My New Atari "Room of Doom"

Recommended Posts

First, I must tell you that this will probably be the most UNLIKELY place for an Atari Game Lounge. It's not actually a room- it's a storage closet in my basement 8) . So here's the story: My mom was cleaning out this storage room in my basement and I say "Hey! that would be a perfect place to play atari in peace!" It had a perfect place to put everything, even a perfect place to sit. So I pulled in some extension cords, an old TV that I found also in that closet, and of course the good old heavy sixer. Below are some pictures showing the room, and me playing in the room. (notice that the pictures aren't very good because I took them with an I-Zone Polaroid camera and then scanned them) Also, should I submit this to the DP Room of Doom? It's not very big but I know that they post the oddest gaming rooms that they can find and, I think this one is pretty odd. I'll post the first picture and then the next 3 will come in a few minutes. Thanks to all who look!

I doubt that you could even fit into that space, PitBull! ;)

As long as you have space and a place and an Atari to play, what else matters? :D

MMF's setup/game room is a complete opposite of a "Room of Doom". His whole finished basement is basically one big game room! Instead of Room of Doom, I'd have to call it a "Pleasure Zone". He has several systems set up for instant play, hundreds of games sorted and organized at your finger tips, a big-ass Sony flatscreen TV, multiple Wavebird controllers for GC goodness, a fridge stocked with beer and goodies, and I could just go on and on. 8) Quite a contrast to a packed closet with a tilted TV.

This reminds me of what I'm working on.

Some of you may remember my "experiment" -- if you don't, here it is: http://www.atariage.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=33478 -- from a couple of months back, wherein I crammed my computer, all of my music gear, AND a TV running an Atari 7800 and an NES, plus a couple bins of cartridges, into a 5 ft by 5 ft nook in my basement.

This experiment was done on the off chance that I'd have to resort to using a space that small for my stuff when we move.

Well the move is ON. We've got an apartment in Minneapolis, and what's really weird about it is that it actually has a 5 ft by 6 ft storage room... in a rather odd place: you have to go THROUGH the master bathroom to get to it. (I'm attaching the floor plan to this post.)

I am looking forward to making this work... even though it's not going to be the real game room setup. I've actually convinced my wife to let me put the Asteroids cocktail table in the living room (!) and I'll also have the supreme console setup on the living room TV with a multi-input switchbox: the 7800, the 5200, the Intellivision, and the NES. I'll keep the little TV and one of my 2600s in the storage closet/game room, along with most of my cart collection.

Isn't it ood we Atarians prefer the hidden, troll-like nooks and crannies to crawl into and hole up with our games? I recently commented that a storm/fallout shelter in the backyard would be the way to go. If anyone out there (in tornado land) has made that happen, I'd be amused!

Well, after a year in the aforementioned apartment, we'll probably be buying a house in Minneapolis... so then it may well happen!

(At least I'll have something fun to do while I'm down there half of the summer hiding from tornadoes... :D )

My game room is a 1956 built-in BOMB SHELTER! :D I literally have to zig zag throuh a short maze of cinderblock walls to get into it. And all the shelves that once held canned goods for survival are now filled with systems, controllers and carts.

Bad news, it seems as if my mom might make me move out of my now called "Little Crammed Atari Place" (what an original name aint it?) Becuase she claims she has more stuff to cram in there. Man :( I love that closet so much. The cool thing is is that it's so far deep back into the basement, you can't hear anything when your in there. I was late for a funeral yesterday because my family didnt know where I was and I couldn't hear their calls because I was playing a heated game of Space Invaders :ponder: . I will bring you more news, and I will try and batton down the fort as long as I can. Wish me luck.... :P
