Atari Karts

Recommended Posts

I LOVE this game :D

Just unlocked the miracle trophy and Pum King, he rules...

Damnit, why is this game so much fun?! Never played a racing game with so much stuff to do to complete it before; great stuff :)

That is all ;)

I don't know, I prefer it when you have to decide who to use on how good they are rather than WHO they are...besides, there weren't really any Jag-specific characters they could use without huge licensing issues. Unless they included Trevor McFur ;) :D

Wonderful stuff :)

Or they could have included Skylar as a driver. Hearing that sexy voice saying "Out of my way" would have made this game a best seller with no one caring about Mario Kart!! :D

Hmm. I love Mario Karts, and I want this game. But befor I go and plunk down $100 for it, I just gotta ask. Is it worth it?

I don't care about characture recognition, I mean, does it in general play the same, look the same (I assume the Jag version is run on ascrolling bitmap like Mario Karts SNES game) Overly hard/easy? Extra features? And how many players, both in the game, and humans playing simultanious?

Thanks for any help.

You shouldn't have to plunk down $100 for it. It's been on e-bay quite a bit shrinkwrapped for $39.00 Buy It Now. Someone has a large lot of 'em.

Ah yes, Atari Karts. I bought the game off eBay for $51 on Feb 1, 2002. (Yeah, I have an Excel worksheet...what's it to ya? ;) ) I played it for a few days, and it pissed me off so badly that I ran upstairs and posted it for sale on eBay.

Then, after I calmed down, I decided that I'd best play it as much as possible before I sold it. I played it for a week straight and beat the game. I then realized how much I enjoyed the game, and wished I hadn't sold it. But I sold it for $56, ended up making a buck profit. Sometimes, tho, that's not such a bad thing. I have games in my collection that I've never gotten around to playing. At least this way, I was forced to play it and now I know I like it.

So, I owned the game for 17 days in all and it's one I'll buy again someday. Parts of it are rather frustrating. Certain tracks that stop ya dead and those annoying things on the track that ya run over. They're too flat on the track, so they can be hard to distinguish until you're right on top of them.

But all rashness aside, I'd say it's a good game that will end up in my collection again someday.

(Sometimes, I think I need to take an anger management class. Nothing can get me more PO'd than a video game. I just broke a PS2 controller last night playing the new Smackdown game. But ya shouldn't be able to hit a guy in the head with a chair 20 times in a row and still have him beat ya. :x :D Thanks for letting me share. TMI, probably... Heh.)

Like Jay said, it won't cost you $100. And yes :)

I don't care about characture recognition, I mean, does it in general play the same, look the same (I assume the Jag version is run on ascrolling bitmap like Mario Karts SNES game)

The main difference over Mario Kart is that the 'scrolling bitmap' is draped over a 3D terrain. More noticeable in some tracks than others (the 'palace' tracks are completely flat) but there are definite hills/undulations in the tracks on the others. Allows you to jump over corners in some places when you get good ;) Looks quite a minor graphical effect but actually reflects a huge amount of calculation the game's doing behind the scenes, and still maintaining a VERY smooth framerate.

Overly hard/easy?  Extra features?  And how many players, both in the game, and humans playing simultanious?

I'd say it's overly easy at the beginning and overly hard at the end :D

Not seen any difficulty settings, not sure if there actually are any? You're forced to get better as you progress through the game though, because some of the stages (especially the Miracle Races) are incredibly difficult when you first try them.

7 players at once when you race against the CPU, just 2 when you race 2-player.

Hope that helped :)

Ah yes, Atari Karts.

Haha, that was a great story about your Atari Karts journey. I got mine from that guy in Belgium who has at least 100 of these, new and sealed for $40. I've played it about three times this year and have enjoyed it, I'll come back to it soon and it's a fun game to show non-Jag people because of it's similarity to Mario Kart.

Wow, really? I could have sworn this game was around $100, the reason I stayed away from it. $50 isn't so bad IMO.

Cool, they got kind of a ...hmm....voxel effect to the playing field or something eh? That sounds cool, like GT Advance 2 maybe, but sounds more extreme from the way you talk of it.

Anyhow, thanks for the help. I'm definately going to get this now, I think I may have the money now even. I'll definately look for boxed sets though.

AK was the only Jag game my wife would play and enjoyed - It is a fun game unless you wore out your SNES pad on Mario Carts - if you havent its a fun game to play.

I like the Pumpkin guy ;)

The castle map is a bit too sticky :P

The guy that has a bunch of them, just raised his price. Maybe he is getting low on them, $60.00 a piece and he is only offering 4 for sale, well 3 now as I bought one.

Heh..I played this game some more yesterday and indeed it is quite fun. I also just unlocked pum king. That red reverse controls icon is just plain evil. I have gotten the hang of using backwards controls but it's hard to judge exactly when the controls are gonna switch back to normal. Also those puddles piss me off too. They sling you around 180 degrees sometimes right into one of the super glue walls. But It's nice sometimes for a game to be more of a challenge than a walk in the park.

Btw I also got my Atari Karts NIB from that guy in Belgium early this year for $39.99 :D He's raised it $20 since then....maybe he's running out?

I remember there being a TON of 'reverse' icons in Pum King's Miracle Race, but I never hit any of them...my trick is to pick up a 'steering bonus' and just keep it (don't activate it with 'C') - then you can't pick up anything on the track 8)

I beat Pum King first time...was just on a high from finishing the Tempest race in 1st I guess :D
