StarCon (with base) (pictures)

Recommended Posts

Hello all --

Here we have quite the setup for a 5200 fan. I ended up buying two Starcons when they were for sale (the second one was a used deal because the owner (F. Rubatino) used it as the testing console). However, I finally got around to putting the bottom on one of the joysticks and I think it looks great. It is a solid wood bottom, sprayed black with four 1 1/4" wood screws and then the bottom grippers. The bottom fits so well it almost doesn't need screws and I am not going to drill through the sides because I don't think it needs them. Thanks to my Dad for helping me (he cut the bottom, sanded it and painted it) - a true father/son project :). Here are some photos! I'll finish the other one before too long. Tell me what you think.

Take care,

RangerG

P.S. It is very heavy/sturdy - it weighs about the same as the 5200 system itself.

P.S.S. Please post pics if anyone else put the base on and we can see other ideas.

Looks very sharp. Nice job.

I need to get off my butt and finish mine. I am in the midst of setting up my game room, so everything is a mess, Once done, this is near the top of my priorities.

Thanks for the comments.

I know what you mean about not wanting to mess it up. The whole process isn't that easy a task. The base instruction sheet talks about drilling holes through the side of the controller and there is no way I want to do that for fear of messing it up. Like I said, the joystick I put the base on is more used than the other one and actually has a few dings (you can't see them in the picture) so I started with that one.

Looks GREAT Randy! Nice Job!

A few weeks ago, I hot glued the support blocks he sent into the unit and cut a piece of 1/2 inch plywood for the base, then screwed it into the blocks. I'm not drilling into the sides either. If I had more time or better tools, I'd finish it off a little better than I did, but you hardly see the base anyway. I didn't even have time to spray paint it, but that's OK! :D

I made mine out of 1/4 inch black acrylic. It looks pretty good except it doesn't fit exactly snug around the corners.

You did a great job on that base. I haven't gotten around to fastening my base because I've been too busy with home improvement projects. I've decided on a clear plexiglass base with rubber boots. I may also add a reproduction Atari parts sticker to the bottom for good measure.

I like the idea of a clear base to show off the simplicity of what is an amazing 5200 controller.

I was wondering if anyone wired theirs for use on a 2600? I know that there was a way to do thi, but Fred was uncertain because he no longer had the 2600 schematics.

I was also wondering if anyone could point me towards a good picture of the boxes these were originally going to be sold in. I'm thinking of making a reproduction box for this when the holidays are over and am looking for ideas.
