planets on the NES version (if you cheated that is). The original rocks though. I can still hear that pounding music in my head!
Tempest #7 Posted November 7, 2003 I don't know why, but I prefer the 2600 version to all others. Maybe it's because I grew up with it. At the AGE I got to within 2 waves of Earth on the arcade unit they had there. I was so in the zone for most of that game. Tempest
Raijin Z #8 Posted November 7, 2003 Earth, at Nancy's Cosy Cafe in Kinsman, Ohio. Do not go to Kinsman unless you're a member of the aryan brotherhood, though. You won't have a pleasant time otherwise.
RMila75 #9 Posted November 7, 2003 Do not go to Kinsman unless you're a member of the aryan brotherhood, though. In other words, you made it to the "Fatherland" in Aryan Gyruss. Or maybe that's a bit offensive. ah well...
Raijin Z #10 Posted November 7, 2003 It's pretty hard to offend me. Hell, just yesterday I told someone togo take a gas shower and dry off in the oven.
Mock #11 Posted November 8, 2003 well, I started playing when I got home last night and after 5 straight games, I racked up 139,850 points and missed earth by 1 stage...I got killed right at the start of the last stage before Earth...dman it I was so close and only a few points away from another bonus ship! I was on level 22 or 23 or something like that...it was 6am and I was sleepy...lol. I have figured out the key to just getting through the waves from planet to planet is to not go after the ships as they come out...if you just shoot at a couple on the edges and then move around the circle and kill off the ships that are not moving, you can skip through the levels quickly. By doing this you don't score a lot of points, but you move from planet to plaent and I was just trying to reach Earth...lol. Also, once you get the double fire, don't even go after the 3 spinning jack looking objects... The main idea is to minimize your time in high risk zones and maximize your time killing off non moving ships....lol. I was playing on the GBA with no cheat codes or anything like that...it's a pretty true and tight version of the arcade game. I'll get to Earth soon.... +Cobra Kai #12 Posted November 8, 2003 I love the 5200 version. It really shows off the systems audio capabilities. I've gotten to MARS on the 5200, using a Competition Pro joystick. I've been wanting to see what happens at the end, but if what others here say is true of other versions, nothing happens ...oh well, it will be cool to see what Earth looks like anyway. Markimus of K. #13 Posted November 9, 2003 Ahhh Gyruss, my all time fave arcade game! I just got to earth a week ago (the very first time) on the Commodore. I had just finished listening to Bach's Tocatta in D minor (the music from the game) and started playing. I got to level 32 (earth is stage 24) with 304,000 something points. I was very impressed with myself! I used a sega arcade stick and I really think that helped as well as the inspirational music. Markimus of Gyruss. PS: am getting the GBA version shortly, will post thoughts. PSS: the Gyruss manual (Commodore) says you can pause the game with F7, I tried it on my C64 & 128. Does anyone know if they did indeed implement a pause feature or not? (It's the cart version)
birdie3 #14 Posted November 9, 2003 Yes. It (pause) works on my C64 perfectly. There is also a two player mode as well as a reset feature. Does it not work on your system?
ubersaurus #15 Posted November 9, 2003 I've gotten to mars on the 2600 one and to saturn on the konami arcade collection for gba. Hard game.
Markimus of K. #16 Posted November 9, 2003 Yes. It (pause) works on my C64 perfectly. There is also a two player mode as well as a reset feature. Does it not work on your system? I can get the 2 player mode and reset ok, put there is just no way it will pause. Are you using the disk version or cart? Markimus of K.
RJ #17 Posted November 9, 2003 Atari 800XL version- 773,550 Stage 70 Got to Earth at least 3x. BEAT IT!
Mayhem #18 Posted November 9, 2003 Been round 3 times on the arcade, a lot more on the C64 conversion (cart only - disc version would be a hack copy).
Gamemaster_ca_2003 #19 Posted November 10, 2003 I made it to stage 7 and scored over 100000 pts on the NES vetrsion.
Mock #20 Posted November 13, 2003 well, last night I picked up the GBA and gave it another shot...first time through I hit 179,000+ points and got down to 2 ships before earth on the last stage. If I had just killed 2 more stinkin' ships and I could have made it to the promised land....fuggers! i'll give it another shot in a couple of days I guess... Earth awaits... birdie3 #21 Posted November 13, 2003 Cartridge!!
Markimus of K. #22 Posted November 13, 2003 Cartridge!! Ok, I just figured out the Commodore cart Pause problem (if anyone cares). The pause (F7) will not work if using a genesis pad or stick. I plugged in a standard Atari joystick into the C128 and the pause feature now works. Go figure... Markimus of Gyruss.
Mock #23 Posted November 17, 2003 Still I'm up over 200,000 and still no friggin' Earth trip for the Mock-meister. damn.
birdie3 #24 Posted November 21, 2003 No.... I play Gyruss with my Genesis pad and all is fine with F7. Strange but spam.
AtariDude #25 Posted November 22, 2003 How far have you guys made it in Gyruss? It kicks my ass. I get to like Saturn and thats it... Jupiter, Mars, and Earth are left... I have the one for Konami's classics for the GBA. I have made it to Earth a few times. The trick is to hold on to the double shoot for as long as you possibly can. If I can do that, I could last for a lot of boards.
