Playstation 2 consoles always broken??

Recommended Posts

I did checked at ebay and I do realized that there alots of PS2 consoles often show up "broken"

PS2 consoles "broken" listing

I always wondering and stop and think, if im planning to buy used PS2 console, then could be broken later, but I think better to buy brand new with under warranties. Or can buy who people rarely played and use with PS2 console.

Without starting a PS2 vs. GameCube vs XBox war, I'd just point you to the list of games available for each - PS2 has about 10x what there is on other consoles (and the XBox games are almost all the same anyway).

I own all three, BTW (naturally) - Gamecube is the nicest to program for (it's lovely!), but PS2 is the best console if you're a gameplayer, by far... no point having more powerful hardware like the XBox if the games are all the same (and not too good, usually). I wish the GC had more success.... it's such a nice little machine.

FWIW, I suspect the amount of 'broken' PS2 and XBox is due to people trying unsuccessfully to chip their consoles. Just a suspicion, mind... certainly my PS2 is still going strong (as are... well, all my other consoles, come to think of it). Look after them and they'll be fine.

No, the ps2 is just a piece of junk hardware wise. I am on my third one. I dont think sony put any quality in the workmanship of this item (maybe on purpose to have people buy new ones every so often).

Fair enough - maybe I got lucky (I got one of the earlier ones) though I suspect you'll find exactly the same experiences with GC and XB owners. They're all cutting so many corners to cut their losses I doubt there's any really good quality hardware in any of them.

Completely unlike our Atari heavy sixers, in other words!

That's my suspicion. You can screw up your PS2 very easily with mod chips. I haven't had any trouble with my PS2, and I even got it used (from a friend). The only consoles I've ever had die on me were a Sega Saturn (laser died) and a 2600 (controller port went bad).

I have a launch PS2, it still works fine. The DVD portion of it never worked fully, some movies Galdiator for one, would lock up or start skipping. X-Men I believe did this too. But that was becuase it was rushed I thought and later models fixed these issues. But I had a DVD player anyway so it was just for games really, and to be able to play original PSX games is a very nice bonus. That sold me, as I never owned a PSX, y brother did, but he moved out and took it with him, so I bought teh PS2 to replace it.

Also, I always thinking, some people saying that better to get the orginal PS2 (first gereation), but the earliest verision PS2 console didnt read CD-R or DVD-R, is that correct? Right now newer version PS2 consoles now can read CD-R and DVD-R?? Is that true?

I don't get some of those prices. It costs about $60.00 for a replacement laser " I have not check recently" or they can get lucky and it just needed a small adjustment. I also found a place you can purchase that stupid ribbin cable from. But, I to face the problem. I ran into 2 play station 2's with disc read errors at a pawn shop. By the time I add a controller and try to fix them. I would be into it 30.00 for each unit, plus say 20.00 for a controller and if the laser is dead. Boom $60.00 for that. Now I'm so close to a new console. I could just go out and purchase one.

I have never seen the fragility of this thing. I have had one for about 2 years or so. Played maybe 50-75 different games for hours and hours (including ps1 titles) and it was the primary DVD player for over a year... (Did have to replace a joypad, but that was a spilt milk, literally, incident)

Maybe people just only want to sell broken ones? So it seems the used ones are all broken? :P

Seriously tho, I think I have been lucky... Can think of 2 people off the top of my head that have each replaced them (with LESS use than mine, in LESS time)... Electronics are funny that way.

I have one of the original Playstation 2 systems. Mine still works, but I never really liked it that much. I probably have played it a total of 4-5 hours since I bought it and have used it maybe once in the last year. A lot of people have had several PS2's break on them.

My favorite new system is the Xbox. I have played that for hours and hours and have had no problems at all.

Meh, it's always the older PS2s that always breakdown. Luckily, I got mine new October '02 so I don't have to worry about my PS2 going dead on me. :D

I took my gamecube back to Meijers a YEAR AND A HALF after I bought it and they excahnaged it no problem

IT DOESN'T COST ANYTHING TO GET A NEW ONE.

I've had my PS2 since launch and only had a problem with it reading ps1 and blue ps2 disks about a month ago. I called Sony and told them the problem. They fixed it for free and I had it back in under a week. I really can't complain about their product or service.
