Goggle5 #1 Posted November 11, 2003 Just wondering if anyone has one of these ... I was given a nice original Japanese Famicom (NES) system with a couple of games. The problem is that I can't get this to work with my TV here in the states ... the unit looks like it powers on, but no video/audio comes out - I had heard that there was some type of 'fix' or modification that was needed in order to get the Japanese video signal to register with an American spec. TV????? Is anyone familiar with this???

TV????? Is anyone familiar with this??? Can't find the mod. But I did see a page saying that the TV channels are diffrent on a Japanese TV than a US one, so even if you CAN get a channel that picks the FamiCom up, you'll get audio or video only, and the rest will be on a diffrent channel. ... Though a FamiCom 2(the japanese top-loader) WILL work. Likely due to the AV ports(the reason for it's release was that most TVs in Japan apparently don't have antenna jacks anymore so they needed a FamiCom with AV out, whereas us Americans gor the shaft with an RF-only unit). Goggle5 #4 Posted November 12, 2003 JB thanks for your input !! That's kind of what I had heard regarding the Japanese TV channels vs. American ones. hmmm ... I'll try and play around some more and see what I come up with. Ferris, I'll see what I can do with this system, but I'll most likely be contacting you in regards to some kind of trade. bjk7382 #5 Posted November 12, 2003 Japan is ntsc also, I don't see why it wouldn't work. I just seen an N64 from japan and it had the expansion DD cd drive on the bottom of it and he said it would work in the states with out a mod.

They may use the NTSC standard, but the TV channels are on diffrent frequencies(NTSC specifies HOW the signal's broadcast, but not WHERE it's broadcast). An N64 will work because it has AV out. No TV tuner involved. The original FamiCom doesn't have AV out. It's RF only. One of the major improvements to the NES was the addition of AV ports(the other being socketed controllers). DeV0 #7 Posted November 13, 2003 You should be able to get the picture on one frequency and the sound on another. If you get nothing it may be busted. Jap NTSC is slightly different, 3.58 or sumpin? Definately the AV mod.
