upgrading from TOS 1.2 on 2 chips to Rainbow on 6 chips

I have rainbow TOS roms on six chips, and my 1040STf has six sockets, but it's got 1.2 on two chips currently. i tried just swapping them out, but they won't work; I've been told that when switching from 2 to 6 chip setups some jumpers or something need to be added or removed etc. I need help finding info on this. I know about the French upgrade instructions but they are in french, and not exactly what I need as they refer to a modification due to different size chips, the chips I'm using fit in the current sockets. Any help appreciated.
