sku_u #27 Posted November 8, 2003 The Atari 5200. It reminds me of the older Bang & Oluffson CD players. Very sleek.

Nateo #31 Posted November 8, 2003 I like the look of just about any system with phony wood on it. Other than that tho, I've always really liked the way the ColecoVision looked. It just gives off this sense of power..... As for ugly lookin crap-for-craps: Xbox / PS2 - sorry. these do NOT look like vg systems. They look like freakin stereo componets! Intellivision System III - it's just not pretty. No woodgrain! N64 - yeah, now that I think about it, this WAS an ugly console. Game Boy (orginial) - I dunno bout this one. Just never really liked the way it looked.
Video #32 Posted November 8, 2003 I love simple streight lines. That being said, I can't stand Box shaped systems. I loved the design of the 5200, and 7800, and I also loved the Sega Master System. It's close betwenn 5200 and MS though. Couldn't stand NES's shape, that's why I picked Maste System. Though I love the New Nes (toploader) Didn't really like any of the 16 bit era systems, so I'll go with Jag for that, and 32+, I'd say the N 64, kind of mysteriousness about it's funky design just draws me to it. Would have looked awesome on a 64DD though, as that would have enphasized it's piller style feet much more. Best looking modern system I'd say is X-Box, I like the grillwork on the PS2, but it's just to square other than that, and GC is just a box. Of all time though, I'd probably say 5200 for first party Though MasterSystem is close behind, very close.
Ze_ro #33 Posted November 8, 2003 8.) 3DO M2 Accellerator, Graphite Pre-Production Unit Do you mean this one? I was always under the impression that that was just a preliminary thing, and that they'd have done something a lot different for the final release. ..and the least desirable looking systems, IMHO would have to be: 1.) Arcadia 2001, Fairchild Channel-F, anything else Pre-2600 I actually like the look of the original Odyssey system... but otherwise, I'd agree. --Zero
Jasoco #34 Posted November 8, 2003 Let's see. I can't choose. (From here on, I am referring to US released console designs.) The Game Cube is a nice, though plain looking console. It's squared, and when coupled with a Game Boy Player, it's an exact cube. (I sometimes wish for space sake that they had made it tray loading and flatter.) The Dreamcast has some neat curves and cool straight edges. The NES vs. the Sega Master System is a tight race. I say the SMS wins that one. I LIKE the retro-futuristic look, but I too have wondered about the queer flow-chart on the front as well.. The Jaguar.. looks like a toilet. Sorry to say it. And to me, the system feels.. cheap. Very cheaply made. (Don't tell the Jaguar Forum dwellers.) The system and the controllers. Especially the controllers. They're so light and feel very empty. Just like my 2600. The Genesis 2/CD 2 combo have a unique look, but the Genesis 1/CD 1 combo beats them as my favorite look. The Genesis 3 is a nice compact look. As is the CDX. But the JVC X'eye catches my eye better and looks pretty attractive in my book. The SNES 2 looks nicer than the SNES 1 IMHO. And the NES 2 looks nicer than the NES 1 as well. The PSOne is small and compact and pretty neat looking compared to its older brother. I'm not a big fan of the PS2 look, but I do like that it's flat and more stackable, but it's too damn shallow. Not enough space from the back to the front. As for portables, the GBA SP is the winner here. It's very hip and now. Folding, compact, simple and elegant. In fact, the original GBA makes me cringe compared to it. Maybe it's just the lack of a lit screen that really gets me. GBA SP Flame. That's the one for me. The original GB was big and bulky, but had a retro 80's look. The Pocket looked sleeker and wins over the original, but the Color wins over the Pocket just because it's color. The Game Gear has some nice curves and the Nomad has a unique Wedge feel to it. The original Lynx was really long, but they improved it with the remake. Looks cool, but not that cool. I can't choose a favorite look. They all are unique. I like a lot of things. I have many tastes. I like the look of just about every console. Don't make me choose. SteveW #35 Posted November 8, 2003 Best looking consoles: Atari 2600jr. - small and sleek Atari 7800 - I've always liked it's angular look and sleek lines Odyssey2 - Great looking silver console (until you saw the ugly controllers next to it) Intellivision 2 - compact, elegant design Atari Lynx Rev. 2 - smaller and cooler than first version Pioneer LaserActive - looks so good racked in with my Pioneer stereo system Atari Jaguar - looks like a spaceship (until you attach the CD drive) Samsung N501 Nuon DVD player - sweet diagonal mirrored machine Worst looking consoles: Atari 5200 - gargantuan machine, needed shrinking down Xbox - big, heavy, case design by marketing team instead of design artists GameCube - dull Dreamcast swipe TurboGraphix - with CD drive, it looked awkward and clunky Those are just standouts from my own collection. I've seen a Fairchild Channel F (which was butt-ugly), but I don't own one, so I didn't count it.
ozyr #36 Posted November 8, 2003 Here's my list, for what it counts (in order)... Atari Lynx - Rev 1 (just love the size and looks) Atair Jaguar Odyssey2 (sorry, just think the thing looks cool) Atari 5200 GameCube
moycon #37 Posted November 8, 2003 Atari Jaguar Although I rarely fire it up anymore, I always thought it was the coolest looking console. Hmmm I might have to hook that sucker up this week-end.

