Not sure when the first 2600 came out that was actually called the 2600 and not the video Computer System.

Mr.FoodMonster #4 Posted November 14, 2003 anyone know the DAY? that would be cool, if it came out exactly 11 years before my birth =P (that would be the 25th)
Mindfield #5 Posted November 14, 2003 The VCS was officially named "2600" with the release of the "vader" model, the first to bear the 2600 moniker, in 1982. Now that I think about it, it's the only model to be named simply "2600." The model before was still the VCS, and the model after was the 2600 Jr.
Video #6 Posted November 14, 2003 2600 come out in 77, right befor christmas. We got one christmas day, that was so fun, I was four. As for Ms Pac-Man, it come out in 82 for the 2600. It single handedly made Pac-Man the 'worst game ever'. Just because people started putting graphics in games and trying to make arcade like ports. Joe Stella #7 Posted November 14, 2003 at the time (77+), we called the 2600 "the atari". simple as that. everyone and anyone knew what you meant.
Rob Mitchell #8 Posted November 14, 2003 at the time (77+), we called the 2600 "the atari". simple as that. everyone and anyone knew what you meant. Yup! We did the same even though we bought the Sears Video Arcade (Atari VCS 2600) flavor. That was in Oct 1977 and well before Christmas '77. So did the boxes from the earliest years have '2600' as the model number? The bottom of my one channel 6 switch unit does say 'CX-2600'.
