The best "Big Box" Playstation game

Recommended Posts

What is the best early playstation game? (In the big box, like jumping flash)

I have been addicted to Gunship for a while and was wondering what other early playstation games were good.

Resident Evil (though I don't own the big box version)

I could've bought the big box version of Battle Arena Toshinden the other day for $5, but passed.

All the UK games are big box (by that I assume you mean the larger non-standard CD case?), which is the same as with Dreamcast and NGPC (we get the clamshell mini-AES style cases). I guess in the UK we just get cooler packageing for games.

But I thought that probably Tomb Raider was one of the best early titles, although it did come out on Saturn first...

I'm partial to the original "Ridge Racer"... but my first choice has been, and always will be "res. evil"...

An Atarinvader post? How cool! Missed ya, bud! Hope all is well!

How's it going man. Yeah, been out of the scene a while and have no time much now with University and all. Really only probably going to be popping up on the modern gaming forums though.

Williams Arcade Classics :D

A friend had a copy and was liquidating his PS games, but he was convinced the big box games were more rare/valuable so he wouldn't sell it to me. :(

I have and love Assualt Rigs, but I threw the box out a long time ago. Comeon, a single box that takes up as much space as 8 CD cases (four stacked ontop of another four)

I doubt the box size has much to do with how good a game is, they just did that because cart boxes used to be huge, and wanted something that was as much eye candy as the cart consoles were. All Sega CD and Saturn boxes are big boxes I believe. Coul be wrong though.

I KNOW all SegaCD cases are.

I THINK all the american Saturn games came in the same jumbo boxes as SCD games.

Yes. Saturn games used the same cases as the CD games did. Which I find part of the coolness. It's funny. Too bad DVD style cases weren't around then, they could have saved a lot of space. Or they could have just put all the games in regular Jewel cases from the beginning. But I don't care. I love their shiny look. They COULD have been a bit thinner, though. Taller is fine. But they're too thick. They have almost 4 times the mass of a standard CD jewel case.

I have 4 SCD games. Only one is in the oversized jewel case. Two are in cardboard boxes. (Corpse Killer folds open, Rise of the Dragon is a standard flap top box.) and one was Vay which had no case upon arrival. It's in a clear plastic DVD case right now until I get a replacement. I'll probably use one of the 5 duplicate games I'm receiving in a few days to hold it. Then I'd just need the manual and back paper piece. Viola! Complete Vay!

By the way. Anyone have a picture of what the first generation PS "Big Box" games looked like? I was a Nintendo Fanboy back when the PSX was starting out and didn't pay attention to anything except the SNES and N64. And only faintly knew about the Saturn.

No pic, but think cardboard SCD box, only with Playstation-style art(black ridges where Sega's colored sidebar is).

Wow.. just what I pictured. Including that black rigged part.

I'm always buying big box PSX games (just about the only interesting thing to collect on the system).

The most annoying thing to me about them is not the fact that half of them are jewel cases and half are cardboard (Sony's clear vision showing through) but the fact that all the words on the side run the opposite direction from every CD/DVD/Book/Video Game Box on my shelves.

Morons.

Let me guess. Lie the box on the table face up, look at the spine and the words are upside down?

Correct (assuming you mean the left spine, the same one a book has).

Checked the collection. There are actually three types of "big boxes".

1) Plastic. Has actual ridges up the left side of the front cover. Molded in black. Artwork is attached directly to plastic case and has a matte finish.

2) Carboard. Has picture of ridges up the left side of the front cover. Artwork is printed on the carboard and has a glossy finish. Has plastic CD holder inside back cover.

3) Jewel case. Esentially the same as standard US Saturn and SegaCD case, utilizing a back insert and the instruction to serve as the cover.

I have:

Alien Trilogy (Jewel)

Doom (Cardboard)

Resident Evil (Plastic)

Ridge Racer (Jewel)

Street Fighter Alpha: Warrior's Dreams (Cardboard)

Terry Pratchett's Discworld (Plastic)

I actually have a few more, but they've been relegated to my sell box and I'm not sure what the titles are.

And for the record, my vote goes to Doom.

Wasn't "Warhawk" big box? That game almost persuaded me to get a PSX early on. Later I came back to it on the psone and it was pretty good. The effects w/ the cluster missiles were just plain cool. (And finally, it was Star Fox 64 that persuaded me to get into the then current generation of systems...kind of a similar game in a few respects, but looked even more amazing.)

Funny how clunky those big boxes are. I mean, regular jewel boxes seemed like an improvement...but now, DVD style boxes look a lot sharper than the jewel boxes. (I don't have much urge to go put all my current gen games in golders like I did w/ DC and PSX jewelboxes.)

Warhawk sold me on PSX too. It was BEAUTIFUL, not to mention FUN. Of course, I had to wait until the price dropped to $150 to get one. -_-

it definately was something you couldn't do on a SNES...

I remember being seriously blown away by one of those early fighters...I think it mighta been Soul Blade? Graphics still seem to hold up pretty well.

Mighta been Toshinden. They had it, Ridge Racer, and WipEout on demo everwhere. Man, I spent so much time at Blockbuster, I eventually unlocked both the Angel AND Devil cars.
