GrizzLee #76 Posted September 20, 2006 Maybe I am wrong on this, but didn't the original gameboy come with Tetris. All I know is that I had that game and played it endlessly. The worst would be Combat with the 2600 and they didn't get much better when they put both Combat and Pac-man as pack-ins You folks must be pretty young. Combat was an awesome pack-in game for its day. It was one of the reasons to get an Atari 2600. Given there were only a handful of games at the time, Combat was the best of all of them IMHO and a logical choice. Black Jack on the intelly wasn't a bad choice either for the time. 5200 Super Breakout was a bad choice though. My favs would have to be Combat - 2600 Donkey Kong - Colecovsion Mario - NES Tetris - Gameboy -Lee
Video #77 Posted September 21, 2006 Well, I'd have to say the best pack in IMO, would be, Well..... Combat for the Atari 2600 (Even today, an awesome multiplayer game that you and a friend can play for hours). Super Mario Bros for the NES One of the best games of all time. Tetris for the GameBoy THE most playable game of all time.. And for Worst pack ins, all you have to look at is any modern system, and their out and out lack of a pack in (it doesn't get much worse than that) You'd think for the price you pay to get a new system, you could at least get a demo disc with a few games or something. For real now, worst pack ins... Breakout for the 5200 It was enjoyable, but dated, and showed off almost nothing of the 5200's capabilitys. Pac-Man for the 5200 It had been done to death, even at this point. And besides, a game made for all systems isn't exactly a showcase piece.
Vic George 2K3 #78 Posted September 21, 2006 I didn't see Pac-Man being "done to death" on the 5200 when it first came out. More like Pac-Man wasn't done close to perfect, and that version was like the first sign of doing it close to perfect.
Lauren Tyler #79 Posted September 22, 2006 Can't believe this topic was revived. At any rate, here's my updated view of best and worst pack-ins: BEST: NES - Super Mario Brothers I only knew the NES coming with Gyromite and Duck Hunt, since that's the package my dad got for his place. But what a great idea packing the NES with Super Mario Bros. was for Nintendo. Since that was the game that really attracted people to the NES, having it packaged with the system would make people more eager to buy it. RUNNERS UP: Atari 7800 - Pole Position 2 Game Boy - Tetris WORST: Atari 5200 - Super Breakout The best way to show off a new system is by showing its power, and Super Breakout does not show that power one bit. They definitely should've used Pac-Man instead. RUNNERS UP: Game.Com - Lights Out Virtual Boy: Mario's Power Tennis
BrianC #80 Posted September 22, 2006 (edited) WORST: Atari 5200 - Super Breakout The best way to show off a new system is by showing its power, and Super Breakout does not show that power one bit. They definitely should've used Pac-Man instead. RUNNERS UP: Game.Com - Lights Out Virtual Boy: Mario's Power Tennis Lights Out and Mario Tennis for VB are the runners up for the worst? Lights Out is one of the few good games on the Game.com. Mario's Power Tennis is a fun game and one of the better Virtual Boy games. Lights Out is not the only Pack In for the Game.com. Some of them were packed in with Quiz Wiz, a far worse pack in. I remember that the SNES was packed in with Super Mario All Stars/World for a while. That is one awesome pack in. Super Mario 1, 2, 2J, 3, and World all in the same cart! Didn't the Genesis also have the 6 in 1 cart with Revenge of Shinobi, Super Hang-On, Sonic 1, Columns, Golden Axe, and Streets of Rage as a pack in? That cart rocks! Video #81 Posted September 22, 2006 Not done to death? Name one system by the time 5200 came out that didn't have either a knockoff of pac-man, or Pac-man itself As for Runners up....Lights out? How the hell is that one of the worst? It's one of the best games for that system, and I still play it, And you forgot Solitair, since that was also in the system itself too (of course, that was the only good handheld version of that at the time ) And Mario Tennis was one of the reasons to get a virtual boy. It's also one of the few games that actually showcase the VB's 3D capabilitys, rather than the mild useage as in most other games on there.

+opcode #83 Posted September 24, 2006 BEST: Donkey Kong - ColecoVision Super Mario World - SNES Pole Position II - Atari 7800 (considering it was intended to be released in 1984) WORST: Super Breakout - Atari 5200 Eduardo
Rik #84 Posted September 26, 2006 I think the best two-player game of all time is the cooperative variation in Space Invaders where one person moves right and the other person moves left. I agree!!
Atariboy2600 #85 Posted September 26, 2006 WORST: Super Breakout - Atari 5200 Eduardo WORST PACK-IN: Super Breakout (Atari 5200) WORST Super Breakout - 5200 (c'mon they coulda done better than that B.S.) 5200: Super Breakout- yep, definitely the worst. It's a brand-new system with cutting-edge 1982 graphics, and you choose to give away a game that even the lowly 2600 could do in 1979?!?!? That's not a good way to showcase the new system. Worst: Easily Super Breakout 5200. It would have been worth it to Atari to have made the pack in Pac-Man. Even if it meant delaying the release of the 5200. They could also have made Pac a 5200 exclusive for a year before going for the easy money in the 2600 market. The Worst Packins: 1. Atari 5200: Super Breakout. I don't know what they were thinking. Maybe they were trying to fail. Worst Packin: Super Brakeout - Atari 5200. Worst pack-ins: Atari 5200 with Super Breakout and the Atari 7800 with Pole Position II especially in the light of having the NES with SMB For real now, worst pack ins... Breakout for the 5200 It was enjoyable, but dated, and showed off almost nothing of the 5200's capabilitys. WORST: Atari 5200 - Super Breakout The best way to show off a new system is by showing its power, and Super Breakout does not show that power one bit. They definitely should've used Pac-Man instead. Video #86 Posted September 26, 2006 Dont have a friend in the world.. Even me. I'm not saying I dislike the game, it's one of my favorites on there (though with paddles, the 2600 version's still better) It's just a lousy pack in for the 5200. Worst Halo-Xbox What the (censor, language, anger, rage)?!?!?! How the hell can one of the best games on a system (to MOST people) be considered one of it's worst? Now if your bashing it cause it was never a pack in, that's different, it should have been.

ls650 #88 Posted September 27, 2006 Best: Combat/2600 or Minestorm/Vectrex.
supercat #89 Posted September 27, 2006 Best: Combat/2600 Combat is a good game, especially for its time, but it is useless without two players of comparable ability. While it's true that in 1977 the idea of single-player video games hadn't really caught on, having a pack-in that required two people may have limitted sales of the 2600 to families with two people who wanted to play together. Air-sea battle wasn't as good a game, but it may have made more sense as a pack-in (perhaps that's why Sears included it).

Cool, that would rule, but not that I'll ever have an 800, or it;s version of Breakout
jpfalcon2003 #91 Posted September 27, 2006 Worst is 5200 breakout. That was definitely a horrible pack in game to promote a system. The 7800 version of Pole Position II is a great game, but a little too old at the time the system was released to be a pack in game for it. They should have picked another pack in. I think the 2600 did fine releasing Combat and Pac-man together. Pac-Man does suck, but was very popular at the time to have it as a pack in title. Best pack in- Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt/Track Meet

BrianC #93 Posted September 28, 2006 My wife and daughter have compelled me to add the following votes for best pack-in: Wife - Mario Kart DS Daughter - Nintendogs Both have been/are genuine pack-in games with the "heavy" DS in Oz. They were pack in games here in the US too. I have the red DS that had Mario Kart packed in with it along with those cool decals. Mario Kart DS is a sweet pack in.