Ferris #39 Posted November 8, 2003 8.) 3DO M2 Accellerator, Graphite Pre-Production Unit Do you mean this one? I was always under the impression that that was just a preliminary thing, and that they'd have done something a lot different for the final release.--Zero No not that one. There was another case design that they did that in my opinion was really sleek. I'd love an M2, even if it was a development system. It's a shame it never came out. Ze_ro #40 Posted November 8, 2003 Anyone ever seen the PC-Engine Shuttle? I think it's just a redesigned PC-Engine, but it certainly looks a lot like a Jaguar, but with almost a spaceship theme to it. Unfortunately, this was the best picture I could find of it: --Zero

liveinabin #44 Posted November 8, 2003 Best Looking: Gamecube - looks SO friendly, like a toy, which is great as, of course, it is one. Playstation (original) - Loved the circles on it, and the pale colour. It had a quiet sense of power about it. Gameboy Color - the best proportioned gameboy, the look just makes you want to hold the damn thing. lovely. Atari 2600 woodgrain - no comment needed Worst Looking: Sony PS2 - Oh no! My Sinclair Spectrum 128 is having sex with my radiator! Think of the children!!! Xbox - The overall design isn't bad. Obviously not a japanese console. Classic US design (big = powerful) but let down by really shitty plastic which, in a box this size, looks REALLY cheap. Genesis / Megadrive - crappy looking switches and an overall design that screams "I wish we could really have had some kind of CD-ROM in this big round bit". Looks like a pirated Chinese machine. compacho #45 Posted November 8, 2003 I can't believe how many people put gamecube as the best looking. Its a total knock-off of apple's powercube(I think thats the name). You know I'm right about that. Its not a bad design but c'mon, it's also purple. They should have released it as blue. But since purple means royalty over in japan then i guess that's why the used it. Its overall size is definately a plus though. As for the xbox, c'mon people! How predictable is that design. Looks like a third grader designed it. Now the ps2. When you look at the PS (original) then look at the ps2, the transition of the design is very radical. When its stood up it looks amazing. Jasoco #46 Posted November 8, 2003 "Power Mac G4 Cube". Do some research. Ind it's not a rip off. I mean, the G4 Cube was an homage to the NeXT Cube anyway. And that was only because Steve ran the company that made the cube in the first place. But really, the Game Cube I don't believe is a knock-off. Things can be shaped whatever they want. The GCN doesn't resemble a G4 Cube in any way. Aside from being square, but so are building blocks, sugar cubes and cheese cubes.
Ze_ro #47 Posted November 9, 2003 If all they have in common is the fact that they're cubes, then I'd say it's just a coincidence. And although I hate to sound like a smart-ass, the Gamecube isn't really even a cube... it's too short. Add a GB Player in there, and it'll make up for the height though. And the cube is available in other colors than purple. Black and Platinum seem pretty popular around here... and Japan has all kinds of goofy colors like "Spice". --Zero

A Player makes it a perfect square cube. If only it were one piece. And the cube is available in other colors than purple. Black and Platinum seem pretty popular around here... and Japan has all kinds of goofy colors like "Spice".Why can't the US have Spice? I LOVE orange! It'd really stand out. All my consoles are black or greyish. And I didn't like the Indigo one. So I took Jet. I'd love it to be spice though.
